Delphi Readers Choice Awards

Delphi Readers Choice Awards 08/03/2004 06:01 PM

Although I've flirted with other languages, all of my shareware applications (HomeSite, TopStyle, FeedDemon) were coded using Borland Delphi. One of the great things about Delphi is that there are so many excellent third-party components and tools available, many of which were just honored in Delphi Informant Magazine's 2004 Readers Choice Awards. Since I get a number of emails asking which tools I use, I figured I'd highlight some of the winners that I rely on.

TopStyle and FeedDemon both use the excellent Express Bars and ExpressQuantumGrid component suites from Developer Express. Developer Express is one of few companies whose products I would buy without even trying them out - they're that good.

I use FinalBuilder to automate the creation of each TopStyle and FeedDemon build, and I wouldn't live without it. Likewise, I wouldn't live without AQTime, which I rely on for locating performance bottlenecks in my code.

Notably absent from the awards is the superb InnoSetup installer. Even though InnoSetup is free, I gladly donated to the developer since his work has saved me a lot of headaches.

Cory Doctorow: The 2005 Bloggie Awards are open for nominations! Last year, thanks to your generous votes, Boing Boing won four Bloggies, including Best Weblog. It was a stupendous honor to accept these awards on behalf of my co-editors, and I've got one of the certificates hanging beside my desk now; it gives me a good feeling every time I look at it. I've just done my nominating -- I hope you'll think of Boing Boing when you do yours. Link

Open-source gurus win software awards

By Dawn Kawamoto
ZDNet, a CNET Networks site, and Open Source Initiative on Thursday announced four winners of their first Open Source Award. The award is designed to encourage excellence in open-source software.

Awards were given to Julian Seward and the Valgrind project for creating an x86-based Linux systems debugger; the Pango project for creating a way to lay out and render international text; the VideoLAN project for enabling all video types to stream on a TCP/IP network; and Paul Davis and the JACK (Jack Audio Connection Kit) project for developing a low-latency audio server to create and edit high-quality audio on open-source operating systems. [CNET News.com - Front Door]

Cool a whole bunch of open soruce stuff I never even heard of - winning awards.  This is what's real in the software business nowadays.  Everyone else is just transitioning over and they don't know it yet.

The 2003 OSDir.com Editor's Choice Awards in Open Source: Here's a great survey of all that is good in the open source world. Movable Type made the list for Perl (even though it's not technically open source), and I was surprised to see Ruby in there as a Perl alternative.

It does, however, prove a theory of mine: the adoption of a new language or software is directly proportional to the amount of shelf space it gets at the local Barnes and Noble. Ruby's real estate has been increasing.
