Happy Birthday Dad
Happy Birthday Dad
12/30/2003 12:08 AMAwoke this morning to the year's first dusting of snow on the ground
and a bit more of it floating in the air. I'm in the kitchen with four
kids: two are my own and the other two are neighbourhood strays
belonging, I believe, to the Lantz clan. I am brewing up a round of
the foamy hot chocolate I make with the espresso machine and for which
I'm enjoying a small degree of fame among the local 3-6 year old set.
I have Tom Waits' Pony blaring on the stereo and we're embroiled in a
bitter debate about whether...

Not one to argue with highly pregnant women, we took off for st.
barnabas hospital in new jersey. 4 hours later our princess was born,
to the sounds of 'in my life' by the beatles that was playing on wltw

Happy Birthday, Internet!
04/09/2004 04:05 PMThirty five years ago today, the first ever RFC
was filed with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). RFC 1
describes software and protocols for transferring data on the planned
ARPA Network.
During the summer of 1968, representatives from the
initial four sites met several times to discuss the HOST software and
initial experiments on the network. There emerged from these meetings
a working group of three, Steve Carr from Utah, Jeff Rulifson from
SRI, and Steve Crocker of UCLA, who met during the fall and
winter.
The document describes software for an 'IMP', or 'Interface Message
Processor'. Today that's evolved into Internet
Protocol (the IP in TCP/IP), and if you're reading this, you just
used it.

"Think of it. We are blessed with technology that would
be indescribable to our forefathers. We have the wherewithal, the
know-it-all, to feed everybody, clothe everybody, give every human on
earth a chance. We know now what we could never have known
before—that we now have an option for all humanity to 'make it'
successfully on this planet in this lifetime. Whether it is to be
Utopia or Oblivion will be a touch-and-go relay race right up to the
final moment."
