Join the cult of bad jokes. 10/29/2003 01:15 AM

I tried and tried, but I just couldn't resist linking to this parody:

"Confirming their intent to battle Google's new Blogger service, MT then announced on its TypePad site that the it would be rendering all of its users' posts in image format- meaning that any blog hosted by the TypePad service would be immune to Google's awesome searching reach, because the blog entries would actually be images, rather than text ... Taking the incredible step to block your users' access to and from Google, the de-facto clearinghouse and meetinghouse of the Web, is a bold and almost paranoid move for MovableType to make in a war that hasn't even begun (neither the new Google-powered Blogger, nor MT's new TypePad sevice, have yet to launch). It's as if MT has forgotten how precarious their strong hold is over such a fickle group of fans."

For reference, the author was referring to this dollarshort.org post, which, I assume could have only benefitted from a "THIS IS A JOKE" disclaimer.

The confusion over my feeble attempts at humor has spurred us to create the <$MTJoke$> tag, which from this moment on, is a required Movable Type tag to be used when indicating sarcasm, gentle ribbing, playful jests and half-truths.

THIS IS A JOKE!

I guess my 26 paragraph screed on Google's gourmet chef wouldn't go over well either.

Realistic punchlines for old jokes

Realistic punchlines for old jokes 04/19/2005 06:16 AM
Cory Doctorow: Here's a Something Awful competition to come up with realistic punchlines to old, generally offensive jokes:
What do you get when you cross a chicken with a centipede?
A media circus about the debate over the morals and ethics of genetic engineering.

Why did the blonde get fired from the M&M factory?
Repeated absences and stealing.

Spammers Latest Trick? Dumb Jokes 07/06/2004 05:28 AM
Well, now you've done it. All those stupid jokes you've been sending around as friend spam has made spammers realize that to get past Bayesian spam filters, they shouldn't just paste in the text from classic pieces of literature, but instead just toss in a few lame jokes, and watch the spam fly right through filters. The article doesn't make the connection, but it seems quite likely that the reason these get through more effectively than other types of text is because so many people bombard their friends with stupid jokes as friend spam.

Via Wonkette, here's a slightly unfair but powerful rejoinder to President Bush's jokes about weapons of mass destruction. Media is in the hands of everyone, and people are going to use it to hold powerful people -- including media people, such as the Washington correspondents who found Bush's performance so hilarious -- to account.
People seem to really be embracing web video as a medium and it definitely delivers the message at a different level than text. Very interesting to see how this form develops.

Religious coverage

Religious coverage 07/17/2004 12:51 PM
Jay Rosen: Puzzling through the convention story, because I'm heading right for it, made me to realize that journalism's contempt for ritual—and if "contempt" is too strong, then the difficulty the press has in understanding the conventions as ritual—was deeply involved here. Ritual is newsless; therefore it must be meaningless. But is that really true? And that's what leads me to the forum now happening at The Revealer ... If a religion writer covered the presidential campaign, would campaign coverage be any different? My reasons for asking this months ago, when we started planning the forum, were vague. Now they're...

Life Everlasting-the religious right and
the right to die
03/29/2005 08:54 AM
Does the right to life trump the right to die? In an increasingly hysterical debate surrounding Terry Schiavo, Garret Keizer provides a thought-provoking analysis of who should decide when and how a person dies: "The alarms raised in America’s ongoing right-to-die debate have always been characterized by a curious selectivity. You will notice, for example, how the fear of playing God operates exclusively on one side of the medical playground. Thus to help a patient end his or her life “prematurely” is playing God, while extending it in ways and under conditions that no God lacking horns and a cloven hoof could ever have intended is the mandate of “our Judeo-Christian heritage” and the Hippocratic oath."
