01/08/2004 07:15 PMAfter reading about how awesome "America's Army" is on a linux system
(I have RedHat 9), I decided to download all 670 MB of it. MY QUESTION
IS THIS: the file is a .RUN file, so how do I install it? Do I just
double-click it or what? I never came across a .RUN file before.

06/04/2004 10:56 AMAmerica's Army: Special
Forces is a free team-based tactical first person shooter
published by the US Army and distributed for free over the Internet.
The game is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. The new 2.1 version,
codenamed "Downrange," is available for download. It incorporates many
new features, including a new "Karma Physics Engine" that provides
more realistic physics and character animations. Also added in this
release is the M136 AT4 anti-tank weapon, a new armored vehicle called
the Stryker, a new "Tournament Mode," a new "Demo/Kiosk Mode," two new
maps, and many other changes. The full version measures 743MB, but if
you have the 2.0a version, a 109MB update patch is available for
download instead -- a list of download mirrors is available from the
America's Army Web site. System requirements call for a G4/700MHz or
faster, 256MB RAM, 1GB of hard drive space, and an ATI Radeon 7500 or
Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better graphics system.

America's Army v2.3 for Macintosh was delayed as the programmer found
a suitable replacement for GameSpy, the game matching technology found
in earlier versions.

06/22/2004 02:04 PMA few weeks ago, I wrote:
Dude! This is too cool!
Tomorrow, I have an audition to do voicework for Twisted Metal:
World Tour!
I've played so much Twisted Metal over the years that if I hear Rob
Zombie in the car, I have to change the station, or I may get a little
. . . aggressive.
This would be like a Trekkie getting to work on TNG, or me getting to
work on Family Guy or Futurama.
Apparently, a
Video
game news site ran a story which quoted the entry, but incorrectly
asserted that I had been "cast" in the game. I sent them feedback and
asked for a correction, but they never ran it, nor did they respond to
my request.
And now, of course, Sony is pissed.
At me.
Because they think I claimed that I was cast in the project (except
that I didn't.)
They've asked me to issue a retraction, which I don't think is
appropriate, since I never made the incorrect claim in the first
place, but I love Sony's games, and I especially love the entire
Twisted Metal series, and since I don't want to hurt them, and I
especially don't want to hurt my chances of ever working with them
(provided it's not already too late) I would like to issue the
following clarification:
I completely respect Sony, and everyone involved with
the production of all the Twisted Metal games. I wrote about my
audition on my blog because I was so excited about the opportunity to
audition for something that I love so much.
I understand the importance of not revealing any confidential or
sensitive information, which is why I didn't talk about the characters
I read for, or discuss any storyline specifics. I've been a
professional actor for over 25 years, and confidentiality is nothing
new to me.
I deeply regret that I was misquoted by psp.ign.com, and I am very
upset that they did not respond to my request to clarify their story.
I hope this hasn't caused any harm to Sony, or anyone involved with
the production of Twisted Metal: World Tour, and I sincerely hope that
I will get an opportunity to work with them in the future.
If nothing else, I can't wait to get my hands on the wheel, and jump
back into Calypso's newest tournament, when the game is
released.

Article:
The march of the machines will be celebrated in Las Vegas next
month with the world's first money tournament for robots — and the
$100,000 prize is drawing a handful of coders out of anonymity.
The emerging technology does more than raise the stakes for real
people and online casinos. It also raises fundamental questions about
how far computers have come in mimicking and improving on human
behavior, and about how far they can go in the future.
The article goes on to quote some AI folks stating that getting a
computer to master poker will probably drive AI forward far more than
a computer winning chess or backgammon, since it's such a
psychological game, and involves understanding human patterns.
Sadly, this poker tournament will not include my favorite parts of
a local Texas Hold'em tournament. Namely, eating too many chips and
laughing so hard that I nearly fall out of my chair.

No aid for America's bad image
12/30/2004 04:51 PMBy lying low in the wake of the Asian tsunami, and then surfacing to
pledge the relatively small amount of $35 million in relief aid, has
President Bush squandered an opportunity to mend America's image
abroad? It's a provocative question posed by David Sanger in the
New York Times Thursday, in which he
quotes Morton Abramowitz, who served as American ambassador to
Thailand a quarter century ago and went on to become one of the
founders of the International Crisis Group, which helps prepare
governments to respond to unexpected shocks. "It's a tragedy but it is
also an opportunity to demonstrate that terrorism doesn't drive out
everything else," Abramowitz said. "It's a chance for him to show what
kind of country we are."
