The Empty Cradle: global population
decline
06/06/2004 05:42 PM
The
Empty Cradle. Our everyday personal experiences with traffic,
sprawl and other irritants of modern life tell us there are too many
people in the world and the problem is getting worse. However in truth
world population growth
peaked 40 years
ago in 1963 and has been trending downward since. Demographers
predict that absolute human population will peak at
9 billion by
2070 and then contract. Long before then, many
nations will shrink in
absolute size and the
av
erage age of the world's citizens will
shoot up dramatically, including the fastest aging part of the
world:
developing countries, where for example Iraq is aging
2.5 times faster than the USA and Mexico 5 times as fast. Having
averted the danger of overpopulation, the world now faces the opposite
problem: an aging and declining population.

02/01/2005 10:09 PMI had to go all the way over to LISNews<
/a> to find out that a sister Library System here in Illinois has
started a totally awesome project called Libraries Matter. Here at home,
our kids saved up some money to buy the 10–pack of Lance
Armstrong yellow wristbands because they’re all the rage at
school. Can you imagine if we could start something similar with these
blue ones for libraries? Brilliant job, Alliance Library
System!
One thing, though – how about offering packs
smaller than 50 so that ordinary folks like myself can buy some and
give them out to friends, kids, etc.? Let’s get some grassroots
support going, not just top down from the institutional level! Then,
let’s think about how we can use these on Advocacy Day this
year.
Tangent: When visiting the ALS web site tonight,
I realized they’ve added blogs to the home page (kind of, sort
of). Sweet! Unfortunately, no RSS feeds to be found anywhere, which
means I won’t be able to add them to my aggregator, which means
I’ll have to keep relying on other web sites to highlight ALS
projects for me. Not sweet. C’mon, ALS, show us the RSS!

White men bad; white dogs worse
White men bad; white dogs worse
04/05/2005 09:24 AMWe spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with an
anthropologist friend who has two 3-year-old bitches (Lab and
Husky) and 4 acres of land on which Alex and Sammy
could play with them. One of the nice things about colleges
located in areas where real estate is cheap is that the professors
live close to the campus and are available to students for informal
dinners and shared extracurricular activities. Thus over the
weekend we encountered a few other Gettysburg College
professors. I asked one of them whether faculty could bring
their dogs to work. She replied "The college's Affirmative
Action lawyer, before she left, made up a lot of new rules. One
of them was that junior and senior faculty could not sleep
together. Another was to ban dogs in the buildings."
This is a good measure of how desperate PhDs are for jobs as
college professors. The college pays lower salaries, to people
of the same age, as the public high school down the street. The
high school teachers were able to go to work at age 22 without
suffering through a long period of starvation wages as graduate
assistants. The high school teachers are union members who ever
have to worry about losing their job, compared to the college
professors who live for 7 years in fear of being tossed out as a
middle-aged has-been ("denied tenure" is the polite term for this
event). And now these poor souls are expected to get through
their day without a dog at their side and without the possibility of
an interlude with a more senior professor.
[Note to parents: if you want to know why tuition prices have
risen so fast, consider that a very small liberal arts school was
paying a full-time lawyer to work on affirmative action; Walmart has a
"Chief Diversity Officer" but they had $billions in revenue over which
to spread the cost.]

« I've always wanted a discoball for the livingroom.... »
My muscles still ache from the sähly game on Thursday but sleeping
late did wonders for restoring my cognitive abilities somewhat after a
week of feeling rather dull. I need to stock up on ben gay and start
getting to bed before 1am. We found out on on Friday that we won't be
bringing the new puppy home until the 16th of January instead of the
2nd as we had originally hoped due to the import restrictions. *sigh*
The timing wrecks our holiday in Sri Lanka that was scheduled for
March since it would be too soon to leave the puppy with a sitter so I
guess we'll buy one of those sun lamps and pretend we're somewhere
tropical instead.
I'm still getting more email from freaks in the US, the best quote
from them this week was "How would you like it if we made fun of your
country, tried to influence your elections? If you hate it, we love
it. That is why Bush got re-elected." which amused me considering that
the person couldn't have possibly read much before invading my inbox.
I just can't figure out why people are doing this and I'm wondering if
there are some church groups or something who are told to search the
web for people who voted for Kerry and harass them since the email
often comes in bunches. Bizarre.
Random linkage: Photomo's Egypt
series is really well done and Finnish Nature
Photos for the look of Finland outside the cities.
Random thought: The bar known as Con Hombres has a sign outside that
says that it's a gay bar. Aside from the name, the beefcake logo and
the rainbow to drop the big hint, is the sign really necessary? I
wonder if some of the clientele complained that it wasn't obvious
enough or something. Perhaps piping showtunes through speakers on the
sidewalk would be a more subtle calling card. :)
Janne mentioned a meme earlier in the week that, given my
sleepy daze from the week, entertained me last night a lot longer than
it should have. The idea was to set iTunes on shuffle and pick the
first 10 songs it played. I have a lot weirder mix of musical genres
than I had previously thought.

Shuffle me up some products
Shuffle me up some products
04/04/2005 03:58 AMThe other day, I caught up with an old friend that now works in the
movie business. He was always a bit of a tech guy, but it still
surprised me when he pulled out an ipod shuffle as we drove to brunch
in his car. Then I noticed how he used it. It was hooked to a cassette
adapter in his stereo, but he held it like a wired remote control,
controlling volume and next/previous tracks while he drove, never
letting go of (or having to look down at) the shuffle.
I've had a shuffle for a couple weeks and I hadn't thought to use
the device in that way. For him, it was both a controller/UI and the
actual music player. There seems like limitless possible other ways
you could use a shuffle that no products exist for quite yet, so
someone create these:
- create a bluetooth adapter that plugs into the headphone jack and
transmits audio to a cassette adapter with bluetooth. Then you could
just velcro the shuffle to your steering wheel or gear shift and
change tracks that way. Also, a call on your bluetooth cellphone could
mute/pause the player.
- create a usb slot in aftermarket car stereos to act as a dock.
You could use the stereo's display as the shuffle's non-existant
display and charge it at the same time. Also, add USB/dock
functionality to factory stereos so owners can use their existing
steering wheel stereo controls. If really want to do something cool,
also add a hard drive to car stereos with shuffle docks. Then I could
just add 1Gb of my music collection each time I dock it. Eventually, I
could fill a 20, 40, or 80Gb hard drive that way.
- put a camera into the shuffle. I'm surprised it didn't come with
a tiny 640x480 cameraphone-style attachment for the usb end, and I'm
surprised no one has offered one for sale yet.
- Go higher capacity with the shuffle. I suspect in 2 or 3 years
we'll laugh at the dinky 1Gb shuffles, as we pop our 8, 20, and 40Gb
shuffles into our car stereos like cartridges.
I also went running with my new shuffle for the first time and was
amazed by how small and light it was. I put on my earbuds, slid the
shuffle under my shirt, dropped it into the back pocket of my running
tights and I couldn't even feel it. Stashing my keys is a bigger
problem while running than a shuffle -- that's how compact and light
it is.
I've tested myself running with and without music and I tend to run
farther and faster and I feel better afterwards with it, so my shuffle
will be going along with me on every run. I might just velcro a house
key to the back of it and kill two birds with one stone.
