I Spot ACCESS is an Iowa company that is currently working with the state of Iowa to set up free wireless hotspots at all of the states highway rest areas. An article in today's Des Moines Register points to increased tourism and spending in local communities as a benefit of the new service.

The wireless hot spots are now available at rest stops near Mitchellville and Davenport on Interstate Highway 80, and near Osceola on Interstate Highway 35, Iowa Department of Transportation officials said. A similar service will begin soon at rest areas near Adair on I-80. After a six-month trial, access may expand to 40 rest areas statewide, officials said.

I Spot ACCESS isn't charging the state or users for the service. Their business model is built on advertising for local businesses and directing traffic to a page of ads and local information when users access the network. Considering the large amount of traffic that uses I-80 I can see this succeeding. Having lived most of my life there, I don't need much of an excuse to visit Iowa, but now I have another reason to stop a few times on my way home.

Beyond rest areas, I think free wifi hotspots belong in every mall food court. Provide an inexpensive reason for people to walk in the mall and chances are they will probably drop a few bucks. If nothing else, it gives dad something to do while mom and the kids shop.

Web Development Bookmarklets: Thanks for Si mon Willison for pointing us at this amazing page of bookmarklets that let you play with the CSS and JavaScript of any page.

These bookmarklets let you see how a web page is coded without digging through the source, debug problems in web pages quickly, and experiment with CSS or JS without editing the actual page.

Some killer bookmarklets:

  • Computed styles. As near as I can tell, this one lets you click on an element and displays the styles applied to it both directly and inherited from higher up the cascade.

  • Generate source. Displays the entire DOM tree as formatted text.

  • View variables. Displays all JavaScript variables and functions in scope on the page.

  • Shell. Gives you a JavaScript shell in the current page scope.

Great, great tools here. Incidentally, these are only the "Web Development" bookmarklets. There are hundreds of bookmarklets on the site. Some of them are jaw-droppingly good, and worthy of their own post.

If you don't know how a bookmarklet works, just pick one you like, then drag it to the bookmark bar on your browser. Find a page where you want to use it, and click the bookmark.

Better than karaoke.

« A contestant at the Finnish air guitar finals in Helsinki before competing in the Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu. [do watch the video as one of the winners is a pretty hot looking woman. :)] »

It has often been said that guitars and cars are phallic extensions and, at least with guitars, you can almost picture it as such but air guitar is like clothed public masturbation. :) It's more enjoyable than karaoke for the spectator, at least a sober one, and in the age of MTV who didn't want to play like Eddie Van Halen at one point or another? There was a bit of a judging scandal, too. What in the hell is it with sport scandals this year? If it's not doping or drugs it's a judging fiasco. It takes all the focus off the sport and puts it on the business side. At least no one jumped up on stage and tried to warn the contestants about the impending end of the world.

And, perl people should join me in a moment of silence for the valiant sparc formerly known as chaos.wustl.edu since it gave its last gasp on Friday and will be given to the boneyard for parts. Chaos had been in service for almost ten years and it took 3 years of hard beating when it served as the search.cpan.org host before it was rescued by an E450. I spent a lot of late nights and early morning keeping chaos running when it was getting pummeled and, I think, we bonded. I'm not a very sentimental person but I'm going to miss that poor old box. A special thanks to Alan Reuter and the whole CTS department at Washington University in St. Louis for hosting it for all these years. Chaos also hosted the cpan.org DNS which Ben Hockenhull has fixed for now until I work up the enthusiasm to work with NyetworkSolutions and move things around. So long chaos, I'll miss you. *sniff*

Thank heaven for good drugs

Thank heaven for good drugs 09/04/2004 06:36 AM

Bill Clinton called into the special Larry King roundup on his bypass surgery. He sounded great. Of course I projected my own experience onto his. I sounded great too, at that point in the process. They're pumping relaxing drugs into your system. I don't think you could feel anxious, no matter what. Good drugs.

It didn't really come home what was going to happen until the guy came in to shave my chest the morning of the surgery. He didn't stop there. Basically every single square inch of my body was shaved, except for the top of my head. I tried to make light conversation, but my mind was on what was about to happen.

Before they carted me away I had to go into the lavatory and wash everything I could reach. That's when I fell apart. Sobbing, crying, wanting to get out of there. I looked at my chest and realized this was the last time I was going to see it. I had a pretty good idea of what they do in bypass surgery, and I had a visual image there and then of my vital organs coming out through a big hole there. I collapsed, got up and put myself in the rolling bed they had brought in, and let them roll me into the surgery part of the heart clinic.

Somewhere along the line they must have hooked up something intravenously, because while I was waiting in the corridor for someone to come get me, I got really high. Cracking jokes, and sort of observing all the preparations for the surgery. I'm not sure if I was actually in the operating room, but let me tell you, I sure didn't mind. Next thing I knew I was crawling my way through some weird weird ideas into a strange reality, the recovery room. There was an attendent there, reading a magazine, giving me ice cubes to suck on (I was really thirsty) and giving me more opiates to keep me from freaking out. When morning came (24 hours since the beginning of the surgery) they brought me breakfast, and made me get out of bed to eat it. I did.

They don't let you lie in bed for any long period after the surgery, if they did you'd get even sicker, gotta get moving asap. The amazing thing is that your body can do it. I remember the first walks I took around the cardiac ward were the most gratifying of my life. But I wasn't out of the emotional hole yet. Maybe I'll write more about that after Bill Clinton has his surgery.

Yesterday he cracked a great joke, "Like the Republicans, I want four more years." Here's lookin at you kid. Murphy-willing, knock wood, I am not a doctor (or a Republican), it should be a lot more than four more years.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

I was two weeks shy of my thirteenth birthday, and in Oregon filming Stand By Me, when Live Aid happened in 1985, and I was a little too young (and focused on making the movie) to fully appreciate it. When I was old enough to understand what I'd missed, I never thought I'd get a chance to experience the show.

Never that is, until the good kids at Rhino released Live Aid on DVD, which Anne gave me for Christmas. For the past two days, I've turned off Fred and let the DVD run while I work on various writing projects. I'd heard a little bit of it over the Thanksgiving weekend, when XM played it on the 80s channel, so I expected to enjoy it, but I'm a little surprised at just how much it rocks. The performances really hold up, and one of them even made an impression on Ryan and Nolan.

After listening to Paul Young perform one of my all-time favorite songs, (Come Back And Stay), I moved to the couch to watch U2 perform. In order to fully recreate the concert experience, I cranked up the Onkyo to a million, and bounced a beach ball around my living room.

Ryan walked into the room, and sat down on the couch next to me. He and Nolan have grown up with U2 the way I grew up with The Beatles, so he recognized the song right away.

"Is that U2?" He said.

I told him that it was, and while Bono continued to sing, I gave him a brief history of Live Aid.

". . . so Bob Geldof decided to —"

"Wait. I'm sorry to interrupt, but what's up with Bono's boots?" He pointed to the screen, and for the first time I noticed that Bono was wearing leather pants, tucked into knee-high suede boots. They had an impressive heel.

"Uhh . . ." I began.

"And is that . . . oh my god. It is." The color drained from his face. "He has a mullet."

Before I could reply, Nolan walked into the room.

"Hey!" He said. "What are you watching?"

"It's Live Aid," I said. "They were raising money for —"

"Woah! That is a sweet mullet!" Nolan pointed at the screen and erupted into peals of laughter.

I paused the DVD, and turned to face them.

"Listen, you guys. It was 1985."

They looked back at me, blankly.

"Oh, nice." It's yet another 'I've-just-become-my-parents' moment, just replace 'it was the sixties' with 'it was the eighties.'"

"The mullet was the official haircut of rock and roll," I said.

Before either of them could point out how ludicrous this statement was, even if it was true, I tried to explain: "This concert was a really important event! Not only are these all incredible bands at the height of their popularity, but you can see what happened when a bunch of people came together to make a difference in the . . . in the world . . " I realized that they weren't listening to me. Ryan's face was turning red and Nolan was choking back massive giggles.

"What?" I said.

Ryan's face cracked, and he howled with laughter as he pointed at the TV. I looked up, and saw that I'd paused the movie on a shot of Bono, his head thrown back, eyes clamped shut, microphone held high . . . and mullet in full-effect.

"I'm sorry, Wil." Ryan said. "What were you saying?"

I laughed in spite of myself. Bono did look pretty ridiculous. "I'll tell you another time. For now, just try to enjoy the music."

"Oh, we can do that," Nolan said, and made a big production of putting his hands over his eyes.

"Hey, let's see how well your rock and roll heroes hold up in twenty years," I said.

"As long as they don't have mullets, I think we'll be fine," Ryan said.

I pressed play and we watched — well, I watched and they listened, to the rest of Sunday Bloody Sunday, followed by Bad.

"See?" I said. "That was during Unforgettable Fire, just before Joshua Tree. Those two songs they just played are the reason you have heard U2 since you were too little to know what music was."

As the final strains of Bad echoed over an ariel shot of Wembley Stadium, they cut to footage of Phil Collins about to board the Concorde.

"Who's that?" Nolan asked.

"That's Phil Collins. He just finished performing in London, and now he's going to fly to Philly to perform there too," I said. "It was pretty cool."

"Phil Collins?!" Ryan said, "The wussy Tarzan guy?!"

I shrugged my shoulders. "Well . . . yeah."

"He was cool?"

"Phil Collins was . . . " I cleared my throat. "He was an international superstar."

Ryan looked at me, genuinely confused. "Why?"

I took a deep breath and gave the only answer I could.

"It . . . it was 1985." I said, suddenly not that uncomfortable to take another step toward becoming my parents, and silently grateful that the kids hadn't been in the room when I was rocking out to Adam Ant.

asus_v6800v.jpgAsus is showing off their latest laptop with the V6800V, which they claim is the world's thinnest and lightest 15-inch laptop. The V6800V stands at a pixie-like 0.9 inches thick and weighs just 4.4 pounds. Based on the Sonoma edition of the Intel Centrino chipset, the V6800V starts at 1.73 GHz with a 60GB hard drive. On the higher end, Asus offers 2 GHz and 100GB as well as the option for an 8-cell battery which they claim can hit eight hours, although I'm assuming that's time spent at the command prompt until I see otherwise. Available now in the UK for $2,300 (which includes VAT). No word on US availability or price, yet.

Carbon Fiber Asus V6V

Carbon Fiber Asus V6V 06/17/2005 06:11 PM

4121_large.jpgThere's a rule in the tech industry—making something out of carbon fiber makes it cooler. I don't care if it's a toilet plunger or a car hood, carbon fiber just sounds more interesting than "shiny plastic." Therefore, we aren't surprised to see that Asus is giving it a go in the carbon fiber notebook niche.

A few other folks have gone this route, but Asus seems to have hit a sweet spot. The V6V isn't too ostentatious. It's got a nice Pentium M-based chipset, and it's acceptably light—a 15" screen at 5.5 pounds—to warrant the carbon fiber.
