Adam C. Engst (~80 words)

Adam Interviewed for CIPS Connections/NPA Careers -- A while back a guy named Stephen Ibaraki interviewed me via email, and the interview has now been published by CIPS (Canadian Information Processing Society) Connections and the NPA (Network Professional Association) Careers sites. It's an extensive interview and worth a read. The text is the same on both sites; I include them both here merely for completeness. [ACE]

MATT GALLANT -- Developer Climax would very much like you to know that there is more than one MMORPG on the way that starts with "War", so they've released information concerning their adaptation of the moneygrubbing-est tabletop wargame ever, Warhammer 40K.

The latest information concerns the careers players will be able to start off in on their quest to do whatever. There are eight in all, and as the player advances, there will be over seventy career options. In case you were wondering from the above image, none of these eight beginning options is "line dancer". That's just a test of how the helmets fit, or at least that's all it appears to be.

Two careers, two kids, plenty of time

Two careers, two kids, plenty of time 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

A Panamanian-American couple invited me over to dinner at their house the other night.  They are both well-educated and have excellent careers.  Their girls are 8 and 9.  I walked in the door to find an impeccably neat household.  No toys cluttering the floor.  Both husband and wife were relaxed and happy to chat.  Eventually an excellent meal appeared, cooked and served by one of two live-in nannies.  The dishes disappeared and the kids came into the room to hang out with the parents.

By dessert I'd figured out what was wrong with the picture.  These people had as much free time and energy to socialize as single childless Americans.  My American friends who are married with children are capable of straightening up the house and entertaining at home perhaps once every two months.  These upper middle-class Panamanians could do that every night if they wished.  Americans with kids are exhausted by the effort of driving them around and reshuffling the clutter.  Panamanians have their chauffeur do the chauffeuring.

All of the magic (two nannies and a full-time driver) happens for $1000/month.  A perfectly lovely house in a nice area can be had for $250,000.

[If you're looking to transition out of coding you might consider opening a helicopter flight school in Edmonton.  The economy here is booming due to the high price of oil (Alberta actually has more petroleum reserves than Saudi Arabia but they require some work to extract, unlike in the Persian Gulf).  There is one CFI here with a Robinson R22.  He charges CAD$500 per hour!  The price in the U.S. is closer to USD$200 or only about half.]

Welcome Adam

Welcome Adam 02/13/2004 05:42 AM
I delighted again to announce another new contributor to this weblog. Adam (aka snowman) is already quite a prolific weblogger — running useful.mac, everythinghurts.com, puzzleblog.com, totallyretro.com and (my particular favourite) everthingsoothes.com — so I’m glad he's able to share some of his time with us. Welcome aboard Adam!

What Adam Said

What Adam Said 08/07/2004 09:08 PM
A month or two ago, I got a call out of the blue from some guy I never heard at a recruiting shop saying “I’m looking for a reference on Adam Bosworth.” I’m afraid I gave the guy a hard time, first I took him for a prankster and then I ranted at him along the lines of “You’re talking about probably one of top twenty software people in the world, have you never heard of Quattro Pro and Microsoft Access and IE 4? What are you talking to me for?” To his credit, the guy was patient and explained that this was Google and Google is different. So I told him about my exposure to Adam over the years and all the things it’s painfully obvious that he’s good at, and I’m sure the other people they called did too, and now he’s at Google. But what I really wanted to say today is, go read his latest piece, he says in one paragraph what I’ve been raving about for months in the area of Web Services: “The really useful things turn out to be the simplest ones.” How many times do we have to re-learn this lesson? Anyhow, there’s more, and it’s all good.

Dinner with Adam

Dinner with Adam 05/04/2004 03:42 AM

On my last night in Amsterdam for this trip, I had dinner with Adam Curry at a meat house that reminded me of a bar in Mazomanie, WI, many many years ago. We had meat and beer. So did everyone else.

It's really interesting walking around Amsterdam with Adam, who is a very famous person here. People stare at him. Ask for his autograph. I get some of the reflected glory, who is that guy with the rock star? It's a pretty unusual thing for me.

Anyway, we talked about next things to do. It was good to get some one-on-one time with Adam this trip. Now it's off the Schipol, the Amsterdam airport, to go back to Boston, and whatever adventures await me there.

Adam Bosworth comes to the light

Adam Bosworth comes to the light 09/21/2004 10:14 AM

I have this vivid memory of meeting Adam Bosworth out on Dave Winer's patio - back in like 1997. He (at the time) as an all-star at Microsoft - having just created IE and a key guy in the XML game.

Then Adam went to BEA and now Google.

He's now caught up with revelations about media - where I was back then - 7-8 years ago.

Welcome to my life - Adam - now we get to see what Google will do about all this.....

Can you say "digital lifestyle aggregator?"

See yah at Web 2.0.

Here's Adam's post.....

These days, like everybody else, my media is increasingly on my hard disks. It is on PC's, Mac's, iPod's and recorders of TV like Tivo although mine is a Time Warner supplied variant. As such, like everyone else I know, it has profoundly changed the way I view my stereo and my home entertainment in general. I don't want to build a stereo from a stereo company. Nor do I want to buy one of these "home entertainment" PC's. I have more PC's at home already than I want/need. What I want is a super simple way to buy an amp and speakers (of good quality) and just plug them into a box that in turn, talks wirelessly to all of my PC's and/or hard disks. think of the box as a preamp, but it can be a lot simpler than old ones because the only sound source and media source is ethernet and 80211. I want my cell phone to support bluetooth to the box so that I can use it and its screen and keyboard/keypad to pick the album, artist, movie, tv show, etc to play/record and I want the box to support record like a Tivo, but on my hard disks. Why my cell phone? Because these days it has a good enough screen to show me a list of artists or albums or shows and I use one with a keyboard, but even without it, it has a keyboard and pointing and then there is just one device in my life. No more remote hell. I'm OK with the slightly painful iTunes style of DRM although it is irritating. In other words I'll limit my personal use of the recorded media to 4 or 5 personal machines like laptops or iPods.

From my point of view, this is hard. I go into a PC store and they don't understand amps or speakers and try to push little tiny ones on me. They don't understand wireless at all. I go into a stereo store and they think I still listen to sound from CD's and video from cable or DVD's when again, I typically want it on my disks. They will sell me a flatscreen for $5K or more without blinking, but ask for a 1 terabyte hard disk which should be <$1K and everyone just stares. One terabyte can store a LOT of movies and songs and shows. I also want what great recording quality on my sound and the stereo stores seem to know nothing about this. I'm sure I'll here from Mac people about how this is all easy/possible on Mac's, but I did go into an Apple store and wasn't happy with their knowledge about amps and speakers and cabling and sound. Apple does something that makes no sense to me at all. They think that the iPod is the sound source and I need a remote control for it thereforce. I want the iPod to be my remote control (when I'm in range of a sound system AND I have no headphones plugged in) and then talk to my "box" that is playing media.

Adam Curry samples a portion of H alley's interview with me on Memory Lane on his Daily Source Code Aug 17 2004 - (1.2MB mp3 of relevant section). I'm talking about how I showed the chairman of NHK (Japan's public broadcast network) a video that I downloaded from Adam Curry's MTV.COM. I think this was around 1994 or 1995... It was one of the few video files on the net at the time. I used to show this video all the time and I told this to Adam when I met him at Bloggercon. He said he wanted a copy of the video and I thought I might have it around, but I looked and I don't have it. Sorry Adam! Does anyone else have it? It's a bit of Internet nostalgia and history that would be fun to have. Unfortunately, I think this predates archive.org.
