Following up on this BoingBoing post about rumors that access to TheMemoryHole is being blocked on military computers in Iraq, BoingBoing reader John -- who has a sister in the Army -- says,
It gets better. Awhile back I sent my sister a link to th e story about the man who could make art in cappuccino. She tried to access the story from the military hospital where she works. Here's what she sent back:

"for whatever reason, i can't open that from work. they blocked it and the screen pops up saying

The content category reported is Gen. News. Possible Solution If you feel this site was blocked in error, please contact the HelpDesk at DSN 371-2098 or send an email to. IMD Help Desk.

so, i will have to check that out later."

[John continues:]If the request was denied due to the Content Filter configuration is a sentence fragment, but with The content category reported is Gen. News. and If you feel this site was blocked in error, please contact the Help Desk the meaning is clear enough. For whatever reason, "General News" is not fit for our troops. I've been meaning to send her a list of links and ask her if she'd be willing to try to access them (Newsweek? New York Times? Common Dreams? Freerepublic.com [a conservative site]? townhall.com [another conservative site]?) I'm also curious what other kinds of sites she can't visit (geek news? music news? yahoo? wikipedia?) and whether she's prohibited from visiting these sites at work because she's /at work/, or if she's encouraged not to pursue the news in general.

Joi Ito points us to an interesting comment by one of his blog's readers, in response to this BoingBoing post about rumors some websites such as The Memory Hole may be blocked for access by military personnel in Iraq.
I'm on a civilian owned internet right now. That means if I chose, I can search for pornographic material right at this moment if I felt so inclined. However on a military computer, we use internet which is connected to a military owned server, broadcasted by our own Sattelites. These frequencies get filtered based on what the military deems is right and wrong. This includes shopping, games, pornographic material, dating services, chat lines, and perhaps some Blogs.

For those who felt they weren't being blocked from ANY site, well, if all you try to go to is Yahoo.com, then come on. Try out "bigkinkygirls.com" or something on a military computer. Or access a hate or racist site. Good luck. Sometimes, due to the filters, a site containing news and information may be blocked without the intention of cencorship. Such as some adult software blocks a childs report on Mule's simply because the webpage had the word ass in it.

NIPR's "Websense" software is strict and server based. And is controlled by a higher leveled ISO. If there is any doubt to the web pages contents, contacting the help desk should help them realise the mistake, and fix the situation upon investigation. But NIPR would rather block any suspected webpage, than allow one to slip through. But in the luckier parts of Iraq, the soldier is free to walk into a KBR internet cafe without cost. And many units supply them with free internet so that we may research, email our families, or simply have a good time at one of our favorite Blogs.

So yeah, that's boring, but probably good -- it means that Symbian won't become a Nokia-only company, and the other participants, like founder Psion, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Samsung, and Matsushita will get their fair share of attention. It also means Psion is about 92 million dollars richer, money they plan to use to expand their staff.

Misunderstanding The Success Of A
Copy-Blocked CD
06/18/2004 12:59 PM
People sometimes have a funny way of defining "success" of an offering. For instance, yesterday, there was a story that made the rounds about how the latest chart topping CD included copy-protection for the first time. The implication was that this showed how "successful" copy protection was - because people still bought the CD. That, unfortunately, is a very simplified analysis that is quite wrong. They're really asking the wrong question. The first question should be about the purpose of the copy protection. It's there to stop music from being shared. Yet, the songs from this particular album are apparently widely available on sharing networks. That seems like quite a failure of the main purpose of the technology. On top of that, the real issue is whether or not they sold more copies of the CD this way, then without. Ed Felten points out that the Amazon reviews and emails to Alex Halderman (who publicized the famous shift key workaround) show that all this technology has really done is annoy plenty of legitimate customers who aren't trying to do anything illegal. Looking at the Amazon reviews would obviously scare off many buyers who don't want to go through that hassle (and may actually drive them to file sharing networks so they can get the music they want to hear in a format they want to use). The summary is that you have a lot of angry legitimate customers who can't do what they want, and the songs are still being shared over file sharing networks. Plus, the labels had to pay extra to include the copy protection software. This is what the industry considers a success story?

Pre-Filtering The Spam

Pre-Filtering The Spam 06/29/2004 03:54 PM
My anti-spam system now uses a variety of server and client side filters to help keep the damn stuff out of the inbox. Now, some are suggesting an even earlier level "pre-filter" for spam. HP Labs has made a fairly simple discovery that even without various email authentication systems, it's pretty easy to get a quick determination as to whether or not an email is spam. The system they developed looks at whether or not the server sending you the email normally sends good emails or sends spam. With that one determination, they can properly pre-classify emails at a pretty high success rate. It's not a replacement for a spam filter at all. They know it's not that good. However, what it can do is do a pre-sort for prioritization purposes -- so that good emails tend to make it through the real spam filters faster. In a number of ways, it's pretty sad that we now need "quality of service" setups for our email.

Spam filtering, the next chapter

Spam filtering, the next chapter 05/24/2004 09:17 AM
I've been experiencing good results filtering out spam with a combination of Popfile (a Bayesian classifier) and the built-in filter in Eudora 6.  I get well over 1,000 spams a day, so I need accuracy both in identifying spams and avoiding false positives with legitimate mail.

The biggest problem with my setup is that it all runs on the client side.  Popfile works as a transparent proxy that runs on my Windows machine.  I don't see the spam in my inbox, but I still have to download it before it can be filtered.  As the spam volumes have increased, that has become an increasingly significant burden.  Every check pulls down scores of messages, most of which wind up in the trash.  I've had several cases where the sheer numbers crash Eudora. Getting email through my Treo is basically a waste of time, because it doesn't have the filters.  If I'm on the road and don't check my mail, there are thousands of messages waiting for me when I get back.

I finally had time this weekend to set up filtering on the server side.  Werbach.com and my other domains run through a Web hosting provider, Pair Networks, which offers a version of SpamAssassin.  The tricky part was configuring it to automatically filter or delete messages, using procmail, rather than just putting something in the email header for later processing on the client.

I think I have it working now.  I'm using SpamAssassin on a forgiving setting, because the client-side filters are still running after the mail goes through.  If I can just weed out 60% of my spams before they reach my machine, life would be much better.  So far, it looks like I can do significantly better than that.

I'm still tweaking the set-up, so it's possible some legitimate email will get stuck in the filters.  If you write to me and don't get a response for a while, please try again.

Collaborative filtering with del.icio.us

Collaborative filtering with del.icio.us 06/24/2005 09:34 PM
There are currently 6550 del.icio.us folk with whom I share common bookmarks. As nobody will be surprised to see, my link affinity with that population displays the now-familiar long tail:
del.icio.us affinity
There's a recommendation engine lurking in there somewhere, and I've decided to try to flush it out. The prototype is a two-stroke engine. First, it captures the set of del.icio.us users on the steep part of the curve -- the ones with whom I have the most link affinity. Then it reads all their RSS feeds, coalesces the links, and applies another filter to select just the links above a threshold of commonality. ...

ISP Hesitate Over Spam Filtering

ISP Hesitate Over Spam Filtering 06/03/2004 02:24 AM
As the spam battle wages on, most of the focus is on end-users and law enforcement. Not too many people seem to focus on the role of ISPs, who sometimes do take a more proactive role in stopping spam. The problem, though, is that when the ISP filters spam, they often run into issues with false positives. If the filters are too loose (to avoid false positives) then too much spam gets through, and users are upset. If the filters are too tight, important messages go missing, and users are upset. Many ISPs are realizing, at the very least, they need to let the end-user have access to the spam folder, so they can occasionally sort through it for false positives - but very few users ever bother to look through it. Some ISPs don't offer any kind of filtering at all, claiming that they don't see how to make money off of it - which seems especially short-sighted. If they can offer sufficient spam filtering, they're much more likely to keep customers than if they simply let everything through when customers are looking to their providers to provide protection from the onslaught of spam. No matter what, it's becoming clear that the spam fight needs to be approached from various angles, and many customers are likely to bail out on ISPs that don't at least offer a spam filtering option.

Bayesian spam filtering for the masses 10/30/2003 11:59 PM
Spam, or unsolicited commercial e-mail, is now a sad part of everyday life online. Research companies estimate that more than 50% of the worldwide e-mail traffic is spam. As a result, it's becoming constantly more difficult and time-consuming to sort out legitimate e-mails from the deluge of commercial messages we're being flooded with. But there are ways to fight back. In this series, we'll walk through choosing and setting up a highly effective package for screening out spam.
