Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company
12/22/2004 01:16 AM
Barry Diller has done a good job buying up various online "middleman" companies in a variety of spaces from travel to social networking to dating. However, he says too many people view InterActiveCorp as a travel company and that's making it more difficult to acquire non-travel companies. So, in order to prove that he's not running a travel company... he's going to show them what it means to really run a travel company. That is, he's going to spin off all of IAC's travel properties, including Expedia, Hotwire, TravelNow and Hotels.com, into one company (which he'll still run), and keep all the other properties as IAC. While it may be a good idea to realize the value of those other properties, from the beginning Diller kept talking about the synergies of having all of these properties under the same umbrella. Apparently, those synergies only go so far when the stock price isn't as high as he had hoped.

Bill Gates' employees were way ahead of the boss when it came to blogging, but it's good to see Gates' endorsement (BBC) nonetheless. If he gets it -- and he obviously does -- then a lot of other folks are sure to follow. I wonder how soon blogging will become a natural, integral part of the operating system. RSS would be a good start.

While much of the blogging world has been ga-ga over getting into the Democratic National Convention, it's tough to find anything interesting going on among the convention bloggers (to their credit, go turn on CSPAN today and see for yourself how boring it is). While our own Jessamyn is there (here are profiles of everyone going), I've found the strange CNN/Technorati partnership to be the most useful thing. Technorati founder David Sifry is basically doing a metafilter of all convention blogs over on CNN as the daily blog roundup, highlighting the posts worth reading among the participants.

I leave on a bus at 6am for 2-hour ride to LAX, then on a plane from LAX to JFK, then on another plane (different airline, so I have to get my baggage and haul it to another terminal) to Burlington, VT. I'll arrive at 11-something PM, local time. Should be warmer than yesterday: around zero degrees.

See ya there.

There have been some sever e allegations about foul play inside of ICANN with regards to the .travel sTLD allocation. Staff, counsel and the board have reviewed these allegations and I am convinced that these allegations are unfounded and have just voted in favor of .travel.

I have talked to several independent participants who are also puzzled by these allegations but I have asked them to dig around for more facts. I will report back if I find anything, but until there is some third party corroboration of these allegation, I would hope people would stop spreading this rumor as if it were fact. I understand that people don't like to give ICANN the benefit of the doubt, but these are quite severe allegations from a single source. Please be responsible.

Is Time Travel Is Possible?

Is Time Travel Is Possible? 03/15/2003 04:00 PM
There was that guy who was supposedly going to have 3rd August 2002 tatooed on his forearm instructing him to come back in time to the Empire State Building on that date should he ever gain access to time travel in his lifetime. Whatever.

What about putting a line in your will and testament to the effect that you will legally force your children to pledge that they will come back in time to meet you should they gain access to time travel in their lifetimes, and they in turn must too must force their children to make the same pledge and so on all the way down your entire line of descendants. Surely by making that pledge today you should be able to make time travel happen. If it is at all possible.

Wow, wait a minute......someone who looks a little like me dressed in an outfit made out of what looks like silver foil type fabric just appeared in my room. Wait...what?....you mean you're my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grea t grandson and you've come back to show me all about time travel? Wow! I just had a quick trip forwards in time to August this year and I blogged it!

Cool.

VPN-for-rent services are multiplying: HotSpotVPN.com is the grandpa in the field, but WiTopia.net's new personalVPN offering challenges their price and technology. In this article at Mobile Pipeline, I talk about both companies services. HotSpotVPN's recently introduced SSL VPN service competes head-to-head with personalVPN but has higher grades of encryption available at higher costs. Read the whole article for the run-down.

Travel update from UK

Travel update from UK 06/08/2004 04:24 AM

Sorry about the light blogging. Have been a bit distracted with my travels.

British Midland lost my bag on a direct flight from Naples to Heathrow. Unsure who's fault it was, but no apology (not that I expected one) from anyone. Luckily, it arrived that night.

Staying at the Park Lane Hotel on Piccadilly. Looked like a nice room at first glance, but the fax machine was broken, room safe broken (they've tried to fix it 3 times, still broken), drippy faucet, door lock broken (took 24 hours to fix), wifi in room, but a credit card based T-Mobile network with spotty coverage in my room.

The room is much better than many places I've stayed, but it would be SO MUCH better if they just had their shit together a bit more. (Maybe it's because I'm using mileage to pay for the room...)
Anyway, I expected much better from a "five star" London hotel. What a pity. I'm never going to stay at this hotel again.

On the bright side, I've gotten to meet a bunch of the UK bloggers and so far the food is MUCH BETTER than I remember it from visiting years ago.

There I listened to a number of people talk about projects they've done or have planned and I heard industry spokespeople talk about products and protocols. But the most memorable comment, to me, came from Peter F. Wilson, who is retired from the Australian Tax Office where he was charged with implementing e-business and commerce.
