If you've ever built any sort of web application, you've probably found yourself using tabs to create some part of the interface. I'm no Eric Meyer, but I came up with a pretty handy way to do that this afternoon. Read on to see my example, and if you have any cool CSS tricks we should know about, post a comment!

Searching the Invisible Tabs

Searching the Invisible Tabs 12/11/2003 09:40 AM
Searching the Invisible Tabs
http ://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3115131

Tired of wading through thousands -- possibly millions -- of results to your Web searches? How would it be if search engines offered lists of category tabs -- so you could confine your search to relevant Web sites? Too restrictive, too cumbersome (after all, how many categories would there need to be)? Well then, how about invisible tabs -- behind-the-scenes functions that would automatically categorize your query and deliver results within that category? AskJeeves and others already do it to a degree. Example: Test AskJeeves against Google for "pictures of DNA." AskJeeves delivers images; Google offers a list of URLs. "It's not rocket science to see your query and decide that it makes sense to push the invisible image tab for you. But the change it produces, and perceived relevance to me, is dramatic," says SearchEngineWatch.com editor Danny Sullivan. To avoid frustrating searchers by, say, returning shopping lists instead product reviews, the search engine might come back with questions formatted as listings: "What would you like to do? Show me prices for this product from merchants across the Web; Show me product reviews from across the Web; Show me general matching content from across the Web."

IE Tabs Suck Memory Too

IE Tabs Suck Memory Too 06/17/2005 04:33 PM
Adam Stiles notes that Microsoft's IE Tabs Suck Memory like there's no tomorrow: I never considered the possibility that each IE7 tab would have its own copy of 3rd party toolbars. But that's the direction Microsoft has taken. What's the problem with that approach? Every time you open a new browser tab (which tabbed browser users do much more frequently than single-window browser users), you have to create new instances of any 3rd-party bars. Ouch. Opening a folder of 25...

Approaches for the too-many-tabs problem

Approaches for the too-many-tabs problem 12/02/2003 01:27 AM

tabs.gif
I've seen various, slightly differing solutions to the too-many-tabs-to-fit problem recently. Amazon does a "more tabs" thing at the right, the new AOL has an embedded tab scrolling thing (the tabs that are not embedded don't scroll, thus allowing for a selection of more important tabs that are always visible), and SAP has a scrolling tab solution without the tabs that stay (couldn't find a screenshot...). Point to other solutions in the comments and I'll add screenshots.

It seems like the too-many-tabs problem is slowly coalescing towards a standard solution for websites.

I've seen the Mac solution below being used on a weblog at one point, but I can't find it anymore. Anyone?

Firefox and RSS; Question about Closing
Tabs
09/17/2004 12:41 PM
The new version of Mozilla Firefox is out and supports RSS. Don Park calls the RSS support "crappy and useless." Question: One of my favorite features in Safari for OS X is the little circled X in each tab, so you can close it by clicking on the actual tab instead of having to go all the way to the right side of the window in Firefox to click the close-the-tab X there. Is there any Firefox add-on that makes it do the same thing?

The multiple tab feature of Firefox (and Opera before it) is enough of a reason to drop Microsoft Internet Explorer ... which, apparently, people are doing at an increased pace, although IE still has something like 93% of the market. But I currently have 31 instances of Firefox open, each with 1-4 tabs. So, I'd like an extension that lists all the open tabs in all the open instances. My dream extension would let me jump to any of those tabs. It would also let me close them or close multiple instances with a single click. And it would give...

How quickly they learn

How quickly they learn 03/08/2004 11:07 PM

I remember back in 2000 when Blogger was still a relatively new service, Alton Brown started using the app on his site. So a few years go by, the format explodes and now I see he's posting photos (I'm guessing from his phone) of himself in the hospital, to keep fans up to date on his recent collapse. Pretty amazing to see a TV personality embrace the format and use it to its fullest extent after all these years.

Also worth noting is that I found it via girlhacker, who posted some stuff about the upcoming new Iron Chef supershow featuring everyone I love from the Food Network (except Bobby Flay's involved).
