Interesting
dissection of US energy/environmental politics and policy along
conservative/liberal lines:
"We are, it seems, always in
some kind of energy crisis, real or imagined. Some worry that our
major sources of energy are about to run out. Some despair that our
energy-hungry civilization is destroying the natural world. Some
believe our quest for energy is driving us into unnecessary wars and
unsavory alliances. And some lament that excessive regulations on
energy development are crippling the American way of life. When it
comes to energy politics, there is no shortage of alarmism,
conservative and liberal alike." The conclusion was sorta
weak tho, I thought :D [via

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory: Energy Crossroads http
://eetd.lbl.gov/EnergyCrossroads/EnergyCrossroads.html As temperatures rise this summer and people turn on their air
conditioners, the stakeholders in the electricity supply system worry
about system overload. To help prevent overload, people can use less
by conserving energy or find more efficient ways to use the energy
they do. As researchers develop new technologies, and industry tries
to promote those technologies, policy advocates look at long-term
projections. This Topic in Depth explores the energy crisis and
reviews some of the current technologies and energy-saving resources.
This first site from the U.S. Department of Energy (1)
offers an overview of some of the key issues surrounding current
discussions of energy: "reducing America's dependence on foreign oil
and developing energy efficient technologies for buildings, homes,
transportation, power systems and industry." Given that any technology
developed to make our energy-using appliances more efficient requires
consumers' purchase and use of these new technologies, it makes sense
that some industry stakeholders, such as Pacific Gas and Electric (2)
describes the smart energy technology being developed by researchers
at UC Berkeley's Center for Information Technology Research in the
Interest of Society (CITIRS) that will monitor household energy usage
so people know what energy they are using. Meanwhile, other
researchers continue to pursue renewable energy technologies, such as
those highlighted on this website from the Center for Renewable Energy
and Sustainable Technology (4). This website (5) describes an
initiative by EPRI to collaborate with various stakeholders to develop
an Electricity Technology Roadmap for the next 25 years. This website
from the Smithsonian (6) describes a project "to document the story of
electrical power restructuring in North America as it unfolds over the
coming years," offering electricity basics, a history of energy
science and usage, an overview of deregulation, and an image gallery.
Finally, this website from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (7)
serves as an all-around resource on research, policy and other
resources. [From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and

BoingBoing reader
George W.
Maschke says,
Saving Energy Without Derision (5 mb PDF) is a new (and free) e-book
by former Sandia National Laboratories senior scientist Dr. Alan P. Zelicoff. This book is
intended to be a real-world, no-nonsense, thoroughly documented
collection of easy-to-implement recommendations to help the average
thoughtful person to pick the "low-hanging fruit" of conservation and
renewable energy. The author is after the easy 75% of actions we can
all take (but almost uniformly ignore) that most certainly make a
difference in energy costs (after all that's what most people care
about) and adjuring a bit of unnecessary adverse impact on the
environment (which a few folks actually think is important beyond the
mere dollar valuation).
The author (who welcomes comments at zalan8587@qwest.net) intends to
continuously update the book (consistent with readership interest) and
address many new topics. For example, next on his list is an analysis
of the economics and scientific basis of fuel-cell vehicles powered by
hydrogen. (Bottom line, he maintains, is that it's a cruel hoax and
energy disaster, and far less useful than, for example, heavy hybrid
automobiles that get about 50 - 60 miles on an electric charge alone
-- which accounts for more than 85% of driving in the US and elsewhere
on a daily basis -- and which are available now.)
