Retro Nintendo Watches

Retro Nintendo Watches 06/06/2005 12:09 AM

Nintendowatch_250-2.jpgSome of my favorite childhood memories involved these big jars of tamales that my dad would buy and that I'd make and eat in bulk coupled with a few minutes of LCD gaming goodness on my old Pac Man watch. As a result, I was a pretty fat kid. Well, I can relive those artery clogging days with these retro watches feature 'tenda favorites like Donkey Kong, Zelda, and G.I. Joe (?). As a rule, these things last about five days before something cracks and then you're out of luck, but it's nice to recapture those low-fi days of yore in these trying times.

Plus, we like anything that shows a little pale belly skin.

Who WATCHES movies?

Who WATCHES movies? 09/09/2004 07:19 AM
Cory Doctorow: The sterling satirists of Loading Ready Run have produced a sharp, funny and amazingly true short film in response to the "Who makes movies?" anti-piracy spots that we're subjected to before we see our $10-13 flicks.

This spot, called "Who watches movies?" and features a graphic designer talking about how grossly offensive it is to pay a stack of money, sit through interminable advertisements, then be lectured at in a film made by some distant coked-up Hollyweird fatcat. 4.4MB MP4 Link (Thanks, Paul!)

Bespoke martian watches keep 24h, 39m
day

Bespoke martian watches keep 24h, 39m
day
01/09/2004 09:56 PM
Researchers working on the Mars lander are rising and sleeping on Martian Standard Time, the daylight hours on the lander's plot of Mars. The martian day is 24h, 39m long -- which means that the rover crew had to get custom-made timepieces (for "had to," here, read, "thought it would be really cool to") manufactured for them by a master watchmaker.

My next novel, Eastern Standard Tribe, (due out in just a few weeks!) revolves around the way that your sleep schedule determines a lot about your social circle and hence your beliefs, alliegances, and so forth. A friend of mine in DC who used to work for the CIA just read the book and wrote to point out that the military has been running timezone-tribes for years, so that all the people commanding and supporting some distant operational unit are rising and sleeping on a schedule synched with daylight hours in some far corner.

But I bet they don't get cool watches like this one -- someone should manufacture and sell 'em. My sleep-schedule is so scr0d that I would happily wear this thing and abide by what it told me about my circadian. Link (via MeFi)

Evergreen MP3 Watches For Couples

Evergreen MP3 Watches For Couples 04/15/2005 09:58 AM

evergreen_watch.gif imageEvergreen's new "EG-MPW256CII" offers absolutely nothing over previous MP3 watches, except for perhaps style. Whether or not you determine the style of the watch to be appealing is unrelated. Evergreen offers blue and pink versions of the watch "intended for couples." It will play audio from its 256MB of internal memory for about 10 hours. Let's hope Evergreen was smart enough to give it a second battery for keeping the time.

Pokia: Retro Handsets

Pokia: Retro Handsets 07/08/2004 12:29 PM

pokia.jpg
imageThe Times -- the Home & Garden section, of course, not Circuits -- has an article about those Pokia handsets, the retrofitted old-style phones that occasionally show up for sale on eBay. More art pieces than products, the idea behind Pokia, says creator Nicolas Roope, is to challenge the mobile industry to free themselves from the sci-fi styling rut and start taking more aesthetic chances with the form factors of our phones. It's a cute hack -- although I doubt there's a burgeoning trend in it -- and I have to say I agree with the general sentiment. Who wouldn't like to see a phone made out of wood, or copper, or meat?

Roope has even created a special edition Pokia to take advantage of the publicity commemorate The Times' profile.

Retro Audio: EMS Synthi A and AKS

Retro Audio: EMS Synthi A and AKS 09/24/2004 09:55 AM

synthiaks.jpg imageIn 1971 EMS (Electronic Music Studios) released two versions of this portable three-oscillator synthesizer, the Synthi A and the AKS (pictured). Both were miniaturized repackagings of EMS's earlier VCS3 unit, but the AKS took things a step further with its included monophonic digital sequencer and 30-note touch pad keyboard. The bit that looks like a Battleship grid in the middle is actually used to route signal to various parts of the unit by sticking pins in the appropriate holes.

Alan Reiter on MSN watches: they will

Alan Reiter on MSN watches: they will
suck
01/23/2004 02:20 PM
Do those MSN SPOT watches stand a chance? Mobile data pundit Alan Reiter says (this) (and this), summarized by BB reader John Troyer:
- They're big and ugly
- They need to be recharged daily
- They crash and sometimes die when shocked with static electricity
- They have to be turned off on planes
- Coverage is spotty compared to pagers and mobile phones
- News blurbs are 25-word useless snippets
- You have to tell MSN when and where you are traveling for it to work away from your home area!
- Nobody's *ever* made money selling generic headlines, weather and sports via wireless.
Reiter also says:
"However, syncing with MS Outlook is useful, and Reiter does believe they could catch on if Microsoft repositions to emphasize the fun aspects: downloadable watch faces, games, etc. ... [The watches] look as if they were designed by the Borg, on a very bad day. Many years ago Motorola introduced its first pager watch, I was there. I was pretty excited about the product. But when I spoke with a Motorola executive, he said the company wasn't sure whether the target market would view the device as a smallest, sexiest pager or as the world's ugliest watch. Unfortunately for Motorola, the view was the latter. Pager watches have generally died quick or lingering deaths. But the operative word is "death."

Boardbug Baby Monitor Watches

Boardbug Baby Monitor Watches 08/11/2004 09:58 AM

boardbug.jpg imageThe Boardbug is a watch-like baby monitor that has two distinct modes. In the first "baby" mode, the devices work like a traditional baby monitor, broadcasting audio from the child's unit to the parent's and even sounding a warning buzzer if the baby outsmarts the latch and takes the unit off. Plus it has a built in thermometer to monitor temperature levels in the baby's room.

The "toddler" mode takes all those features and adds on a proximity-based "safety range" and a panic button, which sounds a startling klaxon so you can easily determine which freeway your child is playing in, but sadly does nothing for the periodic anxiety attacks that come from realizing you've got 16 more years of this shit.

Microsoft MSN wireless watches released

Microsoft MSN wireless watches released 01/23/2004 12:11 AM
BoingBoing pal Mike Outmesguine (/OUT-mess-geen/) says:
These are neat rechargeable watches that feed you weather, headlines, etc. just like your alphanumeric pager did back in 1993. Ironically, I saw the ad on Weather.com. Coverage is sparse. It took me a couple tries on the zip to find the coverage near Los Angeles (hint: 91301 bad, 90066 good.) I have no idea what it's like elsewhere. (I hate zipcode lookup applets that don't give you proximity.) Microsoft MSN site showing all the watches: link. Fossil site for the Dick Tracy watch: link. From the website:

"MSNR Direct is a specialized wireless service that delivers personalized information through enabled watches. Smart Watches with MSN Direct provide you timely, glanceable information conveniently available at the flick of the wrist. Receive accurate time and stay connected to the information that matters most to you including news, weather, sports, stocks, personal messages, appointment reminders, and more. Find everything from a stock quote to the latest sports scores of your favorite team all with a simple glance!"

Sparse details on actual services provided (no games, mp3s or ringtones, apparently), Services include news, weather, stock quotes, appointment reminders, and personal messages. I don't know if I'll give up my Tokyo Flash watch just yet. Maybe I can go retro 80's multi-watch.
