NY AG Buys Google Ads On Keywords Of
Company He's Investigating
04/06/2005 06:28 PMWhile most US courts have determined that there's
no
trademark infringement in buying a search engine advertisement
based on a trademarked keyword, there are still
some
cases going forward. So, it's a bit surprising (though, amusing)
to find out that New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer was caught
buying trademarked
keywords promoting his campaign for governor. The keywords in
question were for AIG, the big insurance conglomerate that Spitzer has
been investigating for fraud. From a publicity standpoint, perhaps it
makes sense. People searching on AIG may associate Spitzer's name
with the company, but this is a bit trickier than someone just
trying
to get some publicity off of a popular keyword. Spitzer now
claims it was a mistake, and the ads have been removed. Of course,
what's to stop someone else from buying the same ads, and linking them
to Spitzer's campaign site? In fact, at the time of this posting, it
looks like some random advertiser
has picked up on this story
and is
advertising some random anti-Google site, claiming that
Eliot Spitzer and Google "overstep their boundaries." Once again,
people seem to be trying to make a point through popular keywords.

Spamalot Fans Opened Up To Lots Of Spam
03/14/2005 05:27 PMFans of the Broadway musical Spamalot (based on an old Monty Python
movie) might have been surprised to find out that by signing up on the
musical's website to be on the show's email list, they also
open
ed themselves up to receiving some spam. Of course, that's just
the catchy hook to make the story interesting. The real story is that
Spamalot and some other Broadway shows set up their mailing list
software in a way that revealed the names, postal addresses and email
addresses of everyone on the list. However, there's no evidence that
any spammers actually got a hold of the list, or that anyone was
spamming with it -- meaning that the only reason this is worthy of
getting attention is because of the amusing connection with the name
of the musical. Unfortunately, the reality is that this is just yet
another story of an organization having weak security in place to
protect the info of customers.

Japanese school uniform
maker Ogo-Sangyo Company has released their newest advancement in
uniform technology: GPS-enabled blazers. The GPS terminals, located
inside the uniforms, can communicate back to parents (or potential
kidnappers, naturally) the location of their children, allowing them
to know exactly how many stops at the okashiya they made on
their way home. The terminals are built by Secom, whose GPS devices
showed up in similarly-intended GPS
satchels.

Army Unveils New Uniforms
Army Unveils New Uniforms
06/15/2004 05:25 AM
The Army unveiled their new uniform, with a new
camouflage sporting a green, tan, and gray mixture (based on a similar
Marine Corps design) that is meant to work in all environments, from
the concrete jungle to the forest jungle to the, uhm, sand jungle.
Replacing many of the buttons with zippers and Velcro for easy access
(including lots of new pockets for gear and gizmos), the new uniforms
are looser and more able to integrate with the increasing amount of
body armor being worn by soldiers in ongoing campaigns. This is the
first major update to the uniform since 1981, when the Army declared
all soldiers must wear pants in combat.

When I went
to Japan a couple of weeks ago, I kind of became obsessed with the
uniforms everybody wears there. My friend Todd let me know about a
series of Japanese uniform books that J-List sells, like this "Office
Lady Uniform Pictorial Book Part 1":
For fans of the sailor uniform books, here's a "Chinkame"
format photobook (pocket-sized) photobook of the beautiful uniforms of
Japan's OLs (office ladies) -- those dedicated to serving tea and
working on copy machines across the country. A super full-color
publication documenting the cutest blazers, skirts, outfits and
different uniform styles as introduced to you by the hottest current
race queens. Famous uniforms of famous companies (NTT Docomo, Seibu
Bus Company, BMW, etc) from across the country, with information on
the style of the uniform as well as the girl modeling it. This is
volume 1 a perfect bound, soft cover book that will look great on your
coffee table
