World Events Database
08/10/2004 05:43 PMHere's something they need to add to Wikipedia: a world events
database. So many notable things happen in the world from day-to-day
that it'd be nice to have a database of them, a running record, a
blog, if you will.
Wikipedia has yearly and daily entries, like Laci
Peterson murder trial (actually, I don't need to know this,
because my wife is glued to CourtTV and keeps me updated whether I
like it or not, but it's an example...). With a flat database table
and a good keywording system, I could look these all up and connect to
the related Wikipedia entries.

The best thing about
Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird:
Some Instructions on Writing &
Life is, even when the thought of sitting down and writing is
about as appealing to you as root canal work, she inspires you to
want
to write. That alone is worth the investment. The book is full of
mostly well-established wisdom about the art of writing, but it's
written intelligently and with great humour and passion. She really
practices what she preaches.
She takes you through the standard rules: Write every day at the same
time, always write something each day, no matter how brief, or how
hard
it is; break the job into manageable tasks ("take it bird by bird");
start with short assignments and "shitty first drafts" that just get
everything down, and edit later; avoid perfectionism; write about what
you know; use your own authentic voice and style; use index cards as
reminders, phone friends and experts to
get background material you need quickly and authentically, and use
writing groups and trusted readers to keep you going and honest. She
explains how to deal with writer's block, agents, publishers, and
jealousy of other (successful but clearly inferior) writers.
What I liked best about the book were some of the humbler, lesser
known rules of good writing:
- Stories tell themselves through you, so it's critical to
find means to silence the noise in your head and let them come
out
- Flawed, hopeful narrators are great voices, and points of
view, from which to tell your story
- Plot need be nothing more
than the discovery of what each of your characters cares about,
revealed vividly and continuously
- Characters must show
strength or courage to be sympathetic
- Dialogue must be
authentic and individual, yet concise and fast-moving
- Good
writers must be observant, reverent, and even startled by life and its lessons
- Great stories
are about great truths, things the writer
cares passionately about that come out in the writing: "To be a good
writer you not only have to write a great deal, but you have to
care."
- You must trust yourself and your intuition, especially
with first drafts, not self-criticize and second guess every
step
- You have to give the best you have always, not save it up
for the next story
- Writers have a duty to the reader to be
honest, to make
things clearer, to help heal readers' "gaping wounds and dazed
expressions", to soothe
The book includes an extraordinary 2-page story by the author
that
illustrates these and other points: It is charming, heartbreaking,
full
of surprises, imbued with the author's great love for two very special
characters, imbued as well with a bit of wonderful, spare, dialogue,
some stunning imagery and an improbable analogy. But mostly, the story
moves, and in so doing it
takes the reader along for the ride.
Until you can read Bird by
Bird for yourself, here are two quotes by other accomplished
writers about the art of writing:
"The greatest writing is done on the edge of what you know and what
you
don't know."
-- Beth Nielsen Chapman
"The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can
think."
-- Edwin Schlossberg

Manufacturers and consumers alike have been unable to examine the

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AMOne of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales
mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell
became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq
started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out -
and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book
publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized
that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site,
it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's
pissing off retailers, who don't
want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers
say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to
the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it
becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's
also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer
experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online
sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy
am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

09/14/2004 03:51 AMShelley of BurningBird is broke and needs a little help paying the

earliest weblog writers, and she has a distinctive, original and
beautiful writing voice. She catches a lot of flack because she is
often the one to turn over the rock that everyone would rather leave
lying there, revealing a truth that people don't want to see. Truth be
told, she probably also catches flack because she can be a bit cranky
at times, but she only turns her rhetorical guns against powerful
people, and she is incredibly generous with her time and expertise.

Times piece compares Amazon.com with Napster. Huh?
The odd logic is that used books sold online are cutting into sales of
new books, which may or may not be true. But the Napster comparison is
ludicrous for some obvious reasons, including the fact that an actual
book is not a digitized song, and that if I'm holding a specific book
you are not holding the same copy.
The Times piece is about the "doctrine of first sale," which basically
says that once a work is sold, it's gone from the creator's control.
The purchaser of the item can resell it, give it away or throw it in
the garbage, if that's what he wants to do.
Copyright holders have never liked this very much, and I can
sympathize. Visual artists who see escalating prices for works they
sold at bargain when they were starting out tend to really not like
this situation. But the doctrine of first sale is vastly better than
the alternative.
The idea that the copyright owner should get a cut every time a book
changes hands is a Pandora's box. It's also just what copyright
industry would like to see happen, and that's what the entertainment
industry is trying to create with its various digital restrictions
technologies.
The industry wants a pay-per-use world of arts and letters. Resist.
And let's please not equate selling a used book with copyright
infringement.
