New Xbox may work with iPod, portable
game systems
06/22/2005 01:54 AM

Microsoft has developed technology to allow the forthcoming Xbox 360 to be connected online with portable game systems of rival firms and Apple's iPod, according to company statements made last week. According to TechNewsWorld, Microsoft officials said users of the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the Nintendo DS will be able to connect their machines with the Xbox 360 and play Microsoft's games over the Internet. All three companies plan to equip their next-generation game consoles with advanced Internet connection functions. The report also says Microsoft is considering making Xbox 360 connectable with Apple's iPod portable digital music player. The Xbox 360 is expected out later this year.

More loose science Google mining today, starting with a sampling of the five major next generation portable gaming systems. I'm a little surprised -- the Nintendo DS comes out on top, even over the Sony PSP. My guess is science is failing us here, as another query for "playstation portable" pulls up another 666,000 hits (oooweeoooh), which added to the to the "sony psp" results brings us up to 1,425,000, or about 200k over Nintendo. My guess is it's somewhere in between those numbers and it's fair to say the Nintendo DS and the PSP are, buzz-wise, in a dead heat. The Nokia N-Gage QD makes a sizeable showing, which is pretty respectable until you run just "n-gage," which nets a response of over 4 million. Since we're trying to compare next generation unreleased and just-released hardware, though, I left those results out. The Gizm(welovepigs)ondo is just a blip on the radar, in part because of the recent name change, and in part because it is doomed to failure. The Tapwave Zodiac does fare any better, which is a bit disappointing. Time to rally the troops, Tapwave.

The next Google Buzz Index, where we see which of the possible names for the second iteration of Microsoft's Xbox have the highest buzz, is after the jump.

XBox 2 Peripherals To Work on PCs

XBox 2 Peripherals To Work on PCs 09/23/2004 05:46 PM

Gamespot has a pretty informative interview with one of Microsoft's XNA strategists (Dean Lester, the Windows Gaming general manager, in fact), and while there's lots of goobledegook about giving "Level" ratings to PCs to determine what sort of games they are capable of playing ("I had a Level 5 machine, but the new video card puts me firmly in 6.4 territory, although since I traded in my aluminum case for one with better armor class, my encumbrance drops my THAC0 to...") there's also some juicy bits about the Xbox 2 in there, as well, including work that Microsoft plans for all Xbox 2 peripherals to work on PCs, as well. Either than means all PCs are getting an Xbox add-in card, or we're pretty looking at something like USB (the existing Xbox controllers are essentially USB already, in fact).

This had already been happening to some extent on consoles already. Many USB peripherals like steering wheels work fine on a PC or Playstation 2 (which has proper USB ports), but it will be nice if this is embraced by the manufacturers instead of given an occasional nod.

Another Portable NES: Game Axe

Another Portable NES: Game Axe 08/16/2004 12:41 PM

gameaxe_image002.jpg imageSo apparently that Pockefami portable NES machine we were talking about is far from the first portable NES player. In fact, the GameAxe, from Taiwanese grey market manufacturer Redant was created way back in '95. Although never released in the US for obvious reasons, the GameAxe is essentially an NES in portable form, with a 3.8-inch LCD screen and a screaming 1.8MHz 8-bit CPU. They fetch high dollars, though, from retro freaks; this one on eBay is probably going to go for well over $200.

There was another portable unit that could play NES carts, as well, called the "Top Guy." It reportedly had a general suck to it, but it did have one cool feature: an FCC-be-damned low-power VHF transmitter that made any TV within a few feet display the game you were playing. (Thanks, Myron!)
