Some days I wish I lived in LA, where everything is sunshiney and every confusing bit of gadgetry can be shrugged away as "magical," like the new DVD players being issue to Academy members that are supposed to help prevent the Oscar screener discs from being copied. Brother blogger Defamer attacks the issue in typical sidelong Gawker fashion, explaining how the destitute movie industry elite who make up the voting members of the Academy often are forced to trade in their screener copies for tiny nuggets of crack and Efferdent.

Is it really that big of a deal? I've downloaded screener copies before, but they were all compressed to hell. If the analog hole still exists on these magical units - likely - then it's not going to stop that lone jonesing VP from pushing out lossy analog copies to the net.

Mobile-Review has a breakdown of the new Motorola V3 "Razor" phone, an almost all-metal clamshell that surprisingly doesn't forego a lot of features to reach its tiny size. Similar in function to the v600, the titanium-clad V3 is still fairly wide, but manages to remain less than 14mm thin in profile even with lots of built-in features (like Bluetooth).

To launch this September between $650 and $750, this spiritual successor to the StarTac is yet another hot phone from Motorola that manages to waltz into a crowded phone market and instantly make its own segment. It may be small, but I expect sales of the V3 to be big (I can't believe I just wrote that).

It may be possible to so infect a movie with some kind of circuitry that allows people to copy to their heart's content, but the copied result would come out with decayed fidelity with respect to sound and color. Another would be to have some kind of design in a movie that would say, 'copy never,' 'copy once.'

Even ignoring the technical non sequiturs ("stuff ... algorithms into a movie"; "infect a movie with ... circuitry"), this is wildly implausible. Nothing has happened to make the technical prospects for DRM (anti-copying) technology any less bleak. We can only hope Valenti's successor stops believing in "technological magic" and instead teaches the industry to accept technical reality. File sharing cannot be wished away. The industry needs to figure out how to deal with it.

Shaving is an art. And like most art, or Perl, there's often more than one way to do it. For the last few years, my +3 Wand of Baby's Butting has been the Gillette Mach 3, usually with a very dull blade and lots of steaming foam (helped even more so by my recent installation of this little beauty in the shower). Now ConsumerWhore reviews the latest iteration of Gilette's Mach 3, the M3Power, a lime-green vibrating model that is powered by a AAA battery in the handle. He likes it well enough, not because it shaves more closely, but because it lets him shave faster. And if like mine, your Mach 3 was stolen by the ladyfriend to shave legs, a dual-purposed M3Power will be snatched up soon enough -- be sure to buy two.

The third site, created by NASA, discusses the details of the Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum and San Francisco's Exploratorium's live webcast of the Transit (3). The site supplies enjoyable, educational materials for students, educators, museums, scientists, and amateur astronomers. The next site, also created by NASA, provides an introduction to the Venus Transits that will take place June 2004 and 2012 (4). Visitors can find helpful figures and text about the geographic visibility of the events. The site offers an observer's handbook as well as a discussion about the predictions of the event. Next, Professor Backhaus presents a project where schools, amateur astronomers, and universities will collaborate to gather transit data and learn about observing (5). Mark Frauenfelder: My buddy Carlo Longino tried the battery-powered Mach 3 Turbo razor. He says it's not worth the $15. Too bad, I was going to buy one.

I switched to this from the Mach 3 Turbo, and frankly, I can't tell any difference between the shave I get with the two. Certainly not enough to justify the difference in price. I guess I've got loyalty to Gillette since they sent me a free Sensor razor on my 18th birthday or something (that ploy worked, eh?) and I've generally been pretty happy with their products and the results.
