If Then Software has released
DeskLapz, a utility for Mac OS X v10.3 or higher that provides users
with up-to-the-minute images recorded by Webcams on the beach, in the
mountains, and elsewhere. DeskLapz's developer said the inspiration
was "Sundial," an old Mac utility that displayed time-lapse video over
a 24 hour span. DeskLapz comes with three cameras unlocked; making a
donation to If Then Software unlocks seven other cameras.

Fuji Novel Batteries “Reverse Current
Prevention” Protects Devices From Harm /
The Only Alkaline Batteries to Offer
this Superior Equipment Protection
Feature
02/01/2005 08:46 PMFuji Novel Batteries, one of the largest manufacturers of batteries
for portable electronics and digital cameras worldwide, is pleased to
offer a specially engineered “reverse current protection” feature in
its Fuji Novel D-Size and C-Size alkaline batteries. This feature
actually blocks the completion of negative-to-negative current in
batteries that are connected in series, thereby virtually eliminating
potential damage and premature discharge from reverse current in
incorrectly installed batteries. [PRWEB Jan 26, 2005]

03/29/2005 01:50 AMApologies -- I've been digging into the work of actually writing
some chapters of my book, and something had to give. Since the kids
still expect to be tended and entertained, the blog had to be left
neglected and bored. I could hear its whimpers from the corner, but I
had to harden my heart. (The kids scream louder, anyway.)
Conveniently, I no longer need to explain the deep psychological
reasons behind my choice not to blog a whole lot of the work of my
book, because Steven Johnson has said it all. Johnson has a new book coming
out next month, Every
thing Bad is Good For You, a defense of pop culture that I am
looking forward to reading as a reward to myself once I finally finish
the half-dozen books on software disasters I am working my way
through.

A long time ago I had the idea that perhaps a little utility
that stuck a menuitem in the menubar from which you could pop down the
picture of your choice might be a handy thing to have. The other night
I finally got around to building it. After spending far too much time
on this, I present to you: Pictu: The Picture Menu.

A week is a long time in politics
A week is a long time in politics
03/20/2003 08:31 AM The evening of March 18 saw the the Labour Government, assisted by
the Conservative Party, defeat a rebel motion which opposed
impending military action in Iraq by 396 votes to 217. John Reid,
Labour Party Chairman immediately appeared on BBC2's Newsnight
saying, A singular message has been sent from [Parliament] to
the Iraqi reigime, who thought that we were incapable of action
because we were a degenerate and enfeebled liberal democracy.
This may seem like a victory for Blair's Labour Government and their
policy of supporting the US. But the size of this rebellion, and a
previous vote also on Iraq, are unprecedented in recent British
history and follow a week of open and candid criticism from members
of Tony Blair's own Cabinet and a series of resignations. This
article aims to assess the scale and character of the rebellion, and
speculates on its impact on British foreign policy, which has
recently had such a disproportionate effect on debate at the UN and
elsewhere.

Brad Oliver, long time Mac developer, rants about the sorry states of Mac installers and third-party Mac tools. I
have to agree on the Mac installers front. If all you're doing is
making a Cocoa app to distribute via a dmg file, you're fine. If you
need to install kernel extensions, etc, you're going to have a
miserable time of it.

More Googleable unsecured webcams
01/05/2005 03:58 PMXeni Jardin:
Following up on
yesterday's post about how to sniff out publicly-viewable webcams
(whose operators may not be fully aware that said webcams are publicly
viewable), Boing Boing reader
George Hotelling says:
Did you know there's a whole site dedicated to finding interesting
stuff via Google? Link, and check out or the "ihack
stuff.com" site.
And reader
Victor Gregorio
says:
Here is a search that finds Axis webcams..
inurl:"view/index.shtml"
Link.
Reader
Jonathan offers yet another
string for Axis cams,
Link, and says "They're particularly fun since they tend
to have multiple frames per second, so you get something almost full
motion." I just tried this and found a cool barnyard in Japan where
goats and baby cows were frolicking in the dirt with ducks.

its image. After years of getting clobbered by the regional Bell

company has turned its business focus from traditional phone service
