Steal this music!

Steal this music!

Steal this music! 06/17/2005 04:21 PM

Why one man steals music. Either a wonderfully scathing indictment of a music industry that doesn't care about its customers, or a pathetic attempt at justifying illegal activities, depending on your perspective. (Looks like Glenn Mcdonald didn't close up shop after all.) [Via.]

There no better news than hearing there's a new release from the Kleptones.

I haven't heard it yet, but just started the torrent downloading.

Update: It took hours to come down via BT (bittrickle). I've only gotten through three tracks, but it's amazing so far, tons of classic samples. And Andy's on it for a fast direct download. Highly recommended bit of illegal art.

Oh No, Technology Is Going To Steal Your

Oh No, Technology Is Going To Steal Your
Job... Again
06/25/2004 12:11 PM
This is getting a bit tiresome, but it looks like now that people are finally starting to calm down about offshoring, they're suddenly up in arms about automation. First there was the complaint a few months ago saying we should stop working on certain technologies in order to save jobs. Now, Strategy Analytics, an analyst firm that should know better than to put out overhyped reports that don't understand history is saying that offshoring is nothing compared to how automation will kill mid-level service jobs. Once again, all you need to do is look at history to show this is wrong. Every time automation removes the need for certain jobs, it's opened up many more opportunities, often expanding the overall economy and raising our standards of living. It wasn't that long ago that you needed a human operator to connect every phone call. However, once we figured out how to automate that process, it didn't necessarily mean a destruction of all those operator jobs, but a new revolution in telephony which expanded so many businesses and created so many new jobs that no one could have imagined when the "operator" process was first automated. It's getting repetitive to say it, but innovation is not a zero-sum game. Automating a job doesn't just mean that the jobs go away, but that many more new opportunities open up.

Will Intel Steal the Show?

Will Intel Steal the Show? 03/08/2004 11:15 PM
Intel's moves in the Wi-Fi market may squeeze out other players in the market, including access point makers: Intel is moving toward building chips that can allow a laptop to serve as an AP. Some say if that becomes standard gear in laptops, it may threaten the vendors that make standalone access points. I have to agree with some of the comments in this story that while in some cases it is convenient for a laptop to serve as an AP, at other times it isn't. I would prefer a standalone AP in my house because otherwise I'd have to keep my laptop running all the time. I suspect that laptops with built-in APs will appeal to a certain market but it won't kill the market for standalone APs. Intel could also give TiVo a run for its money as it develops chips for entertainment PCs. TiVo is apparently working to make its product cheaper and easier to use in anticipation for the competition....

Using Cameraphones to Steal Identities

Using Cameraphones to Steal Identities 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

thief_caph.jpg imageThere's a bit of a scare story on Florida Today about criminals using cameraphones to steal personal information from you, like credit card numbers or ATM PINs. While no arrests have been made—in fact, it's all speculation!—there's an important lesson we can learn from all of this: pay for everything by trading bales of home-spun quilts.

I've been looking at sites owned by people who aren't sophisticated internet users. Nothing wrong with that - except that the web design companies they sign up with steal their content and they don't know.
