Web Standards for Hard Times
Web Standards for Hard Times
08/13/2002 07:01 AMWeb standards? You can't afford to ignore them anymore.
Just two years ago, coding your site to the emerging guidelines from
the World Wide Web Consortium was next to impossible. After all, many
surfers were still saddled with browsers from the days when Netscape
and Microsoft deliberately built incompatible products.
But now, thanks to outspoken advocates such as the Web Standards
Project (aka WaSP) and developers who refused to choose sides, browser
makers have stopped using HTML as a weapon. Today's browser offerings
are more and more alike in their support of standards such as CSS and
XHTML. Microsoft and AOL-Time-Warner-Netscape seem to have taken their
battle to lock up consumers elsewhere. -- Paul Boltin
Jeremy Zawodny has a differ
ent take on this:
So we're getting ready to launch some redesigned stuff on Yahoo!
Finance and are taking the CSS plunge (finally). Even ignoring the
ancient Netscape 4.x browsers, it's not easy. Looking at
Galeon/Mozilla on Linux and Mozilla/IE/Opera on both XP and Mac OS X
(oh, and OmniWeb on the Mac) highlights a lot of places where they
don't agree.
"btn" Here's another funny thing. See how much of Paul Boltin's advice
is violated when you View Source on his article :-)

08/15/2004 06:21 AMLos Angeles Times - MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — At midmorning on Ocean

town, after 150,000 tourists and 30,000 natives evacuated in advance
of Hurricane Charley.

Pioneer
has announce the DVJ-X1, the first (to my knowledge) DVD-based
turntable for real-time video mixing straight from source discs. It's
got all the normal tomfoolery you'd expect from a digital turntable,
like no-tempo-loss reversals, Hot Cues (instantly recall up to three
points on the disc), and Emergency Loop functions for when you drop
the biscuit and need a quick 4 beat loop. Plus you can save all your
wave data and cue and loop points to an SD card and recall your set
later. Looks rather hot - expect to see it in an audio retailer near
you real quick like.
Be sure to check out the Video Demo, too; it looks like a blast to
play with. (Thanks, Chris!)

Big WLAN on Campus
Big WLAN on Campus
01/06/2005 03:14 PM Colleges are the bleeding edge of WLAN technology: I wrote this piece
for Mobile Pipeline (my first for them) which started out as a more
general best practices article for giant WLANs, and morphed into an
article about college WLANs. Why? As I explain in the story, giant
WLAN enterprises don't want to talk on or off the record about what
they're doing. Academic institutions are happy to oblige. Schools also
have the disadvantage of having to support many, many generations of
equipment and operating systems. You can't tell a professor to take a
flying leap, and some schools may still have five-year-old laptops and
desktops that still have to be integrated. It's clear that 802.1X is
the next big trend for both schools and enterprises. It solves many
problems while adding tremendous policy flexibility. Using 802.1X and
L2TP means that you can have smaller VLANs that are segregated by
policy, group, or even randomly to balance users among VLANs....

Pioneer Wireless Headphones

Pioneer swamped us with a
glut of wireless headphones, including the high-end E-DIR2000C which
features Dolby surround, DTS and AAC support, and a 48-bit DSP. Why
48-bits, you ask? We don't know! But numbers sure look good in
hardware reviews.
The rest of the sets are standard IR headsets that get about 29
hours (!!) of life on a few AAA batteries. They also support
12.24-Giggermunks Encoding and 9.10 Pioneer Surroundfield SussAround
for 12Mbps megaspark activity.

This is a tad late, but last week, Pioneer
announced the world's first hybrid video recorder with DVD-R DL (Dual
Layer) support. The "DVR-555H" has an estimated 80,000 yen price tag,
comes with a 250GB hard drive, and can accept image files by way of
USB for writing to DVD. Only PictBridge cameras are supported in this
fashion, though, so it won't exactly bring enough functionality to
sneeze at.
