FastMac on Monday announced an iPod battery upgrade that utilizes patented nanoparticle technology. The company's new upgrade utilizes patented nanoparticle technology codenamed “TruePower,” that significantly slows the degradation of the battery by protecting and preventing damage to the battery’s internal lithium crystal matrix caused by power spikes. “If you’re spending more time recharging your iPod than you are actually using it, this upgrade is for you” Business Development Manager for FastMac Performance Upgrades Michael Lowdermilk said. “This really is the last battery your iPod will ever need.” The upgrade is available for first, second and third generation iPods and comes with a two-year warranty.

Review: FastMac 1.5GHz PowerMac G4 AGP
Upgrade
08/19/2004 03:16 PM
For this week's Spymac product review, we decided to test out <a href="http://www.fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a>'s $499.95 (US) <a href="http://www.fastmac.com/products/processors/agp.php" target="_blank">1.5GHz PowerMac G4 AGP upgrade</a>. I'm sure that you've all seen the ads from various manufacturers in your favorite Mac magazine, "Turn your <a href="http://www.apple-history.com/noframes/body.php?page=gallery &model=aI" target="_blank">Apple I</a> into a <a href="http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore .woa/71807/wo/pM44OJcrcbC836LFmVOgbjooRJk/0.0.9.1.0.6.21.1.2.1.2.0.0.1 .0" target="_blank">Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5</a> with this simple hardware drop-in!" Could they be true? Is your early-model Macintosh able to serve a purpose better than that of a paper weight or professional dust collector? Well, I'm about to answer those questions for you, and more. I can still remember the day when I made the switch from PC to Mac. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and my parents had just lent me eight thousand dollars (NOTE TO PARENTS: "Thanks"). Her name, was <a href="http://www.apple-history.com/noframes/body.php?page=gallery &model=g4giga" target="_blank">G4 Gigabit Ethernet</a>, code name "Mystic", and she was beautiful. With her dual 500MHz processors, industry-first standard 1000 Base-T ethernet, 256MB of RAM, 40GB hard drive, ATI RAGE 128 Pro video card, internal DVD-RAM drive, 2 USB and Firewire ports and 250MB internal ZIP drive she could bring any application to its knees. Photoshop, "Bring it on". Illustrator, "HA." Director, "Tell me again about this 'rendering time', because I've never seen such a thing." But over time, the applications grew stronger, and while they were in development, with super houses around the globe beefing up, my baby was reluctantly nearing retirement. She was a tough old broad though, and could still run with the new kids on the block, <a href="http://www.apple-history.com/noframes/body.php?page=gallery &model=g4da" target="_blank">Digital Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.apple-history.com/noframes/body.php?page=gallery &model=g4_quicksilver" target="_blank">Quicksilver</a>, and even <a href="http://www.donniewahlberg.com/" target="_blank">Donnie</a>. Sadly though, we both knew that our time together was nearing an end, or was it? Enter <a href="http://www.fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a>. Based in the good ol' US of A, <a href="http://www.fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a> has been reuniting Mac lovers with their old flames since 1998. With upgrades available for almost every early-model Macintosh under the sun, it's almost guaranteed that you will love again (click <a href="http://fastmac.com/products/index.php">here</a&g t; for a complete listing of upgradeable machines). As previously mentioned, we chose to resurrect my Dual 500MHz Gigabit Ethernet G4 using the <a href="http://www.fastmac.com/products/processors/agp.php" target="_blank">1.5GHz PowerMac G4 AGP upgrade</a>. The company's website claims that, "in no time, your machine will once again be transformed into a tower of power," and by oh boy, they sure as heck weren't lying. On the morning that the processor arrived I decided to walk home for lunch. I opened the door, shouted, "Honey, I'm home," to no response I might add, and headed upstairs to my office. Once there, things couldn't have been any more simple. With one lift of my fingers, I opened the side panel of my G4 to expose its metallic innards. Armed with only a pair of common household phillips and flathead screwdrivers, I began the operation. Remove heatsink, "check," remove original processor "check," install new <a href="http://www.fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a> processor "check," smile at ease of process "check". Anyhow, once the new unit was installed, I followed the directions and rebooted my computer (for those of you who have never attempted a hardware installation in your life, this is the point at which your heart beats at approximately 130BPM, your head begins to sweat and every second seems like about ten hours). After a series of standard whizzes and purrs I saw that familiar start up screen. The air was then filled with cries of "Hallelujah!" and "Boo Yeah! Boo Yeah! Who's your daddy now sucka?" Time to test this puppy out, first stop, the System Profiler. By default, the upgraded <a href="http://www.fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a> processor comes preset for machines with a 100MHz bus speed, such as mine. Thus, immediately the System Profiler detected this wonderful new addition to the family and gave me the following readout, "CPU Speed: 1.5 GHz". So far, so great. What would be the next logical step in testing out this little gift from above? You guessed it, open up twenty applications including Photoshop, Illustrator, Director, iTunes, Final Cut Pro and Maya. After all twenty applications were open, I clicked on a song from my iTunes playlist and went to town on this processor. In every graphics application, applying filters was noticeably faster. It is here that I must make a confession however. When I first heard of the news that my dual processor tag-team would be exchanged for a solo single processor, I had my doubts. Two are better than one, right? Not in this case my friends. With multiple images being mutilated in multiple programs at a single time, the computer didn't even so much as hiccup. Most systems would have begged for mercy at this point, but my little warrior was begging for more. Why not throw some video rendering in there? How about some audio filters? Oh, what's that, you want some 3D rendering in there as well? Done. Still, she chugged on with a look in her eyes that seemed to say, "Is that all you got punk?" That was all that I had. Every operation performed faster. Whether it was something as big as rendering an entire video clip, or as small as opening a Finder window, the speed increase was noticeable. My baby was back, and she was better than ever. Taking into account all of the above, I give this product "Two Thumbs Up," "5 Stars," and a pat on the back. For only $499.95 (US) you can breathe new life into a computer that you once thought to be deceased. Not ready to spend that much on your baby (shame on you)? <a href="http://www.fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a> offers a number of G4 upgrades, such as the 700MHz upgrade, starting at $199.95 (US). However, there are other options available. Maybe you feel it's time to move on, maybe you can't stand the sight of her anymore, maybe, just maybe, it is time to move on. If you've lost that loving feeling, for around $799.00 (US) you can enter into a new relationship with the <a href="http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore .woa/71007/wo/S87qBIpMTyek26ptpLx1AYK02LN/0.0.9.1.0.6.21.1.2.1.0.0.0.1 .0" target="_blank">1.25GHz Combo-Drive eMac G4</a>. The choice is yours, so follow your heart. For more information on the <a href="http://www.fastmac.com/products/processors/agp.php>1.5GH z PowerMac G4 AGP upgrade</a>, and other available <a href="http://www.fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a> products, check out their website at <a href="http://www.fastmac.com">www.fastmac.com</a>. Products can be purchased online through their store, and the site also includes an FAQ section to help answer any questions that you may have. Oh, and there's one more thing, are you ready for this? The sale includes FastMac’s G4 processor upgrades for G3 and G4 PowerMacs and 16X Dual-Layer SuperDrives, both starting at $99.95. “We’re excited to be the first to offer a G4 upgrade for under $100” says Michael Lowdermilk, Business Development Manager for FastMac Performance Upgrades. “This sale is our way of giving those who’ve put off upgrading one less excuse.” For $99.95, Lowdermilk says the FastMac ZIF processor upgrade replaces the original CPU in a Beige or Blue & White PowerMac G3 with a G4 CPU operating at up to 500 MHz. It also doubles the backside cache from 512k to 1 full MB, resulting in a 3 to 4 times boost in speed & performance. Optical drives start at $99.95 for a 16X Dual-Layer SuperDrive upgrade for PowerMacs. Other drives are available for multiple models including: PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs, Cubes, and Mac minis. Lowdermilk says all FastMac processor upgrades are 100% compatible with OS 9 and X and take full advantage of the G4 AltiVec Velocity Engine. AGP processor upgrades carry a three year warranty and ZIF and optical drive upgrades carry a one year warranty. All products come with a 30 day money back guarantee, he says.

Xlr8yourmac recently reported that after they replaced their original iPod battery with one from Newertech they went from 4 hours to 21 hours of playtime. It cost them $40 and five minute's effort, (although this definitely voids the warranty). The $40 includes a tool set and installation guide, and if you tack on the coupon code 'HIGHROAD' when you check out you can get the NewerTech RoadTrip FM Transmitter device for only $9.99. Not bad, especially if you've got an older iPod (1st or 2nd gen) with a worn out battery.

iPod battery swap surprisingly easy

iPod battery swap surprisingly easy 09/08/2004 09:45 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Plenty of people have swapped a new battery into their iPod, so the fact that I did it, too, is nothing new. But the fact that someone as clumsy as I am did it in about ten minutes without destroying the iPod is surprising. If you're as fumbled fingered as I am and have been afraid to open your iPod, I hope this gives you the courage to take action.

Here's what happened: Last year, I gave my six-year-old daughter my old 10 Gig old-style iPod, because I got a 20 Gig model. Last month, she started complaining that the battery wasn't holding a charge. This is a known problem with iPods. Last week, her iPod was dying after running for just a few minutes. It was time to crack it open.

Using Froogle, I searched on "iPod battery" and found this replacement unit for $30. The shipping was around $6 and it arrived via 2-day UPS.

DSC03822When it arrived (on time), I opened it and found the battery, some instructions (the same ones found here), and a cute-as-a-button miniature screwdriver with a little clip on it so you can insert it in a shirt pocket. Following the instructions, I carefully inserted the screwdriver into the crack between the metal case and clear plastic lid. But the screwdriver's blade was way too thick to get into the seam. I ended up gouging the plastic.

DSC03827I set the screwdriver aside and grabbed a kitchen knife. It took about three or four minutes of tentative probing before I could get the knife blade worked in far enough to give me enough leverage to start to separate the top from the bottom. Once I got it started, though, I was able to use the adorable little screwdriver to pry the iPod the rest of the way open.

DSC03831The old battery was attached to the hard drive with a couple of strips of padded, double-sided tape. I tore the tape a little while removed the old battery, and one of the strips got stuck to itself, but it wasn't a big deal. The battery has a couple of wires coming out of it, ending in a tiny white plug that goes into a socket. It was easy to unplug. I took the new battery and stuck it onto the sticky tape. Then I plugged it in the little socket. The cover snapped right on.

DSC03834After charging it overnight, I gave it to my daughter and it has been running for hours. Mission accomplished!

lawsuit
06/05/2005 11:20 PM
Apple is offering consumers who had battery problems with older versions of the popular iPod digital music player $50 vouchers and extended service warranties under a tentative settlement in a class-action lawsuit. According to AP, lawyers representing consumers in the state court case said that the settlement could affect as many as 2 million people nationwide who purchased first-, second- and third-generation iPods through May 2004. Apple confirmed the settlement but has not officially commented. The settlement comes after eight consumers filed a suit in 2003, alleging that the iPod failed to live up to claims that the rechargeable battery would last the product's lifetime and play music continuously for up to 10 hours. According to the terms of the settlement, people who fill out a claim form are entitled to receive $50 redeemable toward the purchase of any Apple products or services except iTunes downloads or iTunes gift certificates. Consumers will be notified of the tentative settlement in three ways: by e-mail, by letters, and through advertisements in USA Today and Parade Magazine in the next month, said Elizabeth C. Pritzker, an attorney at Burlingame-based law firm Cotchett, Pitre, Simon & McCarthy LLP, which represented two plaintiffs. Apple has agreed to pay up to $2.8 million to the two law firms that represented consumers.

Couple Busted In Online Coupon Scam 04/15/2004 02:23 PM
Fake online coupons are nothing new, but this short AP article about a couple being arrested for selling thousands of dollars worth of fake online coupons has me a bit confused. The woman says she stopped as soon as she found out it was illegal - which raises a bunch of other questions not answered by the article. Was she creating the coupons herself? If so, then she must have known it was illegal. If not, where were they coming from? The article does mention that her husband was charged with "forgery, fraud, theft and other crimes," so it's possible that he was creating the fake coupons and giving them to her to sell. Still, you might think she would have asked where they came from. Of course, I also wonder who buys coupons? I always thought coupons were the things you got for free with the Sunday paper.

Safari
09/09/2004 03:31 AM
Coupons Inc. has announced that Bricks, the engine that drives online coupon distribution for a number of companies, now works with Safari in Mac OS X v10.2 and v10.3. Companies use Bricks to deliver coupons on their Web sites and ad banners as well as in their marketing e-mails, but the mechanism they use to approve coupon designs previously only worked in Windows. Now they can sign off on coupons in Safari, and consumers can use the Web browser to print coupons from such sites as Cottonelle.com and boxtopsforeducation.com (General Mills). The coupons are typically redeemed in retail stores.
