First of all I caution all of you that are not computer experts to proceed at your own risk. It appears Microsoft is reporting that if you have Service Pack 2 Release Candidate 2 installed you can merrily surf along with Internet Explorer.

Bur the 2nd service pack for Windows XP is just that a release candidate still under test and while it probably would not break your installation of windows it could screw up a some of your programs. Companies that are affected by changes to XP from the service pack are rushing to update their products so that they can be ready when Microsoft releases the Service Pack for the average user. When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

for DirectX 9.0b on Windows 2000,

(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

Open source stacks such as XAMPP from Apache Friends are simplifying open source development by making it easier to write and distribute applications in a stable and standardized environment. Traditionally, AMPP -- Apache, MySQL, PHP, and Perl -- have all been installed and configured as separate products. The trend of combining them into integrated middleware stacks promises to make open source development more competitive with J2EE application development, at least for low-end application

Testing PHP5

Testing PHP5 02/16/2004 03:36 AM
Now that PHP5 beta 4 has been released, it might be useful to share how we all do our testing of different PHP versions.

We find it quite bothersome to reconfigure our web server(s) everytime we want to switch between different versions of PHP4 and PHP5. So we have automated all our testing on Windows using the command-line interface to PHP5.

PHP5 beta 4 allows us to define a php.ini configuration file in the same directory as the php.exe executable. We will first modify php.ini, setting extension_dir and include_dir, and enable the appropriate extension=* settings. Then we have a standard DOS batch file that will run php.exe and unit-test ADOdb (the database abstraction library for PHP that I maintain). The output is generated to rez.html.

The last line of the batch file opens the resultant html file in IE. The "start" command will attempt to open any file if the extension mapping exists, e.g. "start rez.html".

The only disadvantage of this approach is that you are not testing PHP5's long-term interaction with the web server, and you need to have an existing set of unit tests that can be automated. This might not be possible if you testing mostly user interface code.

And what do i think of PHP5 beta 4? Two thumbs up. Didn't have to change anything in ADOdb to make it work with beta 4.

Sample DOS Batch File

Note: Each release of php5 is kept in its own sub-directory (c:php5php5b1, c:php5php5b2, etc). Tests are in d:phpadodbtests.

c:
cd php5
del *.html

cd php5b4 d: cd phpadodbtests

c:php test.php testmysql > c:php5rez.html c:php test.php testoracle > c:php5rez2.html c: cd .. start rez.html start rez2.html

A Review of PHP5

A Review of PHP5 02/26/2003 12:28 PM
PHP5 is comming closer and closer, and with that the Zend engine2.0 will change on how PHP handles OOP. To be ready for this I have made a overview of the new features that will be available when PHP5 finally arrives. I am also looking into creating extentions for PHP, and when my C skills gets a bit better I will try to dig through the source of the Zend engine and figure out what is what there. But for now I have some examples that should show you how the new features will affect you as a programmer when PHP5 arrives. -- Håvard Eide
