My Greatest Milestone

My Greatest Milestone

My Greatest Milestone 06/17/2005 03:38 PM

I've been very fortunate thus far in my career, getting to work on really interesting projects with very smart people, getting to meet some of my heroes, having the satisfaction of seeing my work acknowledged by users or my peers. But perhaps no recognition that I've received is quite so...

Greatest game ever. 01/27/2004 12:40 PM
Greatest online game ever. (flash, and turn the sound up). I know it's not friday, but I'm hungover and cold so it feels like friday. And this game doth so rule.

greatest german 12/02/2003 01:15 AM
Three million Germans have voted post-war Chancellor Konrad Adenauer as the greatest German of all time. Reformation Monk Martin Luther came second, with communist philosopher Karl Marx third. Composer Johann Sebastian Bach and writer Johannes Wolfgang von Goethe were also in the running. Adolf Hitler and other Nazis were excluded from the poll.

Now and again, when I have time, I like to write little funny stories. I don’t actually have time to write one right now, but I figured I’d point to a few of them, in case you’re relatively new to my weblog and may have missed them.

Here’s one, probably the most popular, on doing bong hits with Bill Gates.

My personal favorite is on how it’s so hard to teach squirrels to play baseball.

Here’s my BBEdit song.

Here’s one on the inherent evil of that Three Dog Night song Joy to the World.

Then there’s my list of top ten really mean put-downs.

Though it’s not terrifically funny, I like it as a rant: how I don’t want wearable computers.

Here’s a post on how I like to say inappropriate things. I compare a part of my anatomy to a roll of duct tape.

Another personal favorite is Frank, a fable.

A milestone

A milestone 06/14/2004 08:37 AM

A picture named marlboroLights.gifTwo years ago today I stopped smoking. Today I occasionally want a cigarette, but much less than I did a year ago, and that's much much less than two years ago.

On that day: "It's going to be a light day here on Scripting News. Lots of non-Internet stuff going on." Indeed. Shortly after writing that, I stopped at a Woodside gas station and got two packs of Marlboro Lights. Rolled down the window and lit one. Drove to the cardiologist's office. I was having severe chest pain. Weakness. Difficulty breathing. A feeling of doom.

When I got to the office they wanted to put me on a treadmill, but I refused, I felt too frail. They did an EKG. Nothing wrong. Then an ultrasound. Also normal. The doctor sat me down and said there's probably nothing wrong with my heart, but let's do an angiogram just to be sure.

We walked over to Sequoia Hospital, luckily it was downhill. I undressed, signed papers. They explained that if they found a blockage they could fix they'd put in a stent . I said I hoped that's was what it was. They wheeled me into surgery, put me half-under. I was sort of conscious through the operation, but have almost no memory of it. I woke up in a private room, with no idea what had happened.

A couple of hours later the cardiologist came in. I was still in a daze. He was yelling. I got the impression I was very sick. Didn't know what was happening. Later somehow I learned that I had four blocked arteries feeding my heart and that they'd do bypass surgery on Monday. I cried and cried. And learned a lot. Maybe I'll write some more about it.

The greatest "opportunity cost" of all

The greatest "opportunity cost" of all 09/16/2004 05:11 PM
Last week, Salon documented the "opportunity costs" of the administration's decision to invade Iraq -- what the country could have done instead with all the resources we've committed to the war so far. Depressingly, the list of under-funded projects includes many vital domestic security programs that would seem to be far more effective in contributing to the safety of the United States than the toppling of Saddam Hussein -- for instance, bolstering the security of sea ports, airports, and fully funding police and fire departments.

The 100 greatest British albums 06/20/2004 12:44 PM
The 100 greatest British albums ... and look what came first. Why? I personally don't believe the justification given. And surely the word Rock is missing from the title of the poll because I don't see many other genres mentioned. To be honest, I'm with Miranda Sawyer on this one -- why aren't more girls aloud?

Sesame Street's greatest moments

Sesame Street's greatest moments 04/07/2005 09:52 AM
Cory Doctorow: 25 Of My Favorite Sesame Street Memories is a lovely, lavishly illustrated essay that's pretty much what is says on the label: wistful funny essays about 25 great moments in Sesame Street history.
Guy Smiley has a huge & rather odd resume. Among the shows he's hosted are one in which a baby has to pick out its grandmother among an old lady and a mustachioed man & dog with wigs on, one in which all the correct answers are "Triangle," & the "Here Is Your Life" series of reunion specials. Anyone & anything, from an oak tree to Forgetful Jones had their own "Here Is Your Life" special, but my favorite was the one for Sneaker, an old, worn out, red Chuck Taylor lost in the back of a closet until the day Guy Smiley decided he deserved a tribute. Sneaker was visited by his designer, his shoemaker, his owner (represented by her bare feet & legs rolled up like she's expecting a flood in her closet), & his left counterpart (who was bought by a sculptor & bronzed as part of an abstract statue).

In the end, Sneaker found himself lonely after reliving his memories, & wasn't looking forward to an eternity at the back of the closet. That's when Oscar shows up & offers to add Righty to his rotten sneaker collection... but not before he receives a complimentary memory book & official Guy Smiley ankle bracelet!

Sneaker makes the list mostly because gutting the soles of my old Chucks & gluing two halves of a ping pong ball onto the tongue is on my eternal to-do list.
