DealBITS Drawing: Matias OS X Keyboard Winners -- Congratulations to Joe Benenati of cox.net, Jan Ferrera of yahoo.com, Glenn Zieman of wi.rr.com, Eric Frampton of ericframpton.com, Don Andrews of mac.com, David Dunham of pensee.com, Amy Kvochick of kvochick.com, and Jean Ohlde of yahoo.com, whose entries were chosen randomly from 1,296 valid entries in last week's DealBITS drawing and who each will receive an OS X Keyboard from Matias, worth $29.95. In addition, our last two winners were referred to DealBITS, so Andrew Kvochick of yahoo.com and Robert Ohlde of macconnect.com will also receive a keyboard. Keep an eye out for future DealBITS drawings, and remember that telling your friends, family, and colleagues about new drawings is a great way to increase your chances of receiving a prize; nearly 10 percent of our entries this time came from people who learned about DealBITS from a friend. DealBITS Drawing: Matias OS X Keyboard

DealBITS Drawing: Matias OS X Keyboard 06/17/2005 05:46 PM
Adam C. Engst (~410 words)

A little over a year ago, I reviewed the Matias Tactile Pro keyboard, which uses Alps mechanical switches to provide a "clicky" feel that many people, myself included, really like. Now Matias has a new keyboard - the OS X Keyboard - that addresses two common complaints with the Tactile Pro. First, the Tactile Pro is relatively expensive at $99.95, whereas the OS X Keyboard costs only $29.95. Second, the Tactile Pro is rather loud thanks to those clicky keys, and some people (or their office-mates) find the noise annoying. In contrast, the OS X Keyboard, short of occasional clicks from its Spacebar, is far quieter. The OS X Keyboard also hides the seldom-used Caps Lock key down in the cluster of modifier keys to the right of the Spacebar (replacing it with a Control key above Shift), prints the appropriate symbols on the modifier keys in addition to the Option characters on all alphanumeric keys, and arranges the three volume keys (mute, up, down) in a line between the Help/Home/Pg Up row and F13/F14/F15. But (there's always a "but," isn't there?), the OS X Keyboard uses rubber dome switches instead of Alps mechanical switches, and as such, doesn't have nearly as nice a feel as the Tactile Pro. It's comparable to the Apple Pro Keyboard, other than a somewhat looser Spacebar. In terms of construction, it's white plastic, and is quite light; it doesn't have the tank-like feel of the Tactile Pro. Overall, the OS X Keyboard hasn't rocked my world, but it seems to be a decent, inexpensive keyboard that might be a good choice for anyone buying a Mac mini or looking for a backup or replacement keyboard.

About a year ago, in one of our earliest DealBITS drawings, we gave away a few copies of SmileOnMyMac's PDFpen software, which enables you to manipulate PDF files in a variety of ways. SmileOnMyMac has now updated PDFpen to version 2 and released PDFpenPro, which builds upon PDFpen by enabling you to create interactive PDF forms. Both programs let you merge PDFs, rearrange and delete pages, add text (for filling in non-interactive forms) and graphics (such as signatures), and more. PDFpen 2 improves the program's performance and adds the extremely useful capability of searching for, selecting, and copying text from PDF documents. Macworld gave PDFpen 4 mice in a recent review.

DealBITS Drawing: MaxSleeve and iProtect

DealBITS Drawing: MaxSleeve and iProtect 04/18/2005 06:45 PM
Adam C. Engst (~360 words)

My main laptop bag holds so much that I'm tempted to pack a lot more than I need much of the time, and the end result is that my svelte little 12-inch PowerBook G4 ends up being only a fraction of the overall weight I carry. For an outing where I don't want all my gear, or, in fact, anything but the laptop itself, I've just started using a MaxSleeve from MaxUpgrades. It's a sleek black bag made of a dense polyurethane foam, and my PowerBook fits snugly inside. A pair of zippers enable you to close it, and the zippers are on the outside so they never come in contact with the surface of the PowerBook. MaxUpgrades also sent me their iProtect cloth, which is a microfiber cloth you can use to prevent finger oils on your keycaps from marring the LCD screen surface when your laptop is closed; it's also designed to clean sensitive LCD screens without scratching.

In the early days of the Web, we saw the rise of simple graphical HTML editors like Claris HomePage, Symantec's Visual Page, and Adobe's PageMill. Those applications defined a useful niche between the text-only HTML editors like BBEdit (still preferred by many) and the powerful (and expensive) Web authoring tools like Adobe GoLive and Macromedia Dreamweaver. Useful and obvious though that niche may have been, all those early programs died off, leaving many people using programs with which they were uncomfortable. A few low-end Web authoring tools have popped up over the years, but none has become as well-known as those first programs.
