Yet Another Portable Video Player:

Yet Another Portable Video Player:
Talitor PV-330
07/06/2004 03:09 PM

patcheye_player.jpg imageIt won't win any prizes for being ugly -- oh wait, yes it will; congratulations! -- but here's another portable video player, this time from the UK: the Talitor PV-330. It's got the usual stuff, 40GB hard drive and a 3.5-inch LCD with a fairly low quality screen (looks like 480 x 234, although it can't even decode at that resolution). In fact, after factoring in the £325 purchase price I can't think of much to recommend this thing at all, unless you've resigned yourself to stepping into the portable video future in the most wretched way possible. (Thanks, Joe!)

nhc_playa.gif imageNHC released their "PMP-2000" portable silicon audio player today, and it just so happens the thing can play "DYN" video files. You'll need to run the included conversion software to go from AVI or whatever to DYN, but seeing as how the 1.3" screen has a 120 x 160 dot resolution, it's in your best interests. Other non-ordinary features include OGG playback, the USB Host function (for connecting to digital cameras or whatever), and an included dictionary that takes advantage of the player's video capabilities. Now available in 512MB and 1GB versions for far too many yen.

NHJapan MPM-20X Video Player Reviewed

NHJapan MPM-20X Video Player Reviewed 07/19/2004 01:05 PM

mpm_soroban.jpg image

SorobanGeeks' Portable Media World has a killer review of the MPM-20X from NHJapan, a (duh) portable media player with a built-in 30GB hard drive. One of the best things about the MPM-20X is the fact that it can record via direct from a video source, instead of being reliant on a computer to get its video files (although you can do that, too, of course). The complete package looks very nice, with a full-featured dock and a lot of smart design choices (like a kick stand!), as well as the freedom that comes from not being tied into Microsoft's Portable Media Center system.

So why does PMW recommend to pass on the MPM-20X? The heart of the device, the LCD screen, is pants. Ugly, grainy, washed-out pants.

mPack 800 Portable Video Player

mPack 800 Portable Video Player 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

mpack800.jpg imageAnother day, another portable media player. This mPack P800 is of hearty, Taiwanese stock, with a heavy-lifting video compressor that will save video at resolutions even higher than its native 320 by 240 pixel screen. That's handy for playing back the videos on a better quality screen, after either copying them off the device or playing them via its video out. It supports a variety of formats (including OGG Vorbis and Xvid) and comes in 40GB or 80GB models. If the screen isn't a total travesty, it'll be a contender—if it makes it stateside.

What's wrong with this picture? i-O Display Systems is coming out with a portable video player in January that just happens to be missing a screen to watch all the movies and shows stored on its 20GB hard drive. The idea behind the Riviera, as the company calls it, is that you'll hook it up to a TV or a computer when you want to watch something, but for $600, they've got to be kidding. For that same price you could get the 20GB Archos AV320, which does exactly the same thing and comes with an LCD screen built-in. I-O says they have plans to offer an add-on screen for the Riviera after it comes out, but they either need to seriously reconsider what they plan to charge for these things, or include a screen, otherwise why would anyone even consider buying one? The new Archos AC340 audio/video player 03/13/2003 10:20 AM

archosvideoplayer.jpgWired has some more details on that new personal video player from Archos, the AV340. The AV340 looks like it might be the real deal when it comes to watching video on the go: it can store up to 80 hours of video on its 40GB hard drive, has a 3.8-inch LCD screen, also plays both MP3s, and, with an optional attachment, can even be transformed into 3 megapixel digital camera.

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player?

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player? 08/02/2004 10:25 AM

nextsonyhdd1.jpg imageSo there's stink about this one possibly being a fake, but there's a new Sony hard disk-based video player on Japanese website CD Report that claims to have a 20GB hard drive crammed into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini (hence, the fake rumors). If it is legit, it is supposed to be released sometime around Christmas for a price in the neighborhood of $450 - not a bad price if it ends up being the real deal.

Of course, Sony learned from the HMP-A1 that people might actually like players that could support native MP3 playback, so the new unit is rumored to have only ATRAC support (that means, basically, that this thing will be a dud as a music player).

Update: Okay, we're talking fake here. Babelfish failed me and the intern is probably curled up in a nest of barely-legal college hotties. At least he better be.

Arex's PocketMX Video Player TypeP 06/08/2004 12:36 PM

rwc01_typep.jpg imageCan't stop the flood of personal media players coming out of Asia, like this follow up to the Arex PocketMX dubbed the 'typeP.' Looking a little like a GBA SP, the typeP only plays video off of media from its internal SD slot (a limitation of the previous typeH version, as well), and while the display has a listed resolution of 380 x 234, it's also labeled as having a maximum playback resolution of 352 x 288 at 30fps. You'd think they'd try to get a processor in there that could at least match the integrated screen.

Many digital music fans are wondering if or when Apple will produce an iPod that sports a color screen and the ability to play back video, but Archos Inc. has stepped up to the plate with its own offering, the US$399.95 Gmini400. The company announced on Thursday that the Gmini400 is shipping. The 20GB hard drive-based digital music player features a 2.2-inch color LCD screen plus video playback and gaming capabilities.

07/30/2004 07:07 AM

toodia_i01.jpg imageWell, you can say one thing about the TooDis MPal 400F flash memory video player: your hand isn't going to get tired watching movies on it. Well, not the hand holding it, anyway. The flash player has a 12-hour playback time on a single AA battery, although it must first convert all your movie files into the MMF format that resizes them to better fit the 400F's 1.8-inch screen. And although it's available in sizes up to 1GB, the lack of an on-board memory slot sort of kills a lot of the potential usefulness of the device. Still, I have to say I sort of like it. I wouldn't pay a lot of money for it, mind you, but it's small enough to pack up and forget until you need it -- not many of the bigger, hard-disk personal video players are.

Today, we look at Digital Rights Management. A key question here is: "Should you distribute your video online?" Movie industry figures who have watched what happened in the music industry with Napster and its successors are determined not to find themselves in a similar predicament. When a movie studio invests $50 million in a film, it wants to be quite sure the work is not going to be passed around Kazaa and BitTorrent like so many MP3s. By Pearson Education, Inc. 1025
