FeedDemon Selected for TechWeb
Pipeline's Hall of Fame
06/17/2005 07:17 PM

Just found out via a FeedDemon watch that FeedDemon is listed alongside Gmail, MovableType, Mac OS X, ICQ and Dreamweaver in TechWeb Pipeline's Software Hall of Fame. Here's a snippet from the article:

"When I first tried downloading RSS feeds, I found the process to be something that sounded like a good idea, but was a lot more trouble than it was worth. However, all that changed when I started using FeedDemon. This is a great tool for organizing, reading, and filing data from lots of Web sites. If you don't use FeedDemon, you're wasting heaps of time...On other news aggregators, things just seem to take more mouse-movements and clicks than they do with FeedDemon."

If you have a favorite application that didn't make the list, you can submit it to TechWeb's Call-'Em-Like-You-See-'Em Contest for a chance to win some nice prizes (including a 30GB iPod photo).

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

Macworld's 2003 Game Hall of Fame

Macworld's 2003 Game Hall of Fame 12/24/2003 03:47 PM
nce again, it's time to roll out the red carpet at the Macworld Game Hall of Fame and honor the year's best pulse-quickening, mind-tingling games. For those of you who haven't made the pilgrimage to these hallowed halls, the Game Hall of Fame is located in historic Pittsfield, Massachusetts, a few hours away from my homestead on Cape Cod. Thank goodness the management lets me telecommute most days (the three-hour drive up the Mass Pike is a killer). As I walk through the halls, polishing fingerprints off of the brass statues of past inductees and making room for the newest crop of winners, I can't help but look back on the past year with fondness. Sure, there were a few titles that made me want to give up my joystick forever -- I won't name any names. But after all was said and done, 2003 shaped up to be another solid year for games on the Mac. From old-school arcade games to futuristic shooters, zoo management to covert military operations, there was truly something for everyone.

ANN: FeedDemon 1.10

ANN: FeedDemon 1.10 06/07/2004 05:42 AM

I'm pleased to announce the final release of FeedDemon 1.10. Among the highlights in this new release are:

  • Support for Atom feeds
  • A new integrated web search
  • The ability to search previously downloaded feed items
  • Improved browser features such as popup blocking and form auto-completion
  • Enhanced grouping and styling of feed items

In addition to these "big" new features, version 1.10 offers a lot of smaller tweaks that really boost FeedDemon's usability. A complete list of what's new can be found in the release notes, but be sure to watch the FeedDemon Tips blog over the next week since we'll be highlighting a number of new features that you might overlook.

If you already own FeedDemon 1.0, the upgrade to version 1.10 is free - just download the new trial version and install it on top of the previous version, and you're set to go. Your serial number, channel subscriptions and other information will all be retained.

My thanks and appreciation go to everyone who not only tested FeedDemon, but also stuck with me during that nasty little episode with the neck surgery. A couple months back I had no idea when I'd be able to get FeedDemon 1.10 out the door, so I'm really glad to announce that it's done :)

PS: If you have any questions about the new release, please visit the web-based forums for help. I'll also be updating the FeedDemon FAQ over the next few days to address common questions about 1.10.

ANN: FeedDemon 1.5 RC2 02/01/2005 08:43 PM

FeedDemon 1.5 RC2 is now available. Be sure to check out the releas e notes to find out what's new. As always, RC2 should be installed directly on top of your existing version.

If you run into any problems using this pre-release, please let me know by posting in the FeedDem on 1.5 Beta Forum.

FeedDemon 1.10 RC5

FeedDemon 1.10 RC5 05/31/2004 12:35 PM

Okay, I lied about RC4 being the last FeedDemon 1.10 pre-release :) Out of necessity, I'm making one last pre-release available. RC5 contains a number of fixes related to how Japanese characters are displayed, and it also includes a new "Web Search" feature along with support for IE's form auto-completion.

If you encounter a bug in RC5, let me know by posting in the FeedDemon Support Forum. Please include 1.10RC5 in the subject line of any message you post about this pre-release.

Note: Translators, I apologize for yet another change, but there are two new strings in this release. If you'd prefer not to send me new FDLANGs, please feel free to simply email me the translations for the strings shown below.

FeedDemon and authenticated feeds

FeedDemon and authenticated feeds 02/10/2004 02:47 AM

Several FeedDemon users have expressed concerns about the Microsoft security update which removes support for user names and passwords in URLs, and I'd like to alleviate those worries.

If you subscribe to any authenticated feeds, it's not necessary to include the user name and password in the feed's URL in order to view it in FeedDemon. This was the case with early beta versions of FeedDemon 1.0, but this was no longer necessary by the final release of 1.0.

The first time FeedDemon connects to an authenticated feed, you'll be prompted for your user name and password. This login information is retained during the current session of FeedDemon, but as is the case with Internet Explorer, you'll be asked to login again the next time you run FeedDemon. If you find it annoying to have to fill in your user name and password again, just select "Remember my password" and your login will be filled in automatically.

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension
09/20/2004 10:22 AM

When Firefox add ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to choose an external RSS reader.

So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.

Michael Koziarski rose to the challenge and created F eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed: // protocol. Which means that even though the extension was designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon. Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the Mac.

Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR" icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon. Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel" wizard to subscribe to it.

Details on Feed Your Reader are h ere, and the project page is here. If you're viewing this in Firefox, the download link to the XPI (extension) is here .

Double Authenticated Logins a smart move

09/21/2004 05:12 AM

In a move that will prove popular to those worried about identity theft or simply keeping their accounts secure AOL has introduced a dual authentication login.

"Subscribers get a matchbook-size device from RSA Security Inc. displaying a six-digit code that changes every minute. The code is necessary to log on, so a scammer who guesses or steals a password cannot access the account without the device in hand."

I have seen these things in action before and wish my bank and some of the services I access on the net had the added security feature. I would happily pay the monthly surcharge. [Goupstate.com]

Podcast sf novel

Podcast sf novel 04/04/2005 06:25 PM
Cory Doctorow: Brian sez,
Earthcore is the first-ever podcast novel. From the site: "EarthCore is the world's first podcast-only novel: you can't find it in stores, you can't download the full audio, and the only way to find out what happens is to subscribe to the podcast. This novel is a cross between episodic modern-action fare like "24" and classic sci-fi movies like Predator and Starship Troopers."

So far, the prologue and the first five chapters have been released and my wife and I are hooked. Even if you aren't into podcasts, it's still a free (and very good) audiobook!

I just listened to the prologue and it's pretty good -- if I was twiddling the dial looking for something cool on the radio, I'd stop and listen to this. Link (Thanks, Brian!)

At MLS, we've decided to podcast Ste phen Abrams' presentation on the 22nd, but we don't really have a suitable, portable setup to grab the audio. We'd like to start doing more podcasts in general, so can anyone recommend an inexpensive, portable setup for optimal capture of sound from someone who is speaking to an audience? I know at worst we could set up a second microphone attached to an MP3 player, but I'd like to hear other thoughts on the subject. TIA!

The Perfect Podcast for Librarians

The Perfect Podcast for Librarians 06/17/2005 07:16 PM

(other than Greg’s podcasts, of course!) - it’s Who said? A Literature Game!

What it is: an audio literature trivia game, delivered as a podcast, if you want it that way.

Every other day or so, I'll make an audio recording from a novel. It will be short passage, always something a character says. Your task will be to guess the character, book and author.

Two ways to play: on the web site, and as a podcast. We are experimenting with the process a little.

  1. All on the web site:  Go here, listen to the clip, then submit your guess using this form.
  2. As a podcast:  If you are set up to receive podcasts you can listen via the RSS feed, then submit your answers via the guessing form.

I'll post hints on the discussion forums.”

I’m also very much enjoying the Make podcasts, along with Greg’s, of course. Sadly, no MLS libraries have subscribed to Make: Technology on Your Time, which makes me think they just don’t know about it. If your library “just doesn’t know about it,” check it out, because it’s a pretty unique title and I’ll bet you’ve got an audience for it. I follow along at home via the blog, podcasts , del.icio.us links, and Flickr pool.
