Power Sentry PowerSquid

Power Sentry PowerSquid 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

powersquid.jpgWe have a standing 'All Ceph' policy, so the PowerSquid gets a mention, even if it's not the most useful thing in the sea. The idea is to allow easy plug access that power strips don't provide, while still offering a minimum amount of protection against surges (there's a 15-Amp circuit breaker inside). Manufacturer Power Sentry will selling them through a variety of retailers for around $15.

Travel Sentry: Save Money on Locks By
Letting Strangers Open Them
06/24/2004 11:13 AM

ts_generic_lock.jpg imageA new organization of luggage manufacturers called "Travel Sentry" has developed a set of combination locks that can be opened by not only their owner, but by agents of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Currently, TSA agents use bolt-cutters to remove any lock when searching through bags without the owner around, but by using a special code on the back of the lock or on a plate on the bag, agents can open the lock without having to destroy it. While the system may not be totally secure -- I'm sure at some point someone will figure out how to crack the key system -- locks on airline luggage are just simple deterrents anyway. If using a Travel Sentry lock will stop the TSA agents from snapping your padlock off every time they do a random check, so much the better. Travel Sentry will even replace a compliant lock if broken by the TSA.

Mac - Power + x86?

Mac - Power + x86? 06/05/2005 11:19 PM

CNET has set the Internet abuzz by reporting that Apple is going to jump from Power to x86 silicon. I think it’s believable, porting the software doesn’t seem like that big a deal. Here’s a personal sidelight: Last year I was chatting with a very senior IBM person that I’d just met, who smirked at my PowerBook and said “You know, we make more money on every one of those than Apple does.” Remember, he was real senior and we’d just met. Those kinds of stories are for sure going to get back to Apple and they’re going to be real irritating. Look at it this way: once Apple makes the first big step away from Power, if they don’t like Intel’s attitude or Intel’s performance or Intel’s pricing, they can walk across the street to AMD. Or for that matter back to IBM, who might have become a little more humble and hungry. [Update: Several people have written to point out that the IBM person was probably wrong, since the G4 in the PowerBooks is made by Motorola/Freescale, not IBM. But I think the point about attitude stands.]

How much power does your PC need?

How much power does your PC need? 09/08/2004 05:15 AM

Thanks to Lockergnome for the link. I am going to relate a story to you that will have some of you smiling and some of you saying hey revoke his geek status. I have worked in the electronics field for 20 years and work within prescribed power constraints all the time. Thus you would have thought that when it came to my own PC's that I would have figured it out sooner than I did when I started to have some weird problems.

I went to work and was talking to my trusted co-worker Steve who is 20 years my senior and knows his computers. I told Steve of the performance issues I was having with one of my systems. We went over it in detail and then he asked me a crucial question. How many hard-drives you have in that machine? I replied innocently 6 plus a CDR and DVD Writer. He then asked what size power supply I had in it? I then knew in a instant where he was headed. So as I went home that night with my tail between my legs I got to wondering how bad it was.

Pulling out my calculator and visiting a dozen or so websites to pull stats on power consumption I gulped pretty hard when the numbers came up 450 watts. I broke open the box and you guessed it their to my dismay was in bold print 250 watts rated power.

The next day I dropped in to a local computer store and purchased the biggest power supply they had on the shelf 550 watts and brought it home and swapped the 250 out. Sure enough as soon as I fired up the machine I could tell the hard-drives where spinning up faster etc. Performance problem went away instantly.

Lesson here is those of you power users that have a scrawny 250 watt power supply in your chassis you better head over to the referenced site and see if you too are running a little lean on total watts. [Power Supply Wattage Calculator]

Wind Power

Wind Power 01/04/2004 12:04 PM

New farm seen as model for future of wind energy: Here's a positive story on wind power and a new wind farm in California.

The 90 turbines at High Winds can generate 162 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 75,000 homes, according to Florida-based FPL Energy, which owns and operates High Winds along with 30 other wind facilities in 10 states.

Seventy-five thousand homes from 90 turbines? So one turbine could power...833 homes. I know a lot of small towns around South Dakota that could benefit from just one turbine. Think about it — one turbine per small town. Energy problems solved.

I've always wanted to have a windmill powering my house. I'm not an Earth muffin or a tree-hugger or anything, but I just think it'd be cool to be self-sufficient like that. Throw in a fresh-water well and a satellite dish with broadband, and you'd be set.

The $3,000 Power Cord

The $3,000 Power Cord 07/30/2004 06:47 PM

plug_epc.jpg imageYou may have too much money if you would pay $3,000 for a single power cable, or alternatively, you may not be giving enough money to us. If you bought a 1.5m cable, you'd get each centimeter for a around $20. Teac Esoteric, a Japanese company, manufactures the cable -- so costly that the provider of the 99.999999% pure copper wiring describes the manufacture of stress-free 8N class copper as (wait for it) "extremely difficult," forcing them to produce only 250 cables. Ever.

But this is no simple power cable. Polyolefin resin. 24 karat gold and palladium plating. Insert costly material you haven't heard of here. I hope that for this much, this is the finest in power delivery, and by "power" I mean "handjob."
