I'm slowly working my way through two weeks of electronic and paper piles (I'm especially behind on email), but I'm still enjoying my Treo! I haven't had much time to customize it further, but suffice it to say that I'm in love. And apparently I'm not the only one who's happy with a camera in a phone.

Camera Phones Rival DVD Players as Fastest Growing Devices Fly Off Shelves While Prices Plummet

"Teeny camera cellphones appear to be on pace to replace DVDs as the fastest-growing consumer technology device ever.

Introduced three years ago in Japan and less than a year ago in the USA, they've caught on so fast that Nokia and other phonemakers say most new phones from now on will have built-in cameras.

'They're becoming a standard feature,' says Nokia spokesman Keith Nowak at the Comdex technology show here. Nokia, the No. 1 cellphone maker, introduced six models in the past two months. All include cameras....

To date, 80 million camera phones have sold worldwide vs. 6 million in the USA, research firm IDC says. This year, analyst Ron Glaz of IDC says more camera phones will be sold worldwide, 57 million, than digital cameras, 44 million.

By comparison, DVD players, introduced in 1997 and called the fastest-growing consumer tech device by the Consumer Electronics Association, sold 30 million players in its first three years, says researcher In-Stat/MDR." [USA Today, via Reit er's Camera Phone Report]

We love to see you smile

We love to see you smile 03/14/2003 01:09 PM
But that seems to have gotten in the way of Samantha Robichaud's promotion at a McDonald's in Northport, Alabama. Samantha Robichaud was born with the Sturge-Weber syndrome that resulted in a purple birthmark covering her face known as a Port Wine Stain. She joined McDonald's as a cook in August 2000, "premised upon the assurance that she would have the opportunity for promotion to management". Eligibility for a management position entails proficiency in handling several areas of the restaurant, including the front counter. But she was removed from the front counter by the manager who countered she might "make babies cry or scare customers off". After being told that in January 2001, she kept to herself over the next few workdays, when the manager eventually informed her that her quality of work had declined. She quit the next day and filed a complaint with the EEOC.

Smile, You're Always on Camera

Smile, You're Always on Camera 09/10/2004 08:58 AM

Chicago plans advanced surveillance: I don't know what's more amazing — that Chicago is going to have a network of 2,000 cameras monitoring their city streets, or that the ACLU didn't flip their lid about it.

The linchpin in the network — paid for with a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and scheduled to be up by March 2006 — is software designed to detect "suspicious" activity.

For instance, if someone left a suitcase in a stairwell, the software would engage any camera within range and alert a worker at the emergency operations center. It would do the same if an individual rushed up to another and dragged him away. A series of cameras could track fleeing criminals, and 911 operators would be able to give police descriptions of suspects.

The Acid2 Test: The Smile and Row
Fourteen

The Acid2 Test: The Smile and Row
Fourteen
04/18/2005 07:18 AM

Even though I consider row 14 to be ambiguous, I went ahead and modified the Safari code to yield the correct expected behavior. It isn't so much that the test is wrong as that it is testing unspecified behavior.

I also noticed thanks to Ian Hickson that the smile was not in fact rendering correctly. The reason is that Safari will expand floats to encompass overhanging child floats even when the outer float has specified a height explicitly in CSS. I changed the code so that this is now only done when height is auto, and the smile now renders as it should.

Updated screenshot below. All that I have left is fixing the object element's behavior in order to completely pass the test.
