How Dotster cost me days and days of
downtime: stay away from this registrar
08/12/2004 07:36 AMA year ago, the DNS for craphound.com disappeared. Which was weird,
because I was paying for DNS with Dotster, my registrar.
I called them up and spoke to their tech support people. "Oh yeah,"
they said, "your paid service ended a month ago but our billing system
was broken so we didn't send out a notice. So we terminated you for
nonpayment. But dude, you're lucky! We gave you a free month's DNS!"
Lucky lucky me. I got a free month's DNS and to pay for it, I was
bouncing mail all over the Internet and my Website wasn't resolving.
Bastards. I bought two years' worth of DNS and vowed that when the
domain came up for renewal, I'd switch away from Dotster. I sent them
an email telling them as much and got an email back apologizing and
saying that they would certainly never terminate my DNS wihtout notice
again (you see where this is going, I trust)
Craphound.com is up for renewal at the end of August. Not wanting to
leave things to the last minute, I changed over early this month,
switching registrars to Domain
Direct, who are now the registrar for all of my domains, and
boingboing.net besides.
I didn't move over the DNS -- I figured I'd paid Dotster for another
year's service, I might as well get it. Instead, I left myself a
reminder in my iCal for next July to set up DNS at DomainDirect a
month ahead of the service running out on Dotster.
This morning, Dotster terminated my DNS. Without warning. And when I
called, they told me there was nothing they could do about it. Even
though there's nothing in my DNS contract that says that DNS is
provided to domains registered with Dotster and no others, that is,
apparently, their policy. And they can't make exceptions. Not even for
48h while I effect a graceful change to DomainDirect (who have been
fantastic throughout and now have 100 percent of my domain
registration and DNS business).
Bastards.

We compla
ined about the idea of disposable DVDs last year. Again, let me
say that I'm not a left-wing tree hugger or anything, but there's
enough disposable stuff in the world already (and calling it "one-time
use" doesn't change anything).
The California Assembly will debate a bill in coming weeks that
would force companies to provide a return envelope for each
unsolicited CD they send out, possibly crimping the marketing plans of
companies like America Online.
Berkeley Assemblywoman Loni Hancock introduced the so-called Return
to Sender bill this week. It would mandate that a postage-paid
envelope be included with unsolicited CDs in mass mailings of 200 or
more discs. Disposable DVDs such as Disney's 48-hour EZ-D must also
include a return envelope for customers' use.

Things are really crazy at the convention. There's a lot going on,
all at the same time, and up here in blogger's alley, we've got the
loudspeakers pointing right at us, and crowds cheering, waving signs,
and just being generally raucus. Even the lousy dancing during the
breaks. I looked over and commented to some of the folks here about
the need for a "7th Inning stretch" - and then it hit me - that's what
the dancing is for. But I sure wish they didn't televise it, it's
painful. :-)

09/15/2004 02:22 AMHere's Peter Caputa's reaction to Stowe Boyd's ideas on making money
with social networking. The one thing we're ALL in agreement with -
it ain't "pay to play".
Here's Peter's post:
In reference to Ryze's recent changes, Stowe has spouted some
predictions on what biz
models will work:
In the final analysis, I bet that pay-for-play won't work.
Open social networking services, even those that are oriented toward
business, will need to operate on a more egalitarian footing: where
all members have basically the same rights and privileges, even if
there is a fee for membership based on servcies rendered.
The money making model will have to come from corporate sponsors
and advertisers of various sources, who want to have their banners
flying behind the activities going on at various virtual 'plazas',
watering holes, and chat rooms that are associated with specific
communities or interest groups. For example, IBM might sponsor a
number of virtual setting that attract people interested in open
source, or Sony could sponsor areas related to consumer electronics
people.
I agree that advertising will be the preferred way for the user.
People won't pay for what they get for free. And if Marc Canter's vision takes
off, they won't need to.
Since, I am in the trenches trying to sell this stuff... The
unanswered questions I see are: how much advertising/promotion will
people take? And will advertisers get an ROI from the different
methods that different social networks use to let them reach their
audiences?
I'll share our ROI numbers as we get them. I'll know in a month or
so, how much ROI I can deliver to event organizers using social networking and incentivized word of mouth promotional
techniques.

In 90 martian days, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit

One of the best days of her life
One of the best days of her life
06/01/2004 11:58 AMOn Sunday I had a special date with my seven year old second cousin,
McKenna. We planned to go clamming together, that is, dig up clams on
the beach at low tide. (And then take them home and eat them!) The day
broke clear and warm, a slight breeze but nothing too chilling. We sat
in the sun as we awaited the low tide in the early afternoon. And as 1
PM neared, we climbed into the pickup truck with our rakes, basket,
and brand new rubber gloves and headed to the western end of the
island. Our destination was a small strip of land inside Madaket
Harbor called Jackson's Point (here's a map of west Nantucket, we went
right above the "E" on the map).
We arrived to find the beach deserted, not only of people but of the
soft-shelled clams (aka "steamers") we'd hope to dig up. The sand was
littered with empty scallop shells as we began our explorations. Soon
we happened upon clusters of mussels all wrapped together in sand,
mud, and grass and we changed our plan. Mussels it would be! We
gathered about three pounds as we explored the beach at low tide.
In addition to mussels, we found a knobbed whelk (the whelk was still
inside the shell) and the cutest little hermit crab. We watched sea
gulls catch and eat crabs on the beach and collected some shells. And
after it was all done, we drove into town for an ice cream cone. More
than once McKenna said to me, "Meghan, this has been one of the best
days of my life!" And you know what? It was a really special one for
me too.
That night, McKenna and I steamed the mussels for the rest of our
family. Since we didn't have any white wine, we substituted beer
instead. Everyone agreed the mussels were delicious. If you like
mussels, why not try McKenna and Meghan's Mussels next time you're
preparing some.
