How To Write Technology Reviews: Our
Insider's Tips
06/06/2005 12:08 AM

mmartinez.jpgMediaBistro's upcoming 'How to Write Technology Reviews' seminar sounds like a lot of work to us. Save yourself the $65 fee and learn the real secrets from Gizmodo's team of professional fake trade journalists. Instructor Michael J. Martinez offers to teach you the following, while we give you the goods for free:

• How to get your hands on cutting-edge gear

Insider's Tip: Call PR firm president at home, claiming you are from a big organization, like CNET or Engadget.

• What do to when putting a review item through its paces

Insider's Tip: Show review item to friends, rating their envy on a scale from one to ten. Do this the night before your deadline.

• How to evaluate documentation and accessories

Insider's Tip: Did documentation overflow your trash can? If so, it is 'comprehensive, but a bit technical'; if not, documentation is 'scant but colorful.' Do not remove accessories from product box as they would unfairly influence your ability to get them back into the box.

• Tricks to make your review a compelling read

Insider's Tip: Start with a fond anecdote from your childhood, contrasted with an insulting or adulatory mention of the iPod. See: T; See Also: A.

• How to build coverage of a new product into a trend story

Insider's Tip: If $item = "iPod" goto "2003" else $item = "iPod Killer?"; sub kids_gadget {echo "Are your kids [having sex|doing drugs|in danger of kidnapping?]}

• How to involve real people in a review story

Insider's Tip: Invent likely-sounding names with likely-sounding color quotes, unless pitching to MIT Technology Review or Wired News. In those cases, make the color quotes from celebrities, whose quotes the media are legally not obligated to fact-check, especially if they are hilarious.

• Where to pitch your reviews and trend pieces

Insider's Tip: Libraries; Gamestop; Wendy's. Anywhere technology editors forage in the wild.

Sure fire bet: grow a beard, approach editors at conventions with your ink jet-printed business card; wear giant camera over utility vest, use crumbs from finger food to draw attention to your commemorative technology conference badge from 1996.

Also, if trend story is two months stale, there's always the The Times.

To write: perchance to try again: ay,
there's the rub or Do I Write Another
Book?
01/15/2003 08:47 AM
To write: perchance to try again: ay, there's the rub1 or Do I Write Another (PHP2) Book? Anyone who was IMing me in the May / June / July time frame may be surprised to see this entry. Things change and time makes pain and bad memories drift away. I am speaking, of course, about the O'Reilly Essential Blogging writing process which was just plain awful and made me swear that I would N_E_V_E_R write another book for money. And here I am. I've been approached by Sams to write a PHP 5 in 21 Days book and I'm torn. I just don't know whether I want to walk this road again. Here's the situation as I see it: Pros I am the PHP Journal columnist for "On the Horizon" which talks about new PHP 4.x and 5.x features so it makes sense to write this I'm virtually certain that I'd enjoy working with this editor more than my last. Shelley strikes me as just plain cool (she handled giving out books to a pack of ravenous open source folk at PHP CON with a lot of style and grace). Good self promotion Would probably generate consulting work although that is by no means clear Establishes my credentials more firmly and anchors me to PHP even more Chance to talk about things like templating and event driven coding $$$ (although there is never all that much of it) Having an editor Cons Having an editor Have to create a __good__ website for the book How will they bungle the online side of it in a new and creative way? Lose the source code? Post it wrong? Managing the book writing and blogging and consulting process concurrently Will I actually make money Does promoting parts of it on my blog make me a schill Questions If anyone out there can help with these questions, I'd appreciate it: Anyone out there buy Sams books? I haven't in years and I don't know the rep these books have. Thoughts? Example of Similar Sams Book Has anyone written for Sams? Do they pay well What are they like as a publisher? Positive, Negative, Details? Was it a good or bad omen when I dropped my review copy of "Cold Fusion in 21 days" in the sink when shaving this morning? Would you buy it? Do people buy PHP books as opposed to using PHP.Net? I myself have a bunch of PHP books but don't turn to them all that often. There is something just plain addictive about walking into a bookstore and seeing yourself on the shelf. That and once you've written one book then there is just something about it. As Robert Heinlein once remarked (and the quote is inexact) "No one likes writing but people like having written". He was definitely correct about that. Thoughts, feedback, comments strongly appreciated. 1To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub; Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1. [_Go_] (sorry for the bad link but their search engine doesn't give easily linkable results) 2Oh and if you're wondering why I put PHP on the title, with PHP being the target audience I figured it would get this more attention (and syndication to other sites) from the target audience

How Not To Write An OS X Installer 12/22/2003 08:52 PM
One of the most powerful features of OS X's Unix underpinnings is the ability of a single computer to host multiple users. Unfortunately, this strong point of OS X is rendered into an annoyance by many software developers who are either too lazy to write a proper installer or ignorant of how to do so. Write the President Here

Write the President Here 05/11/2004 10:30 AM

Hi, this is President Bush. No seriously — the entry was written by George W. Bush. I'm posting to this blog because it seems like Deane's site is a great way for people to get in touch with the movers and shakers of the world.

Apparently a great number of you are sitting out there waiting for important people to post here so you can get in touch with us. Given this situation, I'm sitting here with Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, Jesus, and Scooby Doo right now. We're waiting for your comments.

So, please write to ask for money, to explain your theory on the war in Iraq, to chastize Willie for his indescretions, to ask for random miracles, or to say that "I would have gotten away with it too, if not for those meddling kids!!"

We're sitting here waiting.

Yesterday somebody pointed me towards a little essay published 2 years ago by Mark Bernstein, 10 Tips on Writing the Living Web. What a gem! I can't believe I haven't seen this before. As soon as I read it, I knew that if I searched for the title, it would be cited thousands of times. It has all the hallmarks of a classic, the first draft of Strunk & White for writing on the web. It's a great essay about writing on the web, but also just about writing. I won't cheat by excerpting large portions, I'll just demonstrate that Bernstein knows how to write a headline: Write for a reason Write often Write tight Make good friends Find good enemies Let the story unfold Stand up, speak out Be sexy Use your archives Relax! Highly recommended for anyone who wants to write for the web, or just wants to learn how to write better. Next time someone asks me, how do I start a blog, I think I'll send them this link. After reading the essay, I became even more impatient for Bernstein to finish the version of Tinderbox for Windows that he is working on, so I have a chance to try it out....
