World Population Reaches 6.4 Billion:
What To Do?
01/23/2004 07:40 PMA "population clock" at ibiblio.org projects that world human
population will reach 6.4 billion on January 27, 2004. Over 97% of
population growth is now in developing countries (Haub, 2003). This
growth will worsen the impact of many negative social and ecological
trends. Current demographic developments indicate the population
explosion may be slowing. Two trends account for this: The birth rate
is starting to slow in many developing countries (reaching a
population replacement level) and the death rate is increasing in some
of the poorest countries.

Music player market heats up
Music player market heats up
03/19/2005 03:27 AMDigital music players have exploded into the mainstream market with
Apple leading the pack, offering some of the most pricey players
available. After introducing the iPod in 2001, Apple has become the
digital music market leader, currently holding 80% of the market in
the United States.
Pew Internet & American Life Project in February found that about a
quarter of people with household incomes of $75,000 or more owned
digital music players but only 6 percent owned the devices among those
earning less than $30,000.
"iPods and MP3 players are becoming a mainstream technology for
consumers" Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life
Project said. "More growth in the market is inevitable as new devices
become available, as new players enter the market, and as new social
uses for iPods/MP3 players become popular."
Apple introduced the iPod shuffle in January at the Macworld
Conference & Expo in San Francisco. The introduction of the shuffle
was a change from Apple's regular iPod price tag, with the device
selling for less than $100. This price breakthrough for Apple allows
those have been seeking a lower price point to purchase one of the
sought-after iPods while still maintaining a bank account balance.
A recent surge of iPod clones have been tossed into the market,
confusing iPod desirers with their similar names and looks. A
Taiwan-based maker of digital audio products, Luxpro, introduced its
Super shuffle digital music player at the CeBIT conference in Germany
last week. Luxpro's Super shuffle is nearly identical to Apple's
iPod shuffle measuring in at nearly the same size but, unlike Apple's
iPod shuffle, it offers a voice recorder and FM tuner. The company
even had iPod silhouette-style advertising to promote the device
around the show.
Another Asian company, Orient Expert Technology Co., Ltd., introduced
an iPod-copied device called IPOD Mini. Like Apple's iPod mini, the
Orient Expert IPOD has a 4 GB hard drive but offers an optional FM
tuner.
With the market finding more competition, even if it is among direct
clones of the iPod, prices in the market are dropping with the
introduction of competitive devices offering additional features, at a
lower price. With this in mind, Apple may have to consider offering
additional features and lower prices to stay at the head of the game.

03/17/2005 04:22 AMTechnology research firm iSuppli expects the MP3 player market to
continue its expansion in 2005, growing some 57 percent year over

doubled in size during 2004. The firm said much of the success was
related to the mass appeal of Apple's iPod.
