What Dell Support Thinks of Dell
What Dell Support Thinks of Dell
03/30/2005 04:59 PMIn an InfoWorld Gripe Line Blog, anonymous Dell
employees are asked to make their feelings known about working for
Dell. As we all know, Dell moved their tech support to India and they
have employees in other parts of the world now too. It sounds like the
new users dumb questions and working with Windows constant crashing
and errors have driven even the Indian support workers to the brink of
giving up. Here are a few quotes from the above story..
Back about eighteen
months ago, the comments started off pretty apologetic about the Dell
support gripes readers were airing. A poster who said he or she had
just resigned after six months with Dell support in Hyderabad said
that Dell technicians would sometimes know right off that a problem
required a replacement component, "but we are bound by company policy
which prohibits us from dispatching components until we finish the
script given us by Dell management," the poster wrote. "I basically
felt really bad in situations wherein I had to make really old people
open up their computers, and I did in fact meet people on the phone
who would be in tears if we told them that they need to open their
machines.
"I too am working in Dell tech support,"
the poster said, saying his job had been to route calls to the proper
support group. "The great thing is that tomorrow is my last day here.
Great because this by far has been one of the least gratifying and
frustrating positions I have ever held. Yes, there are extensive and
considerable problems with Dell tech support. Their outsourcing to
India is not even the least of them. Every day is a continuous assault
by absolutely clueless and irate customers and an ineffective
phone-based support system that is enough to make anyone crack. I'm
saying that it all sucks: Dell's systems and their support and the
morons who purchase them ... So many times I've had to restrain myself
from telling customers who are whining about what a piece their Dell
is that, hey, guess you should've bought a Mac. Goodbye, Dell!"

Dell won't help customers remove spyware
Dell won't help customers remove spyware
12/03/2003 08:43 AMDell has issued a memo to its tech-support staff, telling them not to
help Dell customers remove spyware from their systems, because it "may
conflict with user license agreements of other applications installed
on your system." I.e., Dell has decided that its duty to its users is
superceded by its duty to upholding "contracts" that you "sign" when
you click on the I Agree button after downloading this app or that,
contracts in which you promise to allow spyware to be installed on
your machine, and promise not to try to remove it. Nice one, Dell.
This means we do not take callers to download.com or doxdesk.com, nor
do we recommend spyware removal programs, nor do we advise callers on
the use of spyware removal programs. This includes using phrases "We
don't support the removal of spyware, but I use..."

Dell Wants To Educate Customers About
Spyware
07/20/2004 02:56 PMDell really wants to change its image concerning spyware, apparently.
Last year, the company got slammed for
inter
nal memos telling tech support not to help customers who were having
problems with spyware. They were instructed to not even point
them to spyware removal sources, for some weird fear that some of the
software they included on their machines might be disabled by spyware
removal tools, and they didn't want to get into trouble with their
partners. By April, the company admitted that spyware calls were
a large
percentage of their customer support calls, and now they're trying
to be a bit more proactive about things by
trying to teach
customers about spyware. They also plan to offer anti-spyware
software on their machines, but it remains to be seen if this is just
the type of anti-spyware software that points out spyware or that
actually stops it.

Yahoo's Offers New Anti-Spyware Tool...
That Actually Finds Spyware
08/05/2004 03:50 AMIt appears that Yahoo heard the backlash loud and clear a few months
back when they released an anti-spyware tool that
just so
happened to skip over adware from Yahoo partners. The latest
version, built on PestPatrol's technology will now
default to
notifying users of both "spyware" and what they consider to be
"adware" and then give the user the choice of what to do. I
haven't tested the product yet, but it sounds like they're moving in
the right direction. It still makes you wonder what they were
thinking in offering a purposely crippled offering. People know what
spyware is, and telling them that spyware isn't spyware doesn't change
how people feel about it. It also doesn't make them look kindly back
at the company that provided them with the bogus anti-spyware tool in
the first place.

Yahoo's Famed Anti-Spyware App Allows
Spyware From Partners
06/02/2004 10:10 AMWe didn't write about Yahoo's new "anti-spyware" toolbar that they
announced last week, because it seemed to receive plenty of hype, and
there were no real reviews of how it worked. There are so many
so-called anti-spyware applications out there that
don't
actually stop spyware and adware for fear of upsetting marketing
companies or out of worries that actually stopping spyware may make
some applications stop working (upsetting the user), that we figured
Yahoo's anti-spyware app (hype and all) probably wouldn't be much to
bother with. It certainly looks like that may be the case. eWeek is
now reporting that Yahoo tries to dance the careful dance of not
upsetting certain companies who
threate
n to sue people who call their application spyware. Of course,
the situation is even more complex because Claria (who you probably
know as Gator - despite their attempt to
change
their name to shake that spyware label) is also a partner of
Yahoo. So, it's really not surprising that
the default
setting for Yahoo's anti-spyware app won't actually remove services
like Gator or WhenU. Instead, Yahoo's spyware remover claims
these programs are "adware" and will only remove them if you click and
extra check box
each time you run the program. In other words,
once again, you can't trust a provider of anti-spyware software,
because they're playing both sides of the fence: partnering with
providers on the one hand, and then offering weak removal products on
the other. If Yahoo were serious about removing spyware from the
computers of users they would refuse to partner with companies that
used surreptitious tactics to be installed on computers. Instead,
they want to look good to users in the front, while letting in
spyware/adware from partners through the backdoor.

AOL Offers Spyware Stopper... Just After
They Started Offering Spyware
04/22/2004 02:36 AMJust a few weeks after saying that they're going to start
bundling
spyware/adware with their instant messenger product, AOL announces
their
latest
anti-spyware application. While we've been complaining about
anti-spyware from ISPs that just points out the spyware, AOL claims
that this version will disable (though not delete) the spyware. I
wonder if it will catch the spyware that AOL installs themselves.

Fax Technology Refuses To Die
Fax Technology Refuses To Die
12/15/2003 03:15 PMDespite the rapid rise of digital technologies for communicating, the
fax machine
is
still a major part of business communications. I still have a fax
machine next to my desk. It's still easier for handling documents
that require signatures and it's a one-step process rather than the
two steps of "scan and email" that the article suggest is a better
process. If scanners include an "email this to" function that somehow
communicates with your email client, then I could finally stop using
the fax machine. However, many companies still give out fax numbers
rather than an email address you can send a document to. In fact, as
the article points out, fax numbers still receive prominent placement
on corporate documents and business cards.
Induce Act Refuses to Die
Induce Act Refuses to Die
09/14/2004 11:00 AMLast month, insiders in Washington felt the Induce Act, which would
outlaw technology that could contribute to copyright infringement, was
history. According to music activist organization Downhill Battle, a
year-old organization dedicated to bringing balance to a debate often
dominated by the RIAA and large music labels, this is no longer the
case. "We were told by people on (Capital) Hill that it is less likely
that the bill will come to the floor by itself and have a nice debate
and vote," says Nicholas Reville, Downhill Battle Co-Founder. "More
likely the Induce Act is going to be snuck through a back door in
legislative procedure. The only supporters in any industry or interest
group are in Hollywood. From their perspective (the Induce Act) is not
going to happen if it gets full airing."
