Cantina Scenes (set 1) this morning at my local L.A. area K-Mart.
There appears to be four per case, as that's how many were on the

Wal-Mart sets. All in all a cool looking set that I'm sure many fans
will appreciate finally being made available at retail. Happy hunting!

Serving XML provides a pipeline language for declaratively
adapting content to XML, transforming it through a chain of
XSLT stylesheets and SAX filters, and producing a stream of
output to a local or remote destination. The accompanying
console app supports reading content as XML files, flat files,
SQL queries, or SAX events, and writing it as XML, HTML,
PDF, or mail attachments. This software is especially
suitable for converting flat files to XML, with its support for
variant record types, multi-valued fields, namespaces,
hierarchical grouping of records, row-by-row validation with
XML Schema, and much more. There is also an API for
embedding the software in a Java application.
Changes:
This release added features for date conversion, regular expression
search and replace, and more general record-to-XML mappings.

Microsoft says it's faster than Linux on
file serving
06/23/2004 12:23 PMMicrosoft continued turning up the heat on Linux with its Get The
Facts campaign last week. This time, Microsoft claimed that Windows
2003 was faster at file and print serving tasks than a Red Hat Linux
server, based on a test performed by Veritest.
The tests pitted a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server against Red
Hat Linux Enterprise Linux ES 3.0 running Samba 3.0 - a software
package that allows Linux/Unix servers to host Windows clients. The
machines were loaded onto an HP DL380 G3 with two 2.8 GHz Pentium 4
processors, 4GB of RAM and an Intel PRO/1000 MT Dual Port Gigabit
Server Adapter. Also used was a Dell PowerEdge 500SC server configured
with one 1 GHz Pentium III processor, 1GB of RAM, an onboard Intel
100M bit/sec Ethernet network adapter, and one Intel PRO/100 Fast
Ethernet NIC.
Microsoft said the results showed that the Windows server performed 46
per cent better than the HP-based Linux box, and 24 per cent better
than the Dell Linux server.

An Army officer serving in Iraq writes
07/26/2004 04:12 AMI just ran across this brilliant essay, The Military: Losing Hearts
and Minds? by Captain Oscar R. Estrada, that was published earlier
this summer in the Washington Post. I can't believe that it hasn't
been more widely circulated. It is worth reading in it entirety, but
here are a few excerpts: The General and the Colonel have told us that
we are the main effort, at the forefront of helping to rebuild Iraq.
But how do you rebuild when all around you destruction and violence
continue? Do the facts and figures showing levels of electricity
restored, the amount of drinking water available, the number of
schools reconstructed or the numbers of police officers hired and
trained really convince the Iraqi people that we are here to help? Are
we winning their hearts and minds? Winning hearts and minds is my job,
in a nutshell. I'm an Army Reserve civil affairs (CA) officer
stationed in Baqubah, 30 miles northeast of Baghdad. In Vietnam,
winning hearts and minds was mostly a Special Forces task, but after
that they were smart enough to get out of it, and the responsibility
has since fallen into the laps of reservists like me who are trained
to deal with every conceivable problem that arises when Big Army meets
Little Civilian. And that's why CA soldiers are among those most often
deployed overseas in the Reserve. ... One day last week we rolled into
the town of Zaghniyah to win some of the local hearts and minds. In a
country where most people are unemployed, we offer the townspeople $1
for every bag of trash they can collect. Our "docs" -- medics,
assistants and physicians -- set up shop in the local health clinic
and we try to "engage local leadership." ... An old man waves me off
and tells me that they know the Americans control everything and will
do so as long as they are here. The rest of the men nod in agreement.
As the day wears on, every ray of sun seems to add weight to my Kevlar
helmet and body armor. I am at a loss as to why our efforts aren't
recognized or appreciated. But then, as I look at the children
collecting trash and the main road clogged with military vehicles, as
I watch one of our docs try to help a woman carrying a gaunt and
sickly baby in...

Movie Database - Wikipedia: An interesting few paragraphs on the
history of the IMDb.
The database started out in 1990 as a collection of shell scripts
created by Col Needham which could be used to search the FAQs posted
to the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.movies.
In 1993, a centralized e-mail interface for querying the database
was created, and in 1994 this interface was extended to allow the
submission of information as well. The database then moved to a
Web-based interface, which initially ran on a network of mirrors with
donated bandwidth. In 1996, the project was incorporated in the United
Kingdom to form Internet Movie Database Ltd., and banner ads were
added to the web site.
In April 1998, the company was bought by Amazon.com, the current
owner; however, a number of the original creators, including Needham,
remained as site managers.
How many great things in the world started as shell scripts
somewhere? It's a hacker's world.
