Haunted electricity
Haunted electricity
02/16/2004 10:35 AMWhile I was away at Emerging Tech, the electric company installed a
special meter on our incoming line to see if the voltage is clean and
sober. The guy left it there for three days. When he picked it up, he
told us that he'd have to do it again because the machine broke.
Coincidence? I think not....Bwahahahaha. Meanwhile, I have now thrown
out my bookshelf-style stereo system because it lost all bass and the
remote stopped working; the tuner can only be tuned through the
remote. (Yes, I did put in new batteries. And I did get a Mac.)...

04/04/2005 10:20 AMBW. Super efficient plug-in hybrid cars.
The Set
America Free coalition, a group of conservatives and enviros, is
pushing for $2 billion in incentives, pointing out that "if all cars
on the road are hybrids and half are plug-in hybrid vehicles, U.S. oil
imports would drop by 8 million barrels per day." Of course, this
begs the question: where do you get all of that electricity? Our
existing electrical system is in serious disrepair. Investment
in the infrastructure has been falling for decades.
Of course, the market for energy is seriously distorted. The
costs of hydrocarbon security aren't being factored into the pump
price.

College Kids Draining Dorm Electricity
Grids
11/17/2003 04:17 AMCollege kids are showing up at school with an increasing number of
gadgets and electronics - and they all need power. Universities are
discovering that they need to
upgrade their electrical systems
to provide more power and more outlets per room - and even then
they're finding it's sometimes not enough. One study found that an
average freshman arrived with 18 electrical gadgets. One director of
residences claims that dorm rooms these days look like mini
electronics stores. Of course, I don't think this sort of thing is
limited to dorm rooms. I'm sure plenty of home users are discovering
that they're draining more electricity and using up more outlets than
ever before.

Nifty
showerhead has built-in electricity generator.
Water enters the shower head through the flow resrictor
(1) then travels through the injector plate (2) which directs the
water to the waterwheel (3). The water spins the magnetic waterwheel
past the stator (4) of the field wincing (5). This hydroelectric
generator develops the 2.5 volts at .31 amps which lights the PR-6
bulb.
The result? "The Showerstar will be sure to light up your evenings as
the perfect addition to any romantic setting." I doubt it. The kind of
person who would buy one of these would probably prefer taking a
voltmeter into the shower than a partner.

Electric Universe : The Shocking True
Story of Electricity by David Bodanis
Electric Universe : The Shocking True
Story of Electricity by David Bodanis
04/12/2005 05:37 AMThis biography of electricity -- and of the men and women who had a
hand in uncovering its inner workings -- begins in the first moments
after the Big Bang. Which is probably not where your high school
textbook started its exploration of the subject, nor will you find
many of the oftentimes surprising stories Bodanis uses to illustrate
his tale.
The first mobile phone was dev
eloped in 1879? Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb, "had a
vacuum where his conscience ought to be"? Alexander Graham Bell, in
part, invented the telephone to impress a girl (well, acutally the
girl's parents)? Samuel Morse stole the telegraph from a guy named
Joseph Henry and patented it, but not before he ran for mayor of New
York City on an anti-black, anti-Jew, and, most especially,
anti-Catholic platform? None of that was in my high school science
textbook and such is the authority of the textbook that I have a hard
time believing some of it. You're thinking maybe Bodanis is
embellishing for the sake of making a more exciting story (history +
electricity? wake me when it's over!), but then you get to the 50
pages of notes and further reading on the subject and realize he's
shooting straight and science is more strange, exciting, and sometime
seedy than your teachers let on.

12/02/2003 02:39 PM If you can offer the world a strip like Calvin and

there's even a brief encounter with a man who may or may not have once
made millions happy by drawing a six-year-old boy and his stuffed
tiger.

Use A $2 Bill At Best Buy; Get Arrested
04/07/2005 03:22 PMThere's an old net.legend that's been passed around plenty of times
about a Taco Bell employee
refusing to
take a $2 bill, because he thought it wasn't real. It's not
entirely surprising, given the rarity of the $2 bill in common
usage. However, it appears Best Buy has taken that Taco Bell story to
an entirely different level where they decided to
have a customer arrested for using
$2 bills. Apparently, no one at the store or in the local police
force recognized that $2 bills are perfectly legal currency.

Don't Just Spy On Employees, Bill Them
As Well
02/01/2005 09:43 PMWhile many studies have shown that spying on employees tends to make
them less motivated and
less
productive, that still hasn't stopped any number of companies from
coming out with tools to help show just how much you distrust your
employees. The latest, however, goes a bit further than the usual
reports of just what various employees have been doing while surfing
the internet. This one tracks exactly how much time
and
bandwidth an employee uses on various websites so that
an employer can bill the employee for that time. Do
you think the companies that install this will also bill the employees
for the amount of water they drink out of the water fountain? Maybe
the wear and tear in the parking lot from driving their car into it
each day as well would make sense. It's not clear why this needs to
be repeated so often -- but such micromanaging of employees doesn't
tend to do much good. If an employee isn't getting their job done,
that's an issue that should be taken care of. However, monitoring
what they're doing every minute of the day -- and then even stooping
so low as to charge them for the time, is a plan that's only going to
backfire. Hopefully, the first employee presented with such a bill
will turn around and present a bill to the employer for any phone
calls or emails handled at home as well as the time, gas and
depreciation expenses of driving to work each day.
Reagan should be on a $3 bill
Reagan should be on a $3 bill
06/11/2004 07:06 PM
Reagan
should be on a $3 bill "For the funeral of Ronald Reagan,
they took the body from Beverly Hills to Simi Valley, the white Los
Angeles suburb, where it stayed for a day and a half or so then they
drove it in one of these two hearses to the airport and flew it to
Washington and then they had a march and afterwards put the casket
into the Capitol for crowds to pass by and now there was to be another
march and a religous service and then a drive to the airport, where
the casket will be shuttled back to the airport south of Los Angeles
and in a hearse to the final ceremony at his library on Friday. That
is quite a funeral. They buried George Washingon in half the time.
You keep thinking of Harry Truman, whose code was, "Do not
impose." He left an order that there were to be no eulogies at
his funeral."

Bill Joy Still Worried
11/19/2003 02:16 PMWired Magazine's latest interview is with everyone's favorite worrier,
Bill Joy, talking about
why
he's both optimistic and pessimistic about the future. He
remains, as you might expect, quite opinionated, believing that there
are plenty of near term opportunities for technology as computers get
more powerful. However, he's still worrying about how we're all going
to blow ourselves up if we don't come up with some sort of Hippocratic
Oath for technologists.
