Preparing For The Future... Or Just
Clinging To The Past?
03/31/2005 02:52 PMIt's completely natural for companies in changing marketplaces to look
for ways to protect their existing cash cows -- but it makes for a
dangerous long term strategy. Here's another example from the
newspaper industry. While not everyone agrees that
newsp
rint is going away, all of the talk about
putti
ng up pay walls for the online versions of newspapers or
keepin
g certain content only in the print edition is all about trying to
artificially boost the appeal of the paper version in relation to the
digital version. That's backwards. As new studies are showing, many
in the younger generation of today
won't take a
newsprint subscription even if it's free. Not only do they
not find it an efficient way to get and read the news, they get upset
at the growing pile of newsprint in their homes. It makes them feel
guilty for not reading it. It's a psychological barrier that free
subscriptions and exclusive content will never get over. Instead,
news organizations should be working on ways to better attract users
to their digital editions, which means providing them what they want
-- not making it harder for them to get what they want.

Survey says Apple employees optimistic
on company’s future
03/30/2005 05:20 PMApple Computer employees are optimistic on their company's future, New
York research firm Vault has found in new employee surveys on the
computer giant.
Says a former customer solutions specialist, "The business of the
company is doing great especially with the iPod and their innovative
designs. However just as any large corporation the large scale
structure, the organization gets lost at the lower levels. The
micromanagement needs to be but to a minimum and something needs to be
done to increase retention and lower the turnover rate which is
substantial."
A project manager writes, "Apple has its challenges for market share,
and will never compete directly with Dell or HP. Instead, the focus is
on creativity and the Digital Hub. Products such as the iPod are
keeping us profitable during the economic downturn. If Apple continues
to develop innovative and quality products like the iPod, then the
long term picture should be secure."
Another project manager observes, "Apple today is just like any other
conservative company. Just managed the service implementation for a
new product we will announce at MacWorld 2005. This should be a good
year for Apple but it will not reflect in my salary or any kind of
bonus I dream of receiving."
Vault's employee surveys give investors and jobseekers insight into
the company's business operations. Neither Vault nor its employee
surveys are endorsed by or affiliated with Apple Computer.
