MyWeb Hits the SERPS

MyWeb Hits the SERPS 06/17/2005 05:11 PM

"Was doing some searching on Yahoo this morning and noticed myweb has been added to the serps - each website in the serps has a "save" and "block" next to it for people to log in and start using MyWeb. Wonder if they'll be using this information to determine quality within the serps, etc as well."

PHP 5 Hits The Street

PHP 5 Hits The Street 07/14/2004 10:09 AM

PHP version 5.0.0 has now officially been released, bringing a large number of long-overdue changes to PHP.

  • The Zend Engine II with a new object model and dozens of new features.
  • XML support has been completely redone in PHP 5, all extensions are now focused around the excellent libxml2 library (http://www.xmlsoft.org/).
  • A new SimpleXML extension for easily accessing and manipulating XML as
PHP objects. It can also interface with the DOM extension and vice-versa.

  • A brand new built-in SOAP extension for interoperability with Web Services.

  • A new MySQL extension named MySQLi for developers using MySQL 4.1 and later.
This new extension includes an object-oriented interface in addition to
a traditional interface; as well as support for many of MySQL's new features,
    such as prepared statements.

  • SQLite has been bundled with PHP. For more information on SQLite,
    please visit their website.

  • Streams have been greatly improved, including the ability to access
    low-level socket operations on streams.

  • And lots more...

The biggest improvements are the chan ges to Zend, the core of PHP, that makes PHP a full-fledged OO language now. Features like private, static, abstract, and final methods, as well as the option to (somewhat) strongly type variables, mean that PHP can now be used to build serious object models. When using OO techniques in PHP 4, I tended to run into the barriers caused by these missing features, and it always felt like the language was trying to push me into writing spaghetti code. Sadly, still no schema support.

hi5 hits 1M users 07/21/2004 12:38 PM

hi5 has just announced that they've reached 1M end-users.

Congrats Ramu et al.

OK Judith - here's your next task.

Who cares if there are 300 or 3,000 YASNSs. But we DO care when some of them reach 1M members!

So who else is part of the 1M club?

And BTW I'm not talking about dating sites. I'm talking about sites who have over 1M end-users inter-connected together through degrees of relationship.

Friendster, Tickle, MySpace and now hi5 - any others?

Wi-Fi Hits Marietta

Wi-Fi Hits Marietta 02/11/2004 10:56 AM
Another story in the ongoing saga of Wi-Fi expansion in public spaces: When Wi-Fi starts to hit a town -- in this case, Marietta, Georgia -- it's like electricity or phone service first getting turned on. But more so: people now know the context for what public space Wi-Fi could mean, and many individuals and businesses in every community are already using Wi-Fi for their local networks. The anticipation and expectation is quite high. Eventually, it will be just another technology, but it's still fresh and sparkling in many parts of the U.S. and the rest of the world....

Now and again, when I have time, I like to write little funny stories. I don’t actually have time to write one right now, but I figured I’d point to a few of them, in case you’re relatively new to my weblog and may have missed them.

Here’s one, probably the most popular, on doing bong hits with Bill Gates.

My personal favorite is on how it’s so hard to teach squirrels to play baseball.

Here’s my BBEdit song.

Here’s one on the inherent evil of that Three Dog Night song Joy to the World.

Then there’s my list of top ten really mean put-downs.

Though it’s not terrifically funny, I like it as a rant: how I don’t want wearable computers.

Here’s a post on how I like to say inappropriate things. I compare a part of my anatomy to a roll of duct tape.

Another personal favorite is Frank, a fable.
