Wi-Fi/Cellular
04/09/2004 03:57 PMA Pyramid Research report ambitiously projects that Wi-Fi users will
outnumber cellular data users by 2007: Considering the number of Wi-Fi
users today and the number of cellular voice users, who have the
potential to start using cellular data, I find that projection
unlikely. But the point of the report is that wireless operators
should bundle the two types of services to take advantage of the
interest in Wi-Fi. That combination of services is exactly what will
drive Wi-Fi, concludes another analyst, this time from IDC. She
expects prices to decline when the services are combined which will
attract more users. In Europe in particular, analysts have been
critical of high Wi-Fi prices. The lack of extensive and easy roaming
combined with high prices are the main barriers to more Wi-Fi growth
at the moment. As the market matures, hopefully both of those factors
will fall into place. The head of BT Group's Wi-Fi business would
disagree, however. He claims that decreasing prices won't help the
market because price is only important to consumers not the business
user and business travelers make up the biggest customer base for
Wi-Fi. He doesn't think that lower prices in the U.S. have attracted
more customers....
Combined Wi-Fi/Cellular an Interim Step
Combined Wi-Fi/Cellular an Interim Step
08/19/2004 03:19 PMThe market for combining Wi-Fi and cellular on a single device is one
that hasn't quite been worked out yet: For cellular operators without
their own Wi-Fi plays, a combined device might not pay off and could
cannibalize their own cellular data networks. Technology Review
Magazine suggests that cellular operators may view the combined
devices as sort of a tease, to get users hooked on the idea of
higher-speed wireless data just in time for them to start unrolling
more ubiquitous and higher-speed cellular data offerings. The catch
will always be cost so there's a chance the tease may backfire. If
users get hooked on Wi-Fi networks that are free to access, they may
decide to go out of their way to find a free hotspot rather than pay
for the cellular access which at least these days is far more
expensive. However, it's likely that a certain market segment will pay
for the convenience of having the higher speed wireless data from the
cellular operators in more locations....

way for Signull to pull in potential customers and for the city to
offer a useful service for visitors and residents....

Near-Seamless Handoff for 802.11 Roaming
Near-Seamless Handoff for 802.11 Roaming
04/14/2005 10:03 AMTwo University of California San Diego scientists have developed a
better way of seamlessly handing off 802.11 roaming, making it
possible for people from one hotspot to another without dropping
connections. That's important not so much for data, which can handle a
dropped packet here and there, but for streaming audio, video, and
voice-over-IP.
The SyncScan solution proposed by Savage and
Ramani is a method to continuously monitor the proximity of nearby
802.11 access points. Instead of looking for surrounding access points
just when the current signal is running low, a Wi-Fi device with
SyncScan regularly checks signal strengths nearby -- but only for very
short periods of time. These times are picked to precisely coincide
with regularly scheduled "beacon" messages sent by all standard Wi-Fi
access points. The process eliminates the current need to start from
scratch when looking for a stronger signal, and replaces the long
scanning delay with many small delays that are imperceptible to the
user.

Patented Signal Handoff Hype, Promise
Patented Signal Handoff Hype, Promise
04/16/2005 06:42 PM
UCSD did a great job getting into the media this week with
a fast Wi-Fi handoff technology: SyncScan drops
a Wi-Fi adapter or appliance, like a VoWLAN phone, out of its
associated mode for a few milliseconds at a regular, defined interval
to check on signal strength. This avoids adapters swapping to a new AP
only when signal strength becomes unusable or nearly so.
SyncScan relies on a feature in Atheros's chipsets that's available
from the open-source madwifi drivers; it's the same sort of feature
(if not the identical one) that allows Atheros's WLAN switch partners
to offer RF monitoring on the same APs that are also handling client
data interchange.
Two problems with SyncScan's approach: first, it requires firmware to
be installed on the access point, which is fine for experimentation
and open-source projects, but otherwise needs signoff from major
firmware developers and their manufacturing partners; second, it's got
that patent-pending label attached, which always has the caveat of
causing resistance until fees are revealed.
SyncScan puts all APs within listening range of each other into a
synchronized beaconing mode so that the "I'm alive" signals happen at
fixed intervals. This allows adapters to only listen at discrete
periods and to get a clear idea of precisely what's happening in the
local RF space. But this coordination adds overhead and there has to
be a cost to synchronization and the inevitable resynchronization.
One of the IEEE 802.11 groups, 802.11f, was dedicated to fast
reassociation through preauthentication--tokens exchanged among APs at
Layer 3--but that doesn't help with fast reassociation on an RF level,
or Layer 1.

Wi-Fi to Cellular Roaming Stalled
Wi-Fi to Cellular Roaming Stalled
08/30/2004 09:56 AMeWeek has an interesting article talking about the hurdles the new
VoIP Wi-Fi and cellular-switching phones may have penetrating the
market. Even though companies like Motorola are developing systems
that allow cellphones to switch seamlessly to Wi-Fi, the thought is
that the savings provided to corporate infrastructure might be moot as
cellular rates continue to drop. Of course, the people who really want
this service are regular consumers like you and me, even though we are
probably going to be the last people to get it (it may be more
realistic to cheer on Verizon and other carriers to offer high-speed
cellular networks like EV-DO and EDGE).
But interestingly, hospitals may be the earliest adopters of the
Wi-Fi/cellular switching phones, specifically because of the dangers
cellular radios can cause to sensitive medical equipment. If the
phones switch to Wi-Fi, they can control the power levels to be weaker
and (presumably) safer.

Fast Roaming Standard
Fast Roaming Standard
01/26/2004 01:57 PMI wrote a short article for Infoworld about the proposal for a fast
roaming task group: If the IEEE approves the request, which most
involved think it will, a new standard will be hammered out to speed
up hand-off. The current mechanism for hand-off in the 802.11
specification isn't fast enough to support voice calls or other
multimedia applications. Today vendors have their own proprietary ways
to speed up roaming but they hope to come up with a standard way to do
it. Contrary to some earlier reports, Cisco told me that they are
supportive of the effort. If the standard ends up being very different
from the way Cisco currently handles roaming now, the company will
support both the standard and its own technology. Hopefully the
standards process will create an efficient and fast way to do
hand-off. While writing a different story for Infoworld about voice
over WLANs, I found that most of the proprietary ways to support fast
hand-off weren,t totally ideal. An improved hand-off mechanism may
encourage more voice over WLAN implementations....

VoWLAN Study Group?
01/16/2004 11:01 AMVoice over WLAN vendors have asked the IEEE to start a VoWLAN-specific
study group: Currently, aspects of 802.11 related to the needs of
VoWLAN are broken out in 802.11e (quality of service or packet
prioritization and scheduling), 802.11f (inter-access point
communication, which includes fast handoff of authenticated users),
and 802.11i (encryption). Voice calls need very fast handoff as users
roam, and the current standards are apparently not focused
specifically enough for some vendors. As expected, Cisco has its own
proprietary plans, yadda yadda yadda....

Calypso Starts Chasing Patent Infringers
03/06/2004 01:49 AMCalypso, which recently was awarded a patent on technology than
enables roaming between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, named vendors
that it says infringe on the patent: The company said that that patent
would have major implications on the way Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia
do business. The press release also said that companies that don't
want to license the technology right now but plan eventually to make
devices that roam between networks will have to obtain rights from
Calypso but doesn't explain why that's so. I've asked leaders of a few
companies such as Radioframe and Bridgeport--both are working on
roaming between cellular and Wi-Fi networks--for their take on the
Calypso patent and neither was interested in commenting. I had a
similar experience when looking for comment on the patent for redirect
that Nomadix received recently. However, this story quotes the CTO of
Birdstep as saying that its technology, which enables roaming between
the networks, doesn't interfere with the Calypso patent. Perhaps that
means that companies may be able to get around having to license from
Calypso. On a side note, parts of Calypso's Web site are pretty
amusing. On the company history page, I found this statement: "Calypso
stunned the telecommunication industry when it introduced the world's
first and only mobile video phone…" That's interesting as I'm not sure
I recall that happening nor have I heard of any operator selling the
product. I wouldn't call that "stunning" the industry....

the enterprise, listen to this interview with Telesym: I met over in

Telesym's position in the market, but more largely about the future of
VoWLAN. (Ken had to leave for a meeting, so I spoke primarily with
Mike in this podcast). You'll hear at the outset of the recording
after my introduction a conversation we had using Telesym technology:
I was on a USB headset connected to a Telesym client running under Mac

Netopia to Certify VoWLAN Phones
Netopia to Certify VoWLAN Phones
01/23/2004 04:14 PMNetopia said it has created a voice over Wi-Fi phone certification
program: The program will certify that voice over Wi-Fi phones
interoperate with Netopia's VoIP gateways. This is fine for Netopia,
but doesn't guarantee that such phones will interoperate with gateways
from any VoIP gateway. The CNET reporter who wrote this article could
afford to think a bit more critically rather than buying hook, line,
and sinker everything companies tell her. The story reads like an
advertisement for voice over Wi-Fi. She says here: "Some experts
predict that cordless Wi-Fi phones could eventually replace cellular
phones." I'd love to know who those experts are. Wi-Fi is a local area
networking technology and it's ridiculous to imagine that it would
ever cover the same amount of area as a cell phone network....
