Image Genius

Image Genius 06/16/2004 06:00 PM

Batch Image Processing - Image Genius: Thirty bucks buys you this batch image processor.

What's so special about that, you ask? This one includes (1) an FTP upload, and (2) a folder monitor. This means you can find an image, drag it to a specified folder, and it will be automatically resized and uploaded to the images folder on your server. That, my friend, is a handy trick.

Additionally, the interface is fantastic. There's a concept in interface design of "user models" and "system models." The user model is how the user thinks your app works, and the system model is how it actually works. The "implementation model," then, is how the interface bridges the gap.

This one does a fine job by using a "pipeline" metaphor. You create a pipeline of actions and you can watch each action highlight as it's applied to the image before the app moves on to the next action. In my head, this is exactly how I thought it should work and I'm immediately comfortable with it as a result.

For example, in the picture above right, I have a problem — I'm applying the border after the drop shadow, which means the border runs around my drop shadow as well as the actual image. To change this, I just dragged the "border" action up the pipeline to a point above the "drop shadow" action and let it go. I didn't have to consult any documentation for this — I just figured this method of doing it made sense, and, sure enough, it worked. The implementation model matches my user model.

I actually bought a copy, and I'm cheap.

Google's Genius

Google's Genius 04/30/2004 12:02 PM
Google had three different pressures on them. They had investors who wanted desperately to send Google money. They had shareholders who wanted to cash out. And they had founders who didn't want to give anything up and wanted to stay honest. Their IPO cleverly manages to solve all three problems. The founders keep honest by telling folks they have no respect for investors and that Google is probably a bad investment (and also by bypassing the comically corrupt investment bank system). They keep control through the dual-class stock system. And then they let the investors hand their money to the shareholders. Now I'm no expert, but IPO lawyer Gordon Smith, at his venturpreneur weblog, has been analyzing the Google IPO and doesn't think Google has much of a growth story. Nor, apparently, does anyone else....

Screenshot Genius is an arbitrary precision integer and multiple precision floating point calculator. It includes its own programming language similar in some aspects to C, bc, or Pascal. It can deal with rational numbers and complex numbers. It has matrix support as well. It uses the gmp library so it is very fast for calculations of large numbers. It has a command line and a GNOME interface. The GNOME interface supports plotting functions and 3D surfaces.
Changes:
MPFR has been updated to 2.1.1. There are bugfixes, documentation updates, a bit of internal reorganization, more line plotting functions, and the ability to turn off the blinking cursor.

Here's an amazing post on Slashdot from someone who claims his father designed many of the coolest widgets and gizmos in Disneyland:
Some of the Disneyland items he's made...

- Invented/installed the fireflys in Pirates of the Carribean

- Came up with putting the green-eyed rats at the end of Pirates as you go up back to ground level. We have a bunch of them at home and put them in windows and under the Christmas tree

- Invented the light flicker-ers that have been used at Dland for almost 30 years to make plain lightbulbs in opaque houseings look like they are flame

- Real-time population counter for Disneyland. Even went to the president's office and installed the LED display on his desk (prior to the popularization of "computer networks")
