nVidia Forceware 77.13 Beta Drivers for
Windows 2000/XP
06/06/2005 12:13 AM

Thanks forster, who found a link to the new official nVidia beta release Forceware 77.13 drivers

This from Guru3D: This driver has been serving from NVIDIA's press site for over a week now. Since this site is under an NDA pending NVIDIA's upcoming new graphics card release we had to be a little reluctant to post it. However the damage was done, so we'll follow the other driver sites now.

This is ForceWare 77.13 for Windows 2000 and XP. It was build on May 13th, 2005 making this an extremely new driver. The drivers comes with a setup.exe for easy installation. All GeForce Series based GPU's seem to be supported. We gave a little magic love to these drivers and re-chrunched them towards a far better 15 MB file-size.

First comments on these drivers seem to be that they are really good.

Atheros Files for IPO

Atheros Files for IPO 12/02/2003 12:32 AM
Chipmaker Atheros files paperwork to have a public stock offering: News.com's Richard Shim reports that Atheros filed papers Nov. 26 to raise about $100 million in an initial public offering. The company had nearly $50 million in revenue in the first nine months of 2003 compared to $16.5 million in the same period last year, while that period's losses this year were about $12 million versus $16 million last year. Before Comdex, competitor Broadcom launched a broadside against Atheros's chipsets with the Super G Turbo mode turned on for 108 Mbps speeds. While Broadcom says the complaint isn't directly connected to Atheros, but rather with out-of-standards hardware in general, Atheros is in the target because of it was well-known the company was ready to launch its IPO....

Shot Across Atheros (and Others) Bow

Shot Across Atheros (and Others) Bow 07/19/2004 01:19 PM
This press release sounds obscure, but it's not: you can't call yourself Wi-Fi if your proprietary add-on interferes with Wi-Fi receivers: The Wi-Fi Alliance has taken action on the alleged interference caused by Atheros Super G Turbo mode. Broadcom has stated on many occasions and presented test results that they claim demonstrate that the Turbo mode (which binds two radio channels to produce a gross throughput of 108 Mbps an a net throughput in the mid-30 Mbps) can dramatically drop the speed of nearby Wi-Fi networks running 802.11b or 802.11g flavors. Atheros has consistently denied that those tests reflect reality: they have said their own tests fail to demonstrate this problem. Testing by Tim Higgins of Tom's Networking showed most clearly that Broadcom's equipment was most heavily affected by Atheros's Turbo mode, but only under limited, close-range circumstances. Anecdotally, I've heard more and more stories from home users finding their networks performing erratically, but I have been unable to track down in those cases whether new nearby networks--in apartment buildings or residential neighborhoods--were the culprit, whether Atheros-based or otherwise. The Wi-Fi Alliance had promised months ago to take up this issue, which is a touchy one, given that Atheros and Broadcom are both members, and that most chipmakers and consumer manufacturers are deploying a range of proprietary and/or pre-standards extensions to Wi-Fi. Starting today, if any extension impairs other Wi-Fi devices, the alliance can use its trademark control to pull its branding. The alliance's director, Frank Hanzlik, says in this press release, "If a product extension significantly impacts the ability of other Wi-Fi CERTIFIED equipment to operate as intended, the Alliance may withhold or revoke certification." Interestingly, more devices are heading to market without the Wi-Fi stamp, and with this latest tool, it might mean that Wi-Fi becomes Balkanized--Atheros could opt out and potentially see no problems with that decision. Some of its OEM partners already ship Wi-Fi-trademark-free equipment....

Atheros on WAPI, 802.11n

Atheros on WAPI, 802.11n 02/01/2005 09:12 PM
Atheros talks about WAPI, 802.11N, and standards: Atheros recently announced that they would be the Wi-Fi chip supplier for Lenovo, the Chinese firm that plans to take over IBM's personal computer division. While that takeover may be temporarily held up due to politicking, it's still likely to go through, and gives Atheros a foothold in a new market. But this relationship reminded me of the WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure) debate last year in which China was about to require this proprietary and closed security standard in all domestically sold Wi-Fi adapters and equipment. After high-level intervention by the U.S. government, China backed off from the requirement. My objections to WAPI stemmed from its closed nature: many in the encryption world believe that closed crypto is made to be broken because it cannot be tested in a robust fashion. It's also extremely easy to provide back doors, which can be used for government monitoring as well as being themselves weak points of entry. The U.S. government wanted explicit backdoors in encryption in the 1990s; there's no reason China wouldn't want that right now. I had the chance to speak to Atheros's Sheung Li, their product line manager, about both the WAPI standard and the progress in Task Group N (802.11n), the high throughput standard underway at IEEE as a successor to 802.11g. The interview appears after the jump....

Belkin Uses Atheros Tech for A+G

Belkin Uses Atheros Tech for A+G 01/05/2005 07:32 PM
Belkin has many dance partners these days: Tom's Networking reports that Belkin has chosen Atheros for its A+G products, which may be heating up in the marketplace these days. Belkin uses Broadcom for 802.11g and Airgo for its "pre-N" MIMO devices....
