Mobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchi
http://ope nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdf

Abstract by Author:
Free/open source software (F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open disclosure.

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools 05/17/2004 10:25 AM

Open Source: Open Source Scripting Made Easy: This is an article about PHP scripting tools that makes an important point:

Commercial scripting languages have drawn success from powerful and widely used development tools: ASP has Visual Studio, ColdFusion has Macromedia's Dreamweaver, and JSP has a variety of tools from commercial sources such as Borland and open source projects such as Eclipse and NetBeans. PHP's enormous success, however, is not tied to specific tools.

Some friends of mine have been working with Microsoft's .Net platform. They tell me it's amazing ("fan-friggin'-tastic," one of them called it). This is great, but I guess I don't like anything where the barrier to entry is so high — first you have to have a Windows server, then you have to have the Windows dev environment.

I code PHP in EditPlus, which cost me all of $30, and that was an optional purchase because there are so many other free alternatives. Maybe I'm just a snob. Via PHP|Architect.

Making Beautiful Music By Circuit
Bending
06/03/2004 03:32 PM
With all the disposable electronic gadgetry that seems to accumulate around us, it's nice to see that people still use old electronics to do cool stuff. No, not making a fishtank out of an iMac. We're talking about "circuit-bending" music -- made from hacking old speak-and-spells, Furby dolls and dot matrix printers. Granted, it's not a completely new concept since I seem to recall Jimi Hendrix used to re-wrap the coils in his guitar pickups to get more feedback and flavor to his sound. But it's interesting that the interfaces for musical instruments may be becoming more and more circuit-driven. For example, there's even a grand piano made from a circuit printed on cardboard. Obviously, it's not like classical instruments are ever going to die completely, but maybe kids won't have to lug around big trombones anymore. Or maybe circuit-bending music will get killed off when these circuit-bent musicians get sued for inappropriately hacking the hardware they use.

Is XM Bending Over Backwards To Make
Satellite Radio Less Useful?

Is XM Bending Over Backwards To Make
Satellite Radio Less Useful?
08/30/2004 01:37 PM
Last week, we wrote about how XM Radio and the RIAA were getting increasingly concerned about someone who dared to make some software that would recor d XM radio feeds. According to people at Broadband Reports, XM has become so upset about this that they have pulled their PC receiver from the market while they look for a solution to this "problem." It's quite a world when it's considered a problem that someone has made your service more useful. The note at Broadband Reports also claims that XM is considering removing USB ports from future equipment for the same reason. Both of these seem unconfirmed at the moment, so it would be nice if there were some real confirmation on either rumor. However, the satellite radio business is in a tough position. For all the success they've been claiming in signing up customers, they're nowhere near profitability. Their capital costs are incredibly high, and the thing they need, more than anything else, is more subscribers. Shutting down tools that make their offering more compelling just means they're making their job that much more difficult. Hopefully, it's not true, and this is just a baseless rumor, perhaps caused by the product being out of stock.

Pervasive networks—a ubiquitous “fabric” of computing, information, entertainment, and telemetry capability tied together by high-speed wired and wireless networks—are emerging from a flurry of new communication technologies now being used in home and office networks. Though communications carriers do not offer this type of continuous communication as a service today, the piece parts are already in place. [PRWEB Dec 20, 2004]

Orkut Circuit

Orkut Circuit 01/25/2004 10:32 AM

After my first lap (day) of Orkut, I got these to share.

It's supposedly writ ten in ASP.NET.  That one surprised me.

It has many security and privacy issues just as other social networking services have.  For example, one can send a message to thousands of members with only a few clicks.  There could be some XSS (cross-site scripting) problems as well.  But, overall, I have yet to see anything that can be resolved over time given sufficient technical and financial interests.

Invitation-only aspect of Orkut blew me away in terms of its effect and its meaning.  Since you can't just register without an invitation from someone within, it creates a sense of value that drives people to signup.

As to the meaning, what invitation-only means is that everyone who is a member of Orkut knows Orkut himself through a string of friends.  It means you have joined a six-degree of separation experiment where the starting end is Orkut Buyukkokten.  I'll bet that was why it was named Orkut.

I am not yet convinced that there exists a workable revenue model behind Orkut but then I have similar opinions about Rovers in Mars.  Entertaining thoughts about what might lie beyond the horizon with a bunch of geeky friends is a reward enough for now.  To this end, I created an Orkut Community titled “Orkut Design” to examine Orkut in detail.
