Investigation

Bob Dole writes "Another major speed cam screw up has forced the government in Victoria, Australia to test all of their cameras and "freeze" $6 million in fines. This comes in response to a truck being issued a ticket for driving a speed 20 MPH faster than it is physically capable of attaining. Uphill. Following last week's embarrassing flap, the government had little choice -- except they refuse to go so far as to turn off the cameras while they're under a cloud of doubt. On the other side of the planet, a single camera in Britain has raked in $50 million for the government and issued 1.3 million penalty points for the enrichment of insurance companies. Ah, that should help explain the reluctance. "

Bob Dole writes "Red light and speed camera supporters always claim that the camera never lies. These news items suggest otherwise. An Australian woman lost her license because a speed camera showed she was driving 104 MPH. The problem? Her nearly 30 year old Datsun's top speed is only 73MPH. Likewise, a Raleigh woman found herself trying to fight a camera ticket sent from a city she has never visited. Back down under, the police escorted hundreds of Aussie motorcyclists into a speed camera trap as they drove to an event organized by the police. Police collect $12,000. In each case, the use of machine enforcement causes the burden of proof to be placed on the innocent. They're each forced to fight city hall every time the camera is wrong (which is more than the proponents admit). The revolt against this setup grows in the UK with speed camera operators calling in sick because of the "stress" caused by angry motorists." This seems to be getting a lot of attention lately. We've also had another submission as frankiejr writes "Seems as though a woman in South Wales was clocked at 480mph by a speed camera and was promptly issued a ticket. Funniest part about it is that it was a really cheap car that can barely reach 50mph." Seems like this is the topic of the season.

Any Internet photo printing services
that can deal with Camera RAW?
12/17/2004 06:35 PM

Out here with my cousins in the Bay Area the question of how to print some of those Thanksgiving photos arises.  Are there any Internet printing services that let you upload camera RAW format images and print from those?  That would be the best quality, presumably.  Please add any recommendations of good printing services for high-res files in the comments section.  Thanks!

.pro Loophole

.pro Loophole 04/13/2005 11:10 AM

Co. Finds Loophole on '.pro' Web Names: I'm not completely clear on how the ".pro" TLD was supposed to work. This article talks about how, if you were a lawyer, you could get a "mycompany.law.pro" name, provided you had the correct proof that were indeed a law firm.

Well, good intentions aside, there's a company that is letting anyone buy ".pro" names.

But last month, EnCirca Inc. began offering second-level names without the third-level requirement and said any profession at all could get one. It also expanded the service beyond the four countries in which credentialing procedures had been established.

ICANN responded by saying this company "violates the spirit" of the ".pro" extension. Gosh, that'll get them to stop.

UK Worried About eBay Gun Loophole

UK Worried About eBay Gun Loophole 11/04/2003 12:09 PM
Over in the UK, they're suddenly worried that people are sneaking guns into the country via eBay. eBay won't sell guns, but will sell gun components - which are being ordered and then assembled once arrived. UK politicians are now trying to close this loophole by banning the sale of even components. This really does seem like a waste of time. If people are really intent on getting themselves weapons, they're going to do so, whether through eBay or other means. That doesn't mean they should be easy to get, but is it really worth the trouble of banning a loophole that already is being used by the sort of folks who will immediately search out a new loophole? Also, considering that eBay seems willing to hand over private info at the first phone call from anyone representing themselves as law enforcement, you'd think that police in the UK might prefer to simply use eBay to keep tabs on just who is importing and building these guns.
