Women on Waves

Women on Waves 09/01/2004 08:36 PM
Portugal has a long tradition of protecting the human life. It was the first European country to abolish the death penalty, and more than 50% of voters rejected a 1998 referendum that would have liberalized abortion laws [en] (abortion is legal in Portugal if the pregnancy resulted from a rape, if it endangers the mother's life, or if the fetus is severely malformed; the morning-after pill is also legal). Now a Dutch boat from an organization called Women on Waves intends to pick women in Portugal, bring them to international waters (where the law of the boat's country applies: the Netherlands allows abortions for six weeks after conception, if not performed within 25 km from an Amsterdam hospital), perform abortions, and return them to land. The Portuguese government has refused entry to Women on Waves' ship, the Borndiep (previously Sea Change).

While many people in the nautical world have told stories of large freak ocean waves for years, in the past most people had dismissed the seemingly unlikely rogue waves as myths. New oceanographic research, however, has validated these tales.

First, the Environmental Literacy Council provides an introduction to rogue waves (1). Students and educators can learn about the many mysteries that surround the giant waves. Next, the European Space Agency (ESA) describes its findings of the widespread existence of very large ocean waves that may actually be a leading cause of the sinking of large ships (2). Users can learn about the advantages of using radar satellites to investigate the oceans. The third website presents the MaxWave research project's investigations of low frequency wave fields, extreme individual waves, and wave groups for deep and shallow waters (3). While data is not yet available, users can download publications and find information on meetings, conferences, and international participants. At the fourth site, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) present its past and future investigations dealing with rogue waves (4). Visitors can learn how conventional wave measurements and their assumptions make it difficult to discover freak waves. The fifth site, produced by the Mount Washington Observatory, provides a text and audio report by Robin White on rogue waves and the destruction the deadly waves can create (5). Users can learn ways in which the waves may develop. Next, PBS furnishes a summary of rogue waves and identifies where they are more likely to occur (6). Visitors can find a variety of fun, educational animations including wave simulations. Lastly, the University of Texas at Austin provides a pdf scientific paper discussing research that has helped scientists to distinguish between freak and non-freak waves (7). Students and researchers can discover and view graphs of the joint time-frequency characteristics of a freak waves. Optek Fretlight Guitar

Optek Fretlight Guitar 03/24/2005 02:53 PM

fretlight.jpgThe Optek Fretlight combines a standard Stratocaster clone with a light-up LED neck, making it easier to learn how to play the guitar or learn new songs. The Fretlight happens to be a MIDI guitar, too, so you can send signals to it from standard music applications, or even other instruments. That means your instructor could play a short riff, which would light up on your guitar. And with quoted prices around $600 or so, it's relatively affordable (compared to other MIDI guitars, at least).

Go For The Digital Guitar

Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar
02/18/2004 01:19 PM
Growing up, I always thought the coolest thing my father owned was a beautiful Les Paul Gibson electric guitar. The famous electric guitars really haven't change all that much over the years since they were introduced, but they're finally catching up to the digital age. Gibson is getting ready to start selling a digital version of the guitar. It looks and plays like a regular Les Paul, but the sound is sent out digitally, making it easier to manipulate. Instead of regular audio cables, you'll plug in an ethernet cable (no WiFi?). Of course, some traditionalists are upset, and others point out that people will need all new equipment to use such a digital guitar. Among the features of the guitar will be the ability to upgrade the guitar as the digital offering improves. My first thought on reading this, though, was how soon it would be before someone hacks their guitar. We no longer need amplifiers that can go to 11, because we'll just be able to overclock our guitars.

JamPlug Guitar Amp 08/16/2004 08:06 AM

7jamplug.jpg imageDVForge's new JamPlug, an in-line (well, I guess most audio equipment is inline, but bear with me) amplifier that is billing itself as the "World's Smallest Guitar Amp," and for once a world's-smallest claim is probably on the money. The $60 piece runs on a single AAA battery and has a pair of strangely-familiar matching white headphones. The thumb wheel controls volume, and it even can be overdriven into some quality of distortion, which probably isn't the best sounding fuzz or crunch or whatever in the world, but if it can free the legion of pimply guitar noodlers from the curse that is the Rockman Metal Ace, then the amateur rock world will surely be a better place.

Won't ship until October, but you can get on the list now to be notified.

Anyone who has ever used an external USB TV tuner to try and watch or record TV shows with their PC has probably discovered how the relatively slow speed of USB 1.1 translates into relatively low-quality video. This probably isn't the first one of these on the market, but there's a new external USB 2.0 TV tuner for PCs from Adaptec that all but solves that problem. The VideOh! DVD Media Center USB 2.0 Edition comes with software for automatically recording TV shows as MPEG1 or MPEG2 files and DVD creation software for archiving those same shows once you've run out of space on your hard drive. Hello Kitty Guitar

Hello Kitty Guitar 09/01/2004 09:36 AM

Although this Hello Kitty guitar is about four times the price of what I'd actually want to pay for it... hey, Hello Kitty guitar! The Fernandez-made electric has a built-in speaker and amplifier so you can plug a headphone right in and start writing your ode to ultimate adorability. And while the polka dot version is shown here, there is apparently a matching sparkly pink version the guy selling these can get a hold of. Now we're talking something worth $400.

What acolyte of rock wouldn't be proud to walk through a smokey club with a matching pink gig bag? None I would prefer to rock to, that's for sure.
