Apple's music market dominance

Apple's music market dominance 11/06/2003 09:59 AM
Commenting on the success of the iPod and the iTunes Music Store, Steve Jobs last night said that Apple has become the "Microsoft of music stores," once again shocking the Apple faithful. A Macworld UK article notes that SoundScan, a company which assesses digital downloads, has declared the iTunes Music Store the market leader with 80 percent of legal music downloads last week. This huge market share coupled with Apple's market-leading iPod music device makes Apple the...

SAN FRANCISCO -- It was 20 years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play ... they've been going in and out of style, but they're guaranteed to raise a smile ... With thanks and credit to Sir Paul McCartney and the late John Lennon, that memorable lyric seemed appropriate Tuesday at the opening of the 20th annual MacWorld Conference and Expo here at the Moscone Center. Music and smiles were the order of the day among the estimated 10,000 attendees.

Music player market heats up

Music player market heats up 03/19/2005 03:27 AM
Digital music players have exploded into the mainstream market with Apple leading the pack, offering some of the most pricey players available. After introducing the iPod in 2001, Apple has become the digital music market leader, currently holding 80% of the market in the United States. Pew Internet & American Life Project in February found that about a quarter of people with household incomes of $75,000 or more owned digital music players but only 6 percent owned the devices among those earning less than $30,000. "iPods and MP3 players are becoming a mainstream technology for consumers" Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project said. "More growth in the market is inevitable as new devices become available, as new players enter the market, and as new social uses for iPods/MP3 players become popular." Apple introduced the iPod shuffle in January at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. The introduction of the shuffle was a change from Apple's regular iPod price tag, with the device selling for less than $100. This price breakthrough for Apple allows those have been seeking a lower price point to purchase one of the sought-after iPods while still maintaining a bank account balance. A recent surge of iPod clones have been tossed into the market, confusing iPod desirers with their similar names and looks. A Taiwan-based maker of digital audio products, Luxpro, introduced its Super shuffle digital music player at the CeBIT conference in Germany last week. Luxpro's Super shuffle is nearly identical to Apple's iPod shuffle measuring in at nearly the same size but, unlike Apple's iPod shuffle, it offers a voice recorder and FM tuner. The company even had iPod silhouette-style advertising to promote the device around the show. Another Asian company, Orient Expert Technology Co., Ltd., introduced an iPod-copied device called IPOD Mini. Like Apple's iPod mini, the Orient Expert IPOD has a 4 GB hard drive but offers an optional FM tuner. With the market finding more competition, even if it is among direct clones of the iPod, prices in the market are dropping with the introduction of competitive devices offering additional features, at a lower price. With this in mind, Apple may have to consider offering additional features and lower prices to stay at the head of the game.

eBay to Enter Digital Music Market? 07/15/2004 10:09 PM

EBay flirts with digital music downloads: It was probably inevitable.

Online auction giant eBay Inc. will allow some customers to buy and sell digital music files as part of a pilot program that could piggyback on the success of Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes service.

San Jose, Calif.-based eBay said an unspecified number of "preapproved" users could conduct digital music transactions in eBay's new "Digital Downloads" category for the next 180 days. Executives will then determine whether to formally enter the market.
