Audio Outfitters LLC on Wednesday announced the US$24.98 ezGear ezCharge Shuffle, an auto charger for Apple's iPod shuffle. The device plugs into the cigarette lighter or accessory jack in your vehicle and helps to keep the iPod shuffle charged when you're on the road. It includes a coiled cable and a replaceable fuse, and has been molded in "iPod white." It will be available in late March.

My muscles still ache from the sähly game on Thursday but sleeping late did wonders for restoring my cognitive abilities somewhat after a week of feeling rather dull. I need to stock up on ben gay and start getting to bed before 1am. We found out on on Friday that we won't be bringing the new puppy home until the 16th of January instead of the 2nd as we had originally hoped due to the import restrictions. *sigh* The timing wrecks our holiday in Sri Lanka that was scheduled for March since it would be too soon to leave the puppy with a sitter so I guess we'll buy one of those sun lamps and pretend we're somewhere tropical instead.

I'm still getting more email from freaks in the US, the best quote from them this week was "How would you like it if we made fun of your country, tried to influence your elections? If you hate it, we love it. That is why Bush got re-elected." which amused me considering that the person couldn't have possibly read much before invading my inbox. I just can't figure out why people are doing this and I'm wondering if there are some church groups or something who are told to search the web for people who voted for Kerry and harass them since the email often comes in bunches. Bizarre.

Random thought: The bar known as Con Hombres has a sign outside that says that it's a gay bar. Aside from the name, the beefcake logo and the rainbow to drop the big hint, is the sign really necessary? I wonder if some of the clientele complained that it wasn't obvious enough or something. Perhaps piping showtunes through speakers on the sidewalk would be a more subtle calling card. :)

Janne mentioned a meme earlier in the week that, given my sleepy daze from the week, entertained me last night a lot longer than it should have. The idea was to set iTunes on shuffle and pick the first 10 songs it played. I have a lot weirder mix of musical genres than I had previously thought.

The other day, I caught up with an old friend that now works in the movie business. He was always a bit of a tech guy, but it still surprised me when he pulled out an ipod shuffle as we drove to brunch in his car. Then I noticed how he used it. It was hooked to a cassette adapter in his stereo, but he held it like a wired remote control, controlling volume and next/previous tracks while he drove, never letting go of (or having to look down at) the shuffle.

I've had a shuffle for a couple weeks and I hadn't thought to use the device in that way. For him, it was both a controller/UI and the actual music player. There seems like limitless possible other ways you could use a shuffle that no products exist for quite yet, so someone create these:

- create a bluetooth adapter that plugs into the headphone jack and transmits audio to a cassette adapter with bluetooth. Then you could just velcro the shuffle to your steering wheel or gear shift and change tracks that way. Also, a call on your bluetooth cellphone could mute/pause the player.

- create a usb slot in aftermarket car stereos to act as a dock. You could use the stereo's display as the shuffle's non-existant display and charge it at the same time. Also, add USB/dock functionality to factory stereos so owners can use their existing steering wheel stereo controls. If really want to do something cool, also add a hard drive to car stereos with shuffle docks. Then I could just add 1Gb of my music collection each time I dock it. Eventually, I could fill a 20, 40, or 80Gb hard drive that way.

- put a camera into the shuffle. I'm surprised it didn't come with a tiny 640x480 cameraphone-style attachment for the usb end, and I'm surprised no one has offered one for sale yet.

- Go higher capacity with the shuffle. I suspect in 2 or 3 years we'll laugh at the dinky 1Gb shuffles, as we pop our 8, 20, and 40Gb shuffles into our car stereos like cartridges.

I also went running with my new shuffle for the first time and was amazed by how small and light it was. I put on my earbuds, slid the shuffle under my shirt, dropped it into the back pocket of my running tights and I couldn't even feel it. Stashing my keys is a bigger problem while running than a shuffle -- that's how compact and light it is.

I've tested myself running with and without music and I tend to run farther and faster and I feel better afterwards with it, so my shuffle will be going along with me on every run. I might just velcro a house key to the back of it and kill two birds with one stone.

Interesting idea from Manuel Amador over on OSNews as to how music players could better decide the next song to play:

You see, Shuffle is very good at helping you find previously unheard songs, but it's rather bad at selecting the most appropriate song for your current mood. Shuffle can do wonders with a small list of songs, but small lists of songs means you do not get to experience songs which aren't on the playlist. This means you have to either create lists (strategy 1, anyone?), or to interrupt your business every two or three minutes, maybe seven out of ten times.

I bet you have noticed this as well. Lots of music gives you wide variety, but does not guarantee enjoyment.

The basic idea is that music players could learn that song A sounds good after song B based on whether or not you 'Next Track'ed it before it played for very long. That's something I always thought would be a great feature, but Manuel has thought it out right down to the pseudocode.

It's interesting how sometimes the design of the smallest feature of an app can make the difference between 'fantastic app' and 'ho-hum'.

It's time to go through my TechTV inbox, shuffle past the spam, and answer a few burning questions. "Chris, why did you cut your hair like that?" I had no choice; it had been burned to a crisp with the bleaching / coloring process. I could either wear the mullet wig for a month or take it off... take it ALL off. I opted for the latter. "Chris, will they let you cut your hair like this more often?" I doubt it. I've already caused our ratings to drop over 200% in the past couple of days. Of course, I was sick for two of them. Leo and Brett were great substitutes. They almost had to change the name of the show to: "I Can't Believe It's Not Pirillo!" "Chris, you look silly with a butch." Yeah, well... you look silly with a pencil shoved halfway up your nose. I can shove it in all the way if you'd like me to? "Chris, what's up with you being sick this week? Did all of those hair chemicals go to your brain?" Oranges. Oranges and graphic design. "You're not Leo." Yes, we pretty much established this two years ago. You're living in the past, man. "Chris, can I call you 'Chris'?" Sure. Just don't tell my wife. Thanks. She tends to be overprotective when it comes to people using my name. "Chris, I think you eat rainbows with your hair color." Using Google's translation engine, are we? "Chris, I think you should go over to Cat's house one night and dye her hair. And then you should go and look at the posters in her room." Uh... okay? Look, if you're not going to ask serious questions, I'm just going to stop answering them today. "Chris, don't you think the viewers would rather blah blah blah... yadda yadda yadda?" Totally. Now tune in tomorrow or I'll punch you in the nuts....

We reported on Luxpro's "Super Shuffle" around CeBIT, and it's pretty obvious why Apple is spittin' mad. It has more functionality than the iPod shuffle, yet looks exactly the same.

Apple has managed to get through to Luxpro, because Luxpro today announced the product's name has changed to the "Super Tangent." The same iPod shuffle-like frame exists, though the design of some buttons has changed. And it's available in black and red, unlike the Shuffle's "white only."

I can only imagine the scene at the New York Times a few days ago, as a team of Circuits section editors gathered around a table in a room lit by only a single lamp, shining down at the stupefying gadget known as... iPod.

Beads of sweat gathered on the brows and backfat of each one as they gazed unflinchingly at the white devil, unable to unlock its hermetic secrets; a group of men and women - elevated masters of the occult tradition of tech journalism - their minds broken and laid bare on the tiny aluminum altar that Apple had raised in their midst.

An intern slammed open the door, his silhouette framed by the light from the rest of the Gray Lady's offices, pushing a wave of nauseating synchronicity with the iPod's famous ad campaign into the room.

Like most Mac aficionados, Apple's free, bi-weekly eNews doesn't usually reveal much in the way of new information. While presenting a nice round-up of new products, promotions and events, for most of us, the e-mail newsletter mostly presents items we’ve already read and discussed (and perhaps even bought). But this week's edition taught me something. So I thought I'd share it with you. "If you're after the highest quality tunes and regularly import songs at bit rates higher than 128 Kbps, iTunes offers you the best of both worlds, letting you keep your high-quality songs in iTunes while exporting leaner versions of the songs, sized just right for iPod shuffle." Basically, iTunes will re-encode songs specifically for the shuffle, making the allotted 240 songs fit. According to Playlist magazine, however, this takes about a minute per track, or 4 hours for a full shuffle. But it got me thinking. If Apple can make iTunes communicate with one of its iPods in such a way, why not expand that on-the-fly concept? Why not hook up with CNN or BBC to offer new a compressed download of news and sports clips, akin to reading the morning paper on the subway? Or partner with MTV to provide slideshows of the latest music videos? Or, for the umteenth time, subscriptions? With the release of the shuffle, the idea of the iPod has been taken in a new direction, and the focus lies solely on the enjoyment of music — at any time, in any order, and without any distracting menus or games. So if it’s simply about random listening with an emphasis on variation, does it matter if the songs are bought? (If you're thinking to yourself, "Haven’t I read this before?" you’re absolutely correct. But in a week where the biggest Apple news came from Sony, filling a pair of vacancies in the "Features" section is no easy task.) So let's talk Sony. This week, the once-dominant music giant announced a line of flash players aimed squarely at Apple's shuffle, which watched its own portable player monopoly slip through its hands. For one, they support MP3, rather than Sony's own difficult Atrac. It has a LED which appears to float text over the an iPod mini-like blueish body. It boasts a whopping 50 hours of playback on a single charge. And while the model in question is priced a bit higher than the shuffle, an extra $50 will buy an FM tuner, one of the iPod's more sought-after features. Apple's stock dropped this week on the news, and it certainly seems that at least one company has caught up to Apple's technology — and that’s the fear. And it's a valid one. Price aside, Sony’s flash memory player is a better shuffle. And it's hard to argue 50 hours of playback. So what's Apple to do? Will it stick to its stubborn ways and shirk what people are clamoring for — subscriptions, better battery life, an FM tuner, a small display — and let Sony and Creative and Dell and Napster chip away at its market dominance until all that's left is a small, loyal group of users with a vague recollection that somewhere along the line, everyone else lost their way...? Or will Apple learn from its competition, for a change?
