"Today I received my 100th question via AIM. Obviously I was a believer in the program to begin with, but I must say that it has exceeded my expectations....

For no cost not only have we become more available, but I've helped patrons that otherwise wouldn't have been helped. I've done more Young Adult Readers' Advisory in the past 2 months than I have in the previous 2 years. YAs have sent me messages asking about the library's hours, and prizes for summer reading program. I bet that these things aren't a big enough deal for them to make a telephone call, but shooting me a quick message is more convenient. Perhaps this is grandiose, but I can't help but thinking that I'm breathing some life into libraries for these kids." [walking paper]

Government's s33krt1t ethics listserv

Government's s33krt1t ethics listserv 03/17/2005 03:56 AM
Cory Doctorow: Andre sez, "You mentioned the Government Printing Office (GPO) in an entry about applying DRM to government documents. Well, my associate Domingo and I have been on to the GPO for a while now - they have a listerv that has some suspicious stuff, such as the OGE-ETHICSINFO-L list which gives ethical advice to the executive branch, and requires you have a .gov or .mil e-mail address to join and remain a member of the list. I joined the list and dumped the contents using wget in August, and turned up some interesting stuff, such as 20040419.txt, which advises the executive branch to turn down gifts from Microsoft. We filed a FOIA request with the GPO for info on their mailing list and are awaiting a response."
It has come to OGE's attention that Microsoft Corp. is offering free promotional software valued at over $500 to IT personnel at various agencies. OGE has written Microsoft asking it to refrain from doing this, citing the implications associated with the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch. We understand that the Department of the Army also has sent a letter to Microsoft asking that these gifts cease. Please advise your IT personnel that they are prohibited from personally accepting these gifts. However, OGE does recognize that an agency may have gift acceptance authority that allows acceptance of this software by the agency for its use.
Link (Thanks, Andre!)

Update: Daniel sez, "Using a quick google search using the term: "inurl:listserv.*.gov" i found a hell of a lot more (54k hits). some intresting stuff on there, weird what you can find on goverment sites. Some mailman ones as well.

Japanese government's idiotic plans for
wireless LAN "tax"

Japanese government's idiotic plans for
wireless LAN "tax"
07/21/2004 01:14 AM
From the Japan Times: Japan's telecommunications ministry announced yesterday it may force consumer WLAN users to pay spectrum user fees.
[T]he ministry plans to hit the users with these fees because such appliances use almost the same spectrum as mobile phones, whose users are required to pay the fees, they said. The move might provoke stiff opposition from product manufacturers as it is likely to affect their sales. The ministry plans to collect fees from users of information appliances when they purchase these products, according to the sources.

Manufacturers of home appliances are currently stepping up efforts to develop information appliances that are linked via wireless networks and can be controlled from anywhere. Spectrum user fees have been charged in connection with licensed broadcasting and radio stations, as well as with cellular phone companies.

Games pot has more on the story, and points out that gamers in Japan who use the Nintendo DS or Sony PSP would also be affected because both use wireless LANs to connect.

Reports say the bill will not be proposed to Japan's parliament until 2005 -- leaving ample time for device manufacturers and pissed-off wireless enthusiasts to raise a fuss.

This reference explains how to use the PDS Application Programming Interface (API) to allow client applications to access Project Server portfolio data. Client applications can programmatically log on to Project Server and use SOAP to call PDS API methods. The PDS implements a SOAP listener, which receives method calls in XML format and returns an XML response.

04/13/2005 03:26 AM
The Project Group GmbH (TPG), one of Germany’s premier providers of add-in products, consulting services, and training for Microsoft Enterprise Project Management (EPM), today announced Version 3.0 of its flagship PSLink® product. PSLink is the world’s leading interface between Microsoft Project and SAP/R3. Using PSLink, customers can synchronize project data in both directions between the two market-leading environments; simplify several tasks; and eliminate the risk of errors, because data administration in both systems is unnecessary. Version 3.0 of PSLink will be available shortly in its Standard Edition (SE) and Controlling Edition (CE). [PRWEB Apr 13, 2005]

On Friday, June 25, the Washington Post held an online interview with David Bossie, the president of Citizens United, a conservative advocacy group. Mr. Bossie has filed a complaint (pdf) with the Federal Election Commission against Michael Moore's controversial film, Fahrenheit 9/11. The following is a transcript of the discussion.

Websites Who Want To Remain Bad

Websites Who Want To Remain Bad 07/20/2004 12:40 PM
Sometimes you have to wonder what certain companies or organizations are thinking. A few years ago, when Ellis Island put their records online, they had a dreadful interface. A genealogist with the skill and the time, created a new, much more user friendly front end that quickly became the preferred way for many genealogists to search the site. Of course, Ellis Island then threatened to sue him to shut down the site. The same thing seems to be playing itself out over in the UK, where someone who had problems with Odeon Cinemas' website built a better version (one that would actually work in non-IE browsers). For his troubles in helping them completely for free and bringing more business to them, he received a cease and desist letter. No wonder no one wants to help anyone out any more. You might get sued.
