Here's the three of us - hanging out at the VIDfest reception.

Dick is getting ready to launch his commenting system which utilizes the Sxip Networks technology, while Roland is building a great company - called Bryght.

Dick Hardt on SXIP

Dick Hardt on SXIP 12/19/2004 03:02 PM
My interview with Dick Hardt, now online at IT Conversations, will hardly convince anyone that SXIP is the one, true way to implement federated identity management, but it could help inject doubt into the notion that the heavyweight Liberty Alliance/SAML...

I nominate Dick Hardt

I nominate Dick Hardt 12/30/2004 04:45 PM

Doc Searls in a partially defensive response to something Da ve Winer wrote about identity - asks:

....identity needs a Dave Winer: an independent developer and free-range technologist who tirelessly advocates something that will work for everybody — and for users and developers diggin' together. I'd like to name names, but I'd rather see somebody step forward.

So I nominate Dick Hardt and his Sxip Networks as that person.

I run around yelling about FOAF and identity allot - but I'm head-down right now making sure that some of these new standards actually ship.

Dick has code that's working and a pitch that works.

Roland Honekamp

Roland Honekamp 04/10/2005 11:11 PM

One of the many great decisions Christiane has made during her tenure at iCommons was to bring Roland Honekamp on to lend a helping hand in Berlin. Roland, a former Net entrepreneur, quickly made himself an indispensable utility player, attending iCommons launches on short notice, helping out with press relations and myriad internal iCommons matters, and developing, along with Christiane, Heather Ford, and Mary Rundle, tons of iCommons training and reference materials for the dozens of iCommons project leads. He's also been a great source of ideas on the strategy and future shape of CC's international efforts. The exponential growth of iCommons over the last year has been in no small part due to Roland's joining the team.

Like Christiane, Roland has an infectious laugh and an easy way with just about everyone. I didn't get the chance to meet Roland face-to-face until this September, when we were roommates in New York for the WIRED benefit concert, and again last month at the iCommons Europe summit, where I learned a lot about Roland's long-standing interest in (and skill at) international relations and diplomacy.

I'm sad that I won't get the chance to work more with Roland, on CC stuff anyway, but I look forward to keeping in touch with him. Here's to Herr Honekamp and the passion and formidable business acumen he's infused CC with.

Roland groks it

Roland groks it 07/17/2004 06:15 PM

I'm starting to like Roland Tanglao more and more and not just because we're about to start working together.

Here's his post - post-BlogTalk - on the ramifications of cross-platform webapps that act like normal 'apps'.

To me - the ODDpost-Yahoo deal is much more than just a GMail copycat reaction. It's a clear statement that rich, interesting, compelling, easy to use interfaces really DO matter and that HTML sucks just as bad as my instinct told me - back in 1994.

This is a big deal for Laszlo and Flex and Dreamfactory and otehr "non-HTML" UI front-end toolkits.

Here's Roland's post....strong>

Another random takeaway.

The next generation of web app "good enough" will incorporate the lessons learned from Gmail: leverage cross browser and cross platform DTHML and JavaScript to create a web app that is more dynamic and responsive and therefore is closer to a native application.

And since most social software is a web app, this is a lesson for those developers. Don't think this is a profound or new idea but it's been burning in the back of my head since I left Vienna.

Roland MIDI Accordian

Roland MIDI Accordian 06/17/2005 06:13 PM

fr7_md-1.gifI just thought an accordion post would brighten my day a bit, so here goes. This super-sexy Lady of Spain machine uses physical modeling to simulate the look and feel of a real accordion, while adding a high-tech edge to your best Chicken Dance rendition. MIDI makes it digital, and the FR-7 even includes built-in speakers, so you can be a one-man polka band.

That said, please pop over the jump in order to see why you should NOT buy a mildly weird kid an accordion. While I do appreciate that my parents introduced me to music at an early age, if you are in a similar situation, please consider buying the little tyke a Stratocaster and a practice amp.

Hey Roland - Check out WebOutliner

Hey Roland - Check out WebOutliner 12/17/2004 06:28 PM

I'd send this to Roland via email - but my domains are still on hsi shit-list - so I keep getting bounceback from everyting I try and email him.

So here's Roland's post - which my answer is - The WebOutliner.

I want MarsLiner! I think in outlines so all I want for Christmas is an outliner like MORE or Radio that outputs the MetaWeblog API (including the Mov able Type MetaWeblog API extensions) so I can post to my blog text with simple markup (links, bold, italics, paragraphs and break, other tags would be nice but I don't need them!) and simple media (pictures, and audio and video for podcasts). That's it, that's all. Brent, please change your mind because I think you could sell a ton of these things. If not maybe the open source outliner based on Frontier that Dave is spearheading or maybe Omni Outliner 3 with a suitable export to Meta Weblog API script (doesn't seem like it since OO 2 which I love doesn't even do links!) will give me what I want. Otherwise, some day, I am going to have to dust off my dusty programming mitts and do it myself!

From inessential.com : Weblog: MarsEdit report.:

QUOTE

But MarsLiner was to be a huge improvement, it was supposed to be the outliner of my dreams.

But then I discovered something important: most people don't care about outliners. And the people who do care about outliners, many of them would want the embedded media features that I didn't care about. So I realized that the market would be small, just a subset of the outliner market, which is small enough already - and there are already some great outliners already.

Dick Cheney is a Robot!

Dick Cheney is a Robot! 06/20/2004 07:17 PM
According to the Weekly World News, an unnamed CIA source has revealed that Dick Cheney is a robot. Unfortunately, says the source, the designers were "unable to give it emotions and compassion". The robot can move and speak almost as well as a human and its electronic brain has 24/7 wireless Internet access. A leaked photo shows Cheney with a portion of his chest folded back, revealing wiring and circuit boards. While the source reported that Cheney-bot is unable to learn from experience, he also commented that "the damn thing is smart, I'll give it that much." Cheney's frequent hospital visits are actually a cover for maintenance on his circuits. A scan of the original article can be found at Indymedia.org.

MP3 interviews with Philip K Dick 06/07/2004 04:17 AM
David sez, "A friend loaned me a bunch of tapes, and one of them turned out to be an audio interview of Philip K. Dick, interviewed in his home. You can hear the television on and his kids playing in the background. Very relaxed and chatty. I transfered it to mp3s. Everything you hear is exactly what was on the tape. I don't have a lot of server space, so I'll have to post the mp3s a batch at a time. I wouldn't mind if someone wants to provide greater hosting capabilities." Here's David's email if you have some spare hosting capacity you'd like to pass along.

Karen Kwiatkowski, who worked on the Defense Department's Near East and South Asia desk during the buildup to the Iraq war. 'They didn't care about the truth. They had an agenda. I'd never seen anything like it. They deformed everything.'" [Did you know that "dancing revolution" blogeur John Barlow was a former Cheney campaign worker? I sure didn't.]
