stored in both the DVD and high-capacity Blu-ray Disc formats. They
are the first discs that are able to contain data in both formats, a
company spokesperson says. The discs contain three layers. The upper
layer is a Blu-ray Disc layer with a capacity of 25GB. Below are two
DVD layers with a combined capacity of 8.5GB, JVC says.
The company has not decided yet when the technology will be
commercialized but JVC may produce the discs, says company
spokesperson Fusako Adachi.

I back up my computers to hard drives
using about a terabyte of storage (500 GB in each set). But these sets
are incremental and rotate. I don't keep any permanent copies, just
two separate aging sets. I also like to have some storage that isn't
rewritable, and the new dual-layer DVD writers that have come on the
market can put about 8.5 GB on a single disc. It seemed like the way
to go for the best trade-off on cost, permanence, and sheer capacity.
The thought of burning lots of cheap CDs reminded me of those
automated floppy disk loaders of yesteryear.

11/19/2003 01:40 AMJust to make this whole mess over which standard will succeed the DVD,
a Chinese business consortium and two Chinese DVD manufacturers are
rolling out the Enhanced Versatile Disc, or EVD. The idea is to have a
homegrown standard to avoid paying royalties to non-Chinese
electronics congolomerates that developed the DVD. Which certainly
makes some economic sense if you're a manufacturer, but why a consumer
would choose an EVD player over a DVD player is somewhat less clear.
EVD players are going to have to be a lot cheaper to convince people
that they're not just better off buying a DVD player. Read [Thanks,

Advances being made in holographic

Advances being made in holographic
storage technology
02/05/2005 10:10 PMAlthough Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD technologies have yet to reach the
mainstream, progress is being made toward a more advanced holographic
technology that may one day replace them.
Japan's Optware Corp. earlier this week announced plans toward
commercialization of its Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) technology.
According to Computerworld, Optware Corp. said that it has set up an
alliance to promote its HVD and that later this year will set up an
office in the U.S. to promote the technology with major systems
integrators there.
HVD technology involves the use of a laser to store information on
discs like CDs and DVDs. Instead of recording data in dots on the
disc, beams of light interfere with each other, forming patterns
within the HVD disc. U.S.-based InPhase Technologies Inc. is also
trying to bring holographic storage drives to market in 2006.
Researchers at IBM's Almaden Research Center are also developing
holographic storage devices.
Optware claims that the technology enables the storage of up to 3.9TB
of information on a single disc. The company is initially
commercializing 200GB recordable and 100GB read-only discs, it said.
Data archiving for the U.S. health care industry is an early potential
market, he said. As hospitals archive increasingly large data files
such as digital X-rays and CAT scans, and increasingly make use of
video images, the demand for increased storage capacity will grow.
This year and next, the company will be preparing to submit three HVD
storage media to the International Standards Organization. The 200GB
disc and a 30GB credit card-size storage format may be approved by the
ISO by the end of December 2006, while the 100GB read-only disc may
approved in June 2007, Aoki said.
