Blogger founder Evan Williams revolutionized personal publishing. With its suite of free, easy-to-use tools, Blogger brought web-logging into the mainstream. Williams sold his company to Google, and eventually left. But now he’s back with a new tool for a new revolution: podcasting.

Evan Williams has redefined "RSS" as a synonym for "syndication", so when people ask "Why is Google supporting Atom instead of RSS?", they'll just answer "Atom is a form of RSS". What a great way to attack RSS and co-opt its publicity at the same time.

Interview with Wikipedia founder

Interview with Wikipedia founder 08/06/2004 01:14 PM

Slashdot is carrying a great interview with the founder of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is only about three and a half years old, but in that time it has already grown well beyond the size of most standard printed encyclopedias. In the interview, Jim Wales talks about how they manage all that content, how they collect and spend donations to keep it running, and what the future holds for Wikipedia. While Wikipedia isn't Creative Commons licensed content, it is licensed in a similar open fashion and this interview provides insight into what it takes to run a massive open and free content project.

In your opinion what are the strengths and what are the weaknesses of PostNuke? In other words, what does PostNuke do best for web publishing? What could it do better?

There are many strengths. Our security is very good. We do have the occasional security report, but we always respond as quickly as possible. I think our permission system is the best on the market in terms of flexibility and overall control. Our innovation toward overall content management is also coming together in our next release cycle. Most of all our community is our strength. We get daily contributions and ideas. Without the community, we probably wouldn't have near the amount of innovations that we have had in the past year.

Interview with Michael Kimsal, founder
of Tap Internet
10/09/2002 11:48 AM
Michael Kimsal runs a company that does PHP training. I thought it would be interesting in finding out how other people learnt PHP, so we agreed to an interview.

What do students (of PHP) find hard to learn?

The hardest areas of functionality we used to try to cover in detail were PDF generation and using GD. Every student *wants* to know how to do these things, but usually when they start to see how difficult it is to build PDFs and graphics by hand with the individual functions, they want to skip it! :)

We've begun introducing JPGraph and HTMLDoc overviews which help demonstrate the practical benefits of graphic and PDF generation while giving them an easier way to get those benefits.

In terms of PHP itself, many students trip up over single quote/double quote issues, variable name case-sensitivity and basic variable name typos. Variable scope is something which catches people offguard too, but is normally covered and drilled into them by the second day - usually no problems with scoping after day 2.

PHP OO, limited as it is, is also mixed. Some students find it quite straightforward, some struggle, and some reject it outright. Just like the PHP community at large. :)

Odeo is Hijacking Feeds! (Not anymore
See the Update)
06/17/2005 03:50 PM

Update: Situation looks to be resolved be sure to read this response from ODEO they say it was a mistake, and I am surprised more beta testers did not call them out on this. Are people so immune these days that they will just let companies do what they please with their RSS feeds. Obviously they went to General Quarters after I posted this, but I wonder if anyone had said anything, if they would have continuesd re-packaging everyones RSS feeds the way it was. I am still confused on the purpose of those odeo.com replicated RSS feeds. If I get a invite to the Beta I will take a closer look.

The article that started resulted in the change!

I had a beta tester that got a close look at Odeo send me some information. Apparently Odeo is taking all of the Podcast it has in it's current directory and creating their own custom RSS feeds.

First of all this really wrong in a big way. Here is my normal podcasting feed. http://www.geeknewscentral.com/podcast.xml what Odeo is doing, so I am being told, is creating a custom feed http://odeo.com/channel/rss/411 that has the same content of my above referenced feed (maybe) what does this do. Well it is deception in the fact that they have Hijacked my feed without permission, and are in a sense re-directing it.

Picture 4.jpg

Odeo is going to have to learn to play nice in a hurry, if this is indicative of what they are going to be doing, their are going to be a bunch of very pissed off people.

Odeo I am happy you listed my show in your directory, but I want you to point to my original RSS feed, "the one that I own and control", and am responsible for. I don't want possible listeners to this show that find me on your site to think somehow that I am a part of your network. I also don't want you sticking in any advertising or collecting any metrics about my listeners. Plain an Simple.

Be a good citizen and point to everyones original feeds!

Ev Williams must have had a Lobotomy

Ev Williams must have had a Lobotomy 05/26/2004 10:22 AM

I was surprised today to read a post from Ev Williams founder of Blogger who must have had a Lobotomy when his company was purchased by Google. His continued disregard to support RSS on his site is apparent. He has the audacity to tell a person who sent him flowers over his comments on RSS recently to go and use a service that will convert Atom to RSS. Why would she want to use a outside service when their all powerful weblog engine should be able to create multiple flavors for her automatically.

He obviously has lost touch with those that helped him get to the position he is today or the powers that be at Google have tied his hands. [Evhead ]

Back seat driver? Next time you get to drive a Williams F1 BMW around Indianapolis, you will want to know how to do it right. Thanks to the onboard telemetry spy system you can see how Ralf Schumacher tachs to 19000 rpm as he shifts up to 4th and reaches 333 kph on the straightaway, as recorded on the te lemetry display (SWF). Compare with other tracks.
