Mixing and matching on one's public page

Mixing and matching on one's public page

Mixing and matching on one's public page 06/06/2005 12:13 AM

Though the stylesheet is still rather conservative, and the range of external modules still limited; take a look at my public page on Tribe.net (below.) Imagine this was your "About Me" page.

Notice that we're meshing in de.licio.us and RSS feeds, giving our end-users the ability to put up more than one 'desktop image' up into their interface and combining internal and external blogs.

We're also displaying different combinations of friends and groups - and in general - fulfilling the 'customization' requirement of DLAs.

This is what we all need - every DLA, portal, social network and blogging tool around. The ultimate "About Me" page. Now that Tribe has set the new standard, all other systems will be compared to this.

Tribecomposite.jpg

I especially like this approach as it allows one to add in additional modules - without fundamentally changing the UI.

Sure it looks allot like MyYahoo, and it could use three columns, and sure we'd like sexier stylesheets and Tribe still needs a better header - but that all will come with time. It's the ease of use and power quotient that I'm excited about right now.

It's taken years - but the Tribe team: Paul Martino, Brian Lawler, Chris Vale, Elliot Loh (among otehrs) - and the product marketing dudes - Chris Law and Gary Chao - have finally figured it out.

It's called product iteration - and it's what we did with VideoWorlks - for five years till we got Director - just right.

One's God Or One God?

One's God Or One God? 12/02/2003 07:35 AM
One Nation Under God(s): George W.Bush u nwittingly restarted an old theological debate. Is the God that the Jews, Christians< /a> and Muslims worship the same God? Or to be more accurate; notwithstanding the different forms of worship and beliefs, is it the same God in different guises? Fundamentalists in all three monotheistic faiths tend to disagree. For other believers - to ruthlessly simplify - God is necessarily one. Either way it's still a fascinating question (possibly not only for religious folk) and has important consequences in an increasingly divided and antagonistic world. What's it be? One God or one's God?

I've spent an inordinate amount of time over the years acting as librarian for my mail archive, manually sorting and sifting, carefully categorizing, and lovingly tending my history in email. After spending a little time with ZOE and thinking about the single archive methodology in Gmail (don't sort, search), I'm starting an experiment today where any mail to be kept for any reason I'll be dropping into a single Archive folder and relying on full-text and To/From/Subject-based searching rather than sifting through project-, person-, or mailinglist-specific folders. I'll check back in and let you know how I get on.

Pride In One's Country

Pride In One's Country 11/11/2003 10:33 AM
Are You, Deep Down, Secretly, Between-You-And-Me, Proud Of Your Country? Even if you're not Canadian? Because a lot of people in the world, no matter how badly run their country might be, seem to be just that. Isn't it weird, though - and, well, stupid - to be proud of something that just happened to happen to us and that we've done nothing to deserve, whether for good or for bad? A more telling question that occurs is: what nationality would you choose to be, if you couldn't be the one you are? Here's the menu.

How To Create Your Own Fad - Mixing
Bluetooth And Sex

How To Create Your Own Fad - Mixing
Bluetooth And Sex
04/19/2004 12:26 PM
Last month we saw the first article about the practice of "toothing" - using a Bluetooth-enabled phone to randomly, anonymously proposition people for sex on trains in the UK - and pointed out that it really sounded like a made-up fad by a few guys who really really wished it were true. They may be getting their wish. Following that first article, now Reuters has picked up on it and written their own article about the practice, which is sure to get plenty of press attention. This article, like the previous one, makes no effort to establish how widespread the practice really is (and how much of it is just in the minds of a bunch of horny commuters). Still, with this press coverage, it may become a self-fulfilling prophecy. So, all you need to do to create an overhyped fad is take some sort of communications technology, and figure out how to use it for sex. Then, you can anonymously tell the press about it, and they'll basically believe everything you say until the made-up fad sounds legitimate. Now, if they really wanted to get publicity, they should find a religious group that wants to ban Bluetooth because of this.

Matching newlines in JavaScript 09/20/2004 04:59 PM

Just a quick note: the . character in a JavaScript regular expression will never match a newline character. If you want to match any character including newlines you can use the [\s\S] character class instead, which means "any character that's either whitespace or not whitespace".

This differs from both Python and Perl, where regular expression flags can be used to alter the behaviour of the . character (re.DOTALL and /s respectively).

This tip courtesy of the denizens of #javascript on Freenode.

Amazon should run reverse affiliate links. When you search for or look ar a book on Amazon, they should have a little box that says "If you like this book, you might like these blogs..."

Better yet, let people upload their OPML file to their Amazon profile. Then they could have a box that said, "People who bought this book are most likely to be subscribed to these RSS feeds..."

Got this idea while perusing the Share Your OPML app over at scripting.com.

Prefix WhoIs 1.0.2 (Default branch) 04/12/2005 03:24 AM
Screenshot The Prefix WhoIs Project provides a whois-compatible client and server framework for disclosing various up-to-date routing information via a familiar whois interface. Instead of using registrar-originated information (which is often unspecific or inaccurate), it uses the Internet's global routing table as gleaned from a number of routing peers around the network. The software consists of a 'pWhoIsd' server that responds to queries using a variety of output formats including pWhoIs-native, Cymru, and RPSL, the 'pWhoIs-updatedb' agent that parses routing information bases (RIBs) from Internet routers and populates a relational database, and the 'WhoB' command-line whois client.
Changes:
This release fixes some database insertion routines in pwhois-updatedb. It significantly improves the routeview commands and some administration features. The documentation was also updated.

MySpace????

MySpace???? 04/24/2004 03:25 AM

MySpace: The Show. Social networking is definitely going mainstream. I see in Variety that a reality show is being developed based on people meeting through social networking service MySpace. [Note: the article led me to sign up for MySpace, and I will review... [Get Real]

I'd be interested in what Stowe thinks about MySpace.  I call it the "kitchen sink" of social networking.  I'm amazed at just how many features and capabilities it has.  For what it seems to lack in heart, soul and passion - it makes up with Rankings, Blogs and Games.  They even have classifieds!  And Yahoo ads all over the place!

But there's something about that place - which (BTW) they claim they have more traffic than Friendster right now.

MySpace - is #1

MySpace - is #1 03/06/2004 01:49 AM

According to a PR Newswire this morning Nielsen NetRatings confirms “Myspace.com‘s market leadership in Social Networking category”:

LOS ANGELES, March 1 /PRNewswire/ — MySpace.com, formally launched just over one month ago, today announces it is the number one ranked social networking site in terms of page views, according to Nielsen NetRatings, the leading online measurement tool.
“The latest Nielsen statistics validate what our users have been telling us for months,” said Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and President of MySpace.com. “By allowing our users to dictate the features they want, we’ve been able to develop an offering that keeps them coming back.”
MySpace.com has garnered an ardent and loyal fan base very quickly thanks to the technological superiority of its offering. MySpace.com is the only site of its kind to integrate blogs, instant messaging, classified listings, voting, groups, user forums, music and other user-created content. MySpace.com has also taken an active role in sponsoring music shows, parties and other events for its online users to socialize offline.
“To become the leader in the social networking space in just five months is an accomplishment we’re thrilled about, but we see it as only the beginning,” commented Tom Anderson, co-founder of MySpace.com. In addition to its technological advantages, MySpace.com allows a level of flexibility that is unmatched in the online social networking world. Users are allowed to create personalized web page profiles, which they can then use to link up and communicate with others of similar hobbies and interests. As the site is entirely advertiser-supported, use of the site is free.

[The Social Software Weblog]

This exposes what we've all known all along - that nobody goes to Friendster anymore.  And that it's lack of funtionality and features - makes it a joke.

Now I'm not sure if its MySpace's features, or people themselves - but they sure look like they're having fun over there.

The Office on MySpace Even though the leaked pilot met poor reviews on Metafilter, it's interesting that NBC turned to massive social networking group MySpace to launch the American version of The Office. MySpace will stream the whole first episode of The Office on March 16th at 8PM while the episode will air for the first time on NBC March 24th. Maybe BitTorrent has really gotten to them.

Just got this in my mail - and it's 2AM - so I guess Judith must be asleep - or else she would have blogged it already.

MySpace now has improved their Groups - and added it to their lineup of better blogging, classifieds, very coolio music features and special 'band groups'.

MySpace has proven that it really is about the activities and giving people something to do. IM, Ranking and Games seem to be the core activities.

Business model? Ads. Sposnorships. Special Band Groups. Watch for even mroe ''premium' features that folks will pay for. How many of them - you ask? Over 2M.

Man oh man - I just can't wait for the Reality TV show.

Just gotta convince Tom to support the FOAFnet.

MySpace continues to kick ass

MySpace continues to kick ass 06/30/2004 02:40 AM

Networking website offers marketing opportunities for musicians.

The networking website trend, while not exactly new anymore, is still thriving. While Friendster.com was the first to reel users into the world of organized online socializing, MySpace.com has since caught up. Many formal Friendster loyalists have since moved over to MySpace for its added features such as instant messaging, blogs, and classifieds. (That~s not to say that Friendster doesn~t still have its own dedicated fan base.) One of the site~s most recently added features, MySpace Music, is utilizing the networking space to spread the word about music artists.

Consumers tell us that they mostly find out about new music through their friends, which is exactly what MySpace Music allows users to do online. While musicians can also create profiles on Friendster for friends-of-friends to see, MySpace Music takes the concept a step further by offering band Web pages and music downloads, thus turning the site into a potential marketing tool. Similar to how Napster users can view other users~ music libraries, MySpace users can view each others ~friends~, thus providing MySpace Music artists with considerable exposure and access to their fans. With the buzz on MySpace Music, we expect to see more networking sites offering similar marketing opportunities in the future.
