Neal Stephenson: Why Star Wars doesn't suck

Neal Stephenson: Why Star Wars doesn't
suck

Neal Stephenson: Why Star Wars doesn't
suck
06/17/2005 03:34 PM

Cory Doctorow: Neal Stephenson's NYTimes op-ed talks about how the Star Wars cycle -- in particular, the execrable first trilogy (Teresa Nielsen Hayden suggests getting the DVD, watching it in Italian and pretending it's opera, but that only works if you don't speak Italian, otherwise, you'll still have to suffer through the "dialog") -- is better than it seems, when taken as a whole with all the geeky supplementary material in the games, comics, TV shows, toons, and other sources.

The Internet, it seems, has made it possible to extract all the non-pablum elements from Hollywood blockbusters and stick them online, so that the movies are friendly to civilians, but geeks can enjoy them by logging in.

If you have watched these cartoons - or if you've enjoyed some of the half-dozen "Clone Wars" novels, flipped through the graphic novels, read the short stories or played the video game - you will know that the battle cruiser in question is owned by the New Droid Army of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, which is backed by the Trade Federation, a commercial guild that is peeved about taxation of trade routes.

And that is not the only aspect of "Episode III" that you will see in a different light. If you watch the movie without doing the prep work, General Grievous - who is supposed to be one of the most formidable bad guys in the entire "Star Wars" cycle - will seem like something that just fell out of a Happy Meal.

Likewise, many have been underwhelmed by the performance of Hayden Christensen, who plays Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Only if you've seen the "Clone Wars" cartoons will you understand that Anakin is a seriously damaged veteran, a poster child for post-traumatic stress disorder. But since none of that background is actually supplied by the Episode III script, Mr. Christensen has been given an impossible acting task. He's trying to swim in air.

Star Wars, A New Hope

Star Wars, A New Hope 04/01/2005 05:20 PM

I didn't realize how much the recent two Star Wars movies had sullied my once-fond memories of the first three films until I sat down to watch the original Star Wars. The acting is marginal at best and the story is a little clunky in places, but that's really beside the point, isn't it? The special effects have been digitally retouched and remastered on the DVD, but even without all that, I can see why SW was such a huge deal when it appeared in theatres in the late 70s. Space opera indeed. And the last scene with the X-Wing fighters and the Death Star -- don't worry, I won't give the ending away if you haven't seen it -- I've seen that scene about 30 times and it never fails to entertain; I know every line by heart almost and I was still on the edge of my seat.

Star Wars Toys: Then and Now

Star Wars Toys: Then and Now 06/17/2005 03:44 PM

Battle of the 'Star Wars' trinkets: A great little article comparing Star Wars toys then and now. I remember the Yoda hand puppet from 25 years ago:

The Yoda hand puppet could look up in awe, or down in sadness, or stare straight ahead blankly. Side to side? Not so much. And the lips didn't move either (so much for ventriloquism.)

Today, the "Call Upon Yoda" is much more talkative:

He's got 500 phrases, but be careful: this Yoda will ruin the new movie for you if you haven't seen it already. He tells the tale of each Star Wars movie from beginning to end and doesn't give warnings for spoilers.

Star Wars weekend

Star Wars weekend 06/22/2005 02:21 AM

I convinced Andi that Alex(8) and Linus(7) are old enough for the Star Wars films. So, this past weekend we watched episides I, II and III. We started with Episode 1.1: The Phantom Edit, a fan-edited version of the film that includes much less Jar Jar than before. They boys thought they could have cut more; I kid you not. I thought the Phantom Edit was a little too fuzzy to enjoy. I guess that's because it was created from a VHS copy of the film.

I think the boys enjoyed Episode II: Attack of the Clones more than Episode I, but there was a little too much kissing. It's funny to see the kids cringe when Anakin and Padme get all mushy.

It was Andi's birthday on Sunday, so she took Alex and Linus to Episode III and I stayed home with the little Leo. They enjoyed it the most of the three, but Linus was a little disturbed when he saw what happened to Anakin. I don't think he was really traumatized, at least not as bad as he was on Th e Mummy (whatever you do, do NOT mention The Mummy to Linus).

I wonder what they're going to think of the original films. Will they see IV and V as the awesome classics that I know them to be, or dated and dull after the orgy of special effects they've just gone through in the prequels.

New Star Wars trailer

New Star Wars trailer 03/14/2005 04:23 PM

Once every three years, the first trailer for yet another crappy George Lucas Star Wars movie is released somewhere to great fanfare. And each time, I watch said trailer and get all excited. It looks great, I'll say. Maybe it'll actually be good. My hopes start to rise. And then the movie comes out, Natalie Portman is transformed by Lucas' awful direction into the worst actress ever, and I leave the theatre disappointed that a cherished childhood institution has been handled in such a piss-poor manner. With the impending release of Episode III and the trailer during last night's episode of The OC, I have vowed not to get my hopes up. Never again, George Lucas, will you disappoint me.

However.

OMFG THE TRAILER FOR THE NEW STAR WARS MOVIE IS SOOO GREAT AND EXCITING AND THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO KICK SO MUCH ASS!!!

A torrent of the trailer is available here (smaller version here) and in QuickTime.

First the Kelly Clarkson thing and now this...I don't know what's going on here. I promise there's an interesting scientific explanation for all this. I'll write about it soon, honest.
