My cable modem died. 12/12/2003 12:44 PM

My cable modem died last night before I was finished (it still is down -- I'm now dialing in via MSN). But, Forgetfoo went off and designed me a whole new look! See why CSS is cool? He can come up with a new design very easily. Anyway, I will keep working on the design this weekend. Who knows? I might just use Forgetfoo's design.

What's Making Cable Rates Jump So High?

What's Making Cable Rates Jump So High? 12/08/2003 04:40 AM
Just what we need to see - a bunch of companies trying to charge each other more money, leading to consumers getting bigger bills all the time. There have been plenty of stories pointing out that cable TV rates seem to be going up noticeably on a yearly basis. Usually, the cable companies blame it on the cable channels charging them more to carry them - and the worst culprits appear to be the sports channels who know they can get away with charging higher and higher rates, because some fans simply can't do without their ESPN. Of course, at some point, the whole mess simply becomes too expensive for too many people, and they start to look for alternatives. You would hope that competition would help drive the prices down, but since each of the various sports is basically a monopoly, they charge high rates for the programming, and the fans want access to that programming. The end result, though, could be that the casual fan gets driven out of the market - which is something all of the major sports will eventually regret.

Richard C. Jaworski announces that the US Patent Office has granted his “Petition to Make Special” on his System of Testing the Upstream Cable Modem Channel (TUCMC) patent application. The petition to the US Patent Office alleged infringement of his technology by Acterna Corporation in their DSAM 2500 Cable Modem Test Instrument. Mr. Jaworski has written evidence that Acterna knew of the patent and the technology prior to releasing the feature in the DSAM 2500. According to patent law, triple damages are applicable for prior knowledge infringement as soon as the patent issues. Due to its special status, Jaworski expects the patent to issue in the immediate future. [PRWEB Sep 27, 2004]

Qwest Offers Wi-Fi in DSL Modem

Qwest Offers Wi-Fi in DSL Modem 04/09/2004 03:57 PM
Qwest is selling DSL customers a $60 (or rented for $3/month) gateway with Wi-Fi built-in: Actiontec is a big winner here, with Qwest selling their DSL/Wi-Fi combo. This may be the first U.S. telecom or cable firm to offer Wi-Fi so aggressively as an integrated product, but it won't be the last. It will soon be de rigeur to offer Wi-Fi as an option or a baseline feature in gateways and broadband modems. The products are available; the ISPs just need to hop on the right bandwagon. The price is notable, because past offerings of Wi-Fi equipment to telco customers has been far above market prices. This price tag of $60 seems perfectly reasonable given its integration. It's not clear from the article whether technical support for Wi-Fi is included in the DSL subscription....

Weird sticker on my DSL modem

Weird sticker on my DSL modem 07/12/2004 07:15 PM
I just got my Yahoo! DSL self-install kit in the mail, and the modem has a red sticker on it that reads:
"ATTENTION To maximize connection speed, leave this modem on for 10 days after DSL installation is complete. Please Note: You can use your DSL service during this time. It is not necessary to leave your computer on, only the modem."
Why do I have to leave the modem on for 10 days? Is something inside it fermenting? Email me if you know.
